“Great Place for a Special Treat!”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

I stayed here with a friend just for one night on 20 July 2013 to escape the overpowering heat of Basel. The train journey to Gstaad is very picturesque, and I'd certainly recommend rail as the best way to arrive. Especially attractive is the stretch from Zweisimmen to Gstaad, where you can take a panoramic train or a 'Classic' - a repro of an old train faithful to the last detail.

The acceuil at the Bellevue couldn't have been better. We were met on the doorstep by the new owner Daniel who was sorry we'd not informed him of what train we were coming on, or he'd have arranged to have us met at the station (it's only 300 yards away!). We were given a short tour of the hotel and its excellent facilities - including the spa with huge indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi , bubble rack and so on. Quite an installation!

Our room was a Deluxe Double on the 4th floor, with a balcony overlooking the hotel grounds and a fine view of the mountains in the distance. The room was excellently appointed, the bed very comfortable, and there was a vast and well-equipped bathroom with waterfall-style shower and separate bath. There was a free mini-bar and wi-fi. The latter was a bit difficult to access though – you had to log on and get a password sent to your mobile phone; and then you could only have one device connected up at a time. Much easier if they just gave you the password on a bit of paper, like most other hotels do! The only other small niggle about the room was the rather old B&O TV which gave a very bad picture and had no connections for laptops etc. You could watch a DVD from the hotel’s library though!

So all very comfortable. The staff were also excellent – very helpful and friendly. The hotel had just reopened after a change of ownership and a re-fit just 3 weeks before, so one sensed everyone was on best behaviour! But that’s no bad thing, as long as they keep it up. But I also felt Daniel the owner was very committed to the success of the hotel and the comfort of his guests – he was certainly very much in evidence front of house (good for him!).

We made as much use of the spa installation as time allowed – oddly, it was almost deserted so we had it to ourselves most of the time. There are no less than six saunas varying from a proper Hammam through to a Finnish Sauna, Bio Sauna and even an Ice Sauna where you went to cool off in a cold room and rub ice all over your body – quite an experience! One or two of the saunas weren’t quite warm enough (or at least not operating at the advertised temperature), but we reported this to Daniel and he went off to fix it! The indoor swimming pool is also wonderful, with a super Jacuzzi and a rack you can lie on in the water while bubbles are streamed through! We didn’t try the very extensive selection of massages and beauty therapy on offer – all very enticing, but just rather too expensive at £150 plus an hour!

We had an excellent breakfast on the hotel’s terrace – the usual extensive buffet, but also a choice of hot pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage etc from the à la carte (all included in the price too!). It seemed a shame only to spend one night there – it’s certainly worth a long weekend at least!

Value for money? We paid £385 (CFH 540) for just one night, to it’s not cheap, but in terms of the hotel’s excellent facilities, its location in one of the swankiest Swiss alpine resorts, and the price of things in Switzerland anyway, it’s not bad value at all if you want to give yourselves a special treat. I’ve stayed in more expensive hotels elsewhere in Switzerland which have nothing like what the Bellevue has to offer. And the fact that everything was included (most Swiss hotels charge extra for mini-bars, wi-fi, use of spa, breakfast etc) was certainly a very nice surprise.

A very fine experience overall, and one we’d certainly recommend. Treat yourself!

Room Tip: Go for a deluxe with a balcony - worth the extra!

Dear Mr. Walker,

I wished to thank you as the Owner (and Manager) of the hotel for your very kind words. It was a pleasure to have met hosted you here, and that you have taken the time to write makes us truly grateful.

Your trip was too short and we do look very much forwards to your returning soon, in the hope we may be able to further improve on our delivery!

For information, we are upgrading all the rooms in October/November, including a full revamp of our TV and entertainment systems to flat screens with in room tablets amongst many other special features. I believe we are already the first to be tablet and mobile on check-in in Switzerland!

We will continue to work hard and thank you again for your consideration.

