We were shocked at how we were treated by the older lady managing the hotel. We were 2 families with young children (stated in our reservation) but when we arrived and asked for sheets for the sofa beds the lady went crazy and was so angry at our request (should we just make the children sleep on the floor?). We then went for dinner (HB option) and asked for a small plate of food for the children, again the older woman came out of the kitchen and shouted at us for our request (should we let the children starve?) We didn't understand why this lady was so angry. If you run a hotel then it's not surprising that guests would ask for these type of things, perfectly normal and obvious when the booking clearly stated we had children with us.
The best thing about the hotel is the spectacular view from the balconies. The waitress in the restaurant was very nice, I think the older lady could learn from her how to treat paying customers! We have stayed here before and even recommended this hotel to family and friends but this will be our last visit because the lady was so rude. When we wanted to check out and leave for our days activities the lady continued to be extremely rude leaving us with a very disappointing experience. We will never go back to this hotel, there are plenty of other hotels with beautiful views.

The hotel has two stars, not very luxurious. It is located somewhat above Grindelwald village, away from the hassle of the main street. Therefore it is very quiet and the views on Grindelwald and surrounding mountains are absolutely superb.
The first night we took the set menu in their restaurant. This was very disappointing, not very well cooked, ingredients out of cans instead of fresh. Grindelwald has better restaurants!
Service was also not very good. The portuguese lady serving breakfast and dinner offered good service. But the lady at the front desk appearantly did not enjoy her job. Her service was minimal.

This hotel really worth a 5 stars grading. Great stunning eiger mountain view in the room, decent and nice HB meal offered from the restaurant. You have nothing to complaint about it, even though just a few steps uphill to the resort but it's really worth it! Honestly just takes a 5 minutes walk from the station. Will absolutely come back for my next visit. Missing Sonnenberg and all the staffs working there.

Room Tip: Rm 204, nice mountain view with a big balcony

This place is rated 2 stars… which is about 10 stars less than it really deserves. I’m sure the folks who hand out stars never visited. "Sonnenberg" is the coziest little hotel we ever stayed at. And the cleanest, too. The décor is typical Swiss chalet – inside and outside. The rooms are absolutely wonderful, perfect in size and very comfortable, with a balcony looking straight at the Eiger. Breathtaking. The owners that run the hotel go back several generations and I’m sure somewhere along the line in the family tree you can find the one person who wrote the book on what it takes to make guests feel welcome – the Swiss way. We’ll be back for sure… again and again. Even if the stars don’t change!

Room Tip: Top floor (2nd). Corner room (207).

This July marked my 5th trip to Grindelwald and the Sonnenberg Hotel. The hotel, situated close to the train station on the hill directly above the village is a steep walk – but the views will reward you. From each room and balcony you can see unobstructed views of the gentle alpine meadows, Mannlichen Ridge, and the magnificent Eiger. The rooms are quiet, tasteful, and comfortable. The WiFi was great! Relaxing on our balcony with a glass of wine after a long hike – just drinking in the views – refreshes your spirit. The breakfast buffet hosts fresh breads and rolls, a variety of musseli, cheese, meats, juice and best of all steamed milk for your pot of freshly brewed coffee.
This hotel is not for those who want 5-star catering. As a family run hotel, they operate a small staff (mostly the family). Once you understand how the hotel is operated, it is very easy to get any special need met. When I come again (and I will), the Sonnenberg Hotel will be my home.

Room Tip: Almost all rooms have a balcony and a spectacular view

The Sonnenberg is a lovely hotel in a great location. It is about a 500 metre (very steep) walk uphill from the train station. Our room was very well appointed and had a large balcony overlooking the town of Grindelwald and the Eiger mountain.

The breakfast room is lovely and had the same view as from our room. The breakfast was excellent and the staff were very nice. If we ever get back to Grindelwald (which might be some time as Switzerland is very expensive), we would certainly stay at the Sonnenberg again.

Room Tip: Try and get a south-facing room ovrlooking the Eiger.

No doubt it was a steep climb to the hotel, but the view was superb. Stayed there 3 nights and enjoyed every moment there. Annabel provided great service with a smile at breakfast and kept the room very clean.
