“Lunch in the clouds”
Reviewed 30 September 2013

Here for late lunch on hike from Schynige Platte to First. Alas, Faulhorn was in the clouds, so no view like others have posted on TA. Soup and hot chocolate on the porch were good--they were out of salad. Service was slow. We sat outside, a little chilly this day, but it was warm inside when I stepped in to get a picture. Per our observation, they seemed to provide better service to the parties who spoke German.

Still, this place is still worth a visit, clouds or no clouds. And the hike from Schynige Platte is fabulous! Many scenery changes along the way--do it !

FYI--You do need a 1 CHF coin to use the WC.

The hike up is rather hard with the kids but the views and the experience of sharing the bunks makes it an unforgettable experience for everyone. Kids liked the helicopter delivering the supplies and foodstuffs in the morning a lot.

We slept in one of the massenlager (mattress-room) common sleeping rooms, along with 36 other hikers of wildly varying ages, ...and with this come the obvious snoring, kids making noise, and lack of privacy,... but this is the authentic Swiss Mountain Hiking experience, and what should one expect in a 180 year old hotel on the top of a 2600m mountain peak. ...It was great!
The reviews below describe the mountain-hotel and all of its quirks. This is not a luxury destination... this is for hikers and mountain lovers who are willing to forego comfort for fantastic views, amazing sun-sets/rises, and the satisfaction of hiking up to this altitude.
The staff were very friendly and were really happy to practice their english with my (non-german speaking) visitor. The mattresses were comfortable (enough) and the provided woolen blankets kept us warm through the night. The food for dinner was simple but very acceptable, the breakfast was straightforward bread/cheese/jam/drink... but there was enough food to fuel up for the day of hiking - which is impressive when you know that it was all shipped up by helicopter.
We had a great trip to, at, and down from the Faulhorn, and if you are willing to forgo luxuries for authenticity of mountain hiking then this is a really great place to see -and stay at- the top of Switzerland.

Room Tip: There are only a few "private rooms"... if you book early enough you can get one of these...

Incredible view on top of a mountain in the Swiss Alps, there's nothing like it! Extremely pricey given that they don't have showers or much for the "free" breakfast, but it's definitely worth it. All the supplies are air lifted in by helicopter which explains the outrageous prices - 10 frank for a water bottle, for example. Just come prepared with extra food or fill up in the streams :) Helpful and friendly staff - we all felt very welcome.

Berghotel Faulhorn is on the very peak of Faulhorn - the view is just absolutely spectacular. The building is historic and cosy. There is no heating, but you get hot water bottles at reception;-) The staff is very helpful.

Room Tip: Try to get a room to the front.

My gf and I loved this hotel, the hike from First is amazing. It is quite dependent on weather, though. When we hiked up the mountain was completely engulfed in cloud so you couldnt see more than 15 feet or so, which I liked because I could pretend I was in some kind of horror movie like the mist lol, but it also meant we got very wet and cold along the way. All the better then that this hotel had an excellent restaurant with hot, hearty fair - the germans (well, Swiss-German) know how to fill a stomache let me tell you lol. The staff were also excellent, my back was hurting from carrying too much weight on the way up and the owner kindly gave me her own aspirin and muscle cream - where else would you get that service?

The next day the clouds, unfortunately, were still there. As such we didn't get to appreciate the view as much as we were hoping, but on the way back it started to clear and by the time we were half way to First had opened up nicely, giving way to gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains poking through clouds as they drifted up through the valley. Couldn't ask for a better view! (see my pics).

The only downside is that the hotel itself is not heated, or at least wasnt when we were there, and hence the rooms are the same temperature as the air outside, which for us was about 5 degrees celcius lol. Bring someone to cuddle with, or some good pajamas.

We stayed at this mountain inn while on a self-guided hiking tour of the Bernese Oberland arranged for us by Alpenwild. To get there we took a lift from Grindelwald to First, then hiked to Buchalpsee and then to Faulhorn. It was a great hike, though overcast, and at time raining heavily with thunderstorms. It snowed overnight (August 3!!!), but we continued on to Schynige Platte on yet another fabulous hiking trail. This is the oldest mountain inn in the Swiss Alps - we had a private double (two beds), and nearly every wall and ceiling was slightly crooked. The room was charmingly rustic, the dinner was great, and it was fun hanging out in the nice steamy dining room with all the other hikers while it rained outside. The staff was helpful and cheerful, speaking English quite well. This is one of the classic hikes in the Bernese Oberland and I highly recommend the hike especially if combined with staying at this Berghotel.