With kind regards,

Daniel

Gstaad is a wonderful place to stay in the Swiss alps and the Grand hotel Bellevue is arguably the best hotel there. What sets the Bellevue apart from the other 5 star hotels is the new owner. Daniel and his staff have taken an already excellent hotel and made it relaxed and unpretentious (unlike that faux castle on the hill). On arrival we were warmly greeted by the staff and while we were waiting to check in, Daniel came over and introduced himself and asked if there was anything we needed. We have stayed in many deluxe hotels around the world and the first time we have ever had the owner come by and say hello. Our room was perfect - we booked a tower room, highly recommended. The room was spacious, full of light, with great views of the mountains. Our room rate included breakfast ( buffet and a la carte) and dinner - 3 courses and even the minibar. During dinner Daniel came by to explain the menu saying that if we didn't like anything on the fixed course menu, we could pick from the a la carte list or his chef could make anything we wanted. The dinner was excellent. At this point we were considering moving in. There is a pool, wonderful spa and even a movie theater which the children loved ( they have close to one hundred DVDs in English).
The Bellevue also can't be beat with respect to location. We were 3 minute walk to the center of town. The other deluxe hotels are all located out of town and at least a 20 minutes away on foot. The Bellevue is a wonderful place to stay and with Daniel and his staff, we felt like we were at home. If I could sum up our stay in one word, it would have to be - relaxing and a lot of fun....OK two words.

Dear 'AnEn',

It is quite remarkable when someone takes the time to write a review on us, and even more remarkable to receive when such kind words are written in recognition of a service delivery! Thank you for your words and thoughts.

I am trying to encourage a truly personal service in our special hotel. We have only 57 rooms and around 100 employees which does permit us to be very attentive, but this is certainly a daily goal of ours and not one we just assume to occur. I am delighted that you enjoyed yourself and that we were successful in delivery of a wonderful stay for you.

Having renovated only a couple of weeks prior to your stay, we do still have much to refine and improve and we shall continue to do so, but I am pleased you were able to enjoy our private Cinema, and 'casual' Michelin rated chef!

Looking forwards to your return, and wishing you wonderful onward journeys.

Kind regards,

Daniel

I had the 2 day tennis package. I thought it was excellent value for money. The hotel is right long side the tennis courts. The hotel was nicely furnished and decorated, having just had a renovation. The areas are big but still manage to be cozy. The bedroom I had was a very good size, with a balcony. Nicely and comfortably furnished. Bathroom also beautiful. Everything very clean. Breakfast, whatever you want, you can have and more, everything too tempting! The meal in the evening was lovely especially the desert trolley! The big bonus for me were the Staff. I am a lone, shy, woman travelling on her own, which can be daunting, but the Staff were very helpful without being in your face, and above all very friendly. They always made an effort for a friendly chat to put me at ease. Only improvement to be made at the hotel for me is air conditioning. Summers are hot in Switzerland. With air conditioning my rating would be 5* !

Dear Carolyn D,

I am so pleased you enjoyed the exciting tennis days with us! It is such a special moment to host the Swiss Open here in Gstaad, with stars such as Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka being so close to the spectators, and the spectators contributing such energy.

We were blessed with wonderful weather when you were here, and so I am glad you were able to take advantage of the stunning environment!

Wishing you all the best and looking forwards to your return!

Kind regards,

Daniel

Great find by a friend. The check in process is friendly and no long queues, rooms are clean and have beautiful views and the spa with six different types of sauna is worth the experience! Would recommend to a friend and as newly refurbished suggest to get here quick!

We stayed for a long weekend. The staff anticipates any need and never ceases to impress. The room was amazing, the views were wonderful, the spa is gorgeous. The food is delicious, we loved the outside terrace. The newly renovated public spaces are whimsical and comfortable. The staff always greets you by name and makes you feel that you belong. We cannot wait to return!

An amazing hotel, in an very beautiful city. All the staff was really friendly and helpfull and the room was huge, with a lot of space. There were only 2 drawbacks: first is that rooms don't have air conditioning, which is fair given it is a mountain hotel and most of time the time is freezing. But as I was there during hot summer days, it was an incovenient. Second is that my booking had dinner included every night, but it was on those tiny letters under booking conditions, and no one at the hotel ever told me that, even when I checked-in.

Dear Guilherme8686,

Thank you for your high rating, and of course for your feedback.

I am terribly sorry to hear that you were not aware of the half-board nature of your booking. I will ensure to let the team know to avoid this in the future. In winter this is obligatory, and in the summer it is optional; we are fortunate that many choose this option as this is served from our Michelin rated restaurant, but we will ensure that all guests are aware in the future.

As a 102 year old building, air-conditioning is certainly a challenge however due to the large walls and infrastructure, this does mean inconvenience only for a few days a year. As you say, we do have the cool mountain breeze at night, and as we are central to the valley this often drafts through the room. We do also try and reduce emissions accordingly, and so have thus far decided upon restraining from air-conditioning; we do however thoroughly understand your observation.

We hope nonetheless we shall have the pleasure of welcoming you back here in the near future.

In the meantime we wish you all the best,

Kind regards,

Daniel
