“Stunning view and helpful staff”
Reviewed 15 October 2013 via mobile

Our stay in Grindelwald at the Hotel Alte Post was one of our highlights during our family vacation in Switzerland. Compared to other hotels in Switzerland the hotel is reasonably priced. We had two rooms next to each other on the second floor with stunning views of the mountain. On the balcony the children could walk over to our room. The owner is really helpful - our daughter fell and needed stitches and they immediately arranged for us to see their doctor. Absolutely stunning views especially early in the morning and at dusk. Close proximity to everything and free parking on site. If we visit Grindelwald again we will definitely stay at the Hotel Alte Post! We visited in September when breakfast was from 7am. Grindelwald is the most beautiful town stay here longer than you initially plan!!

Booked on the fly, a bit pricy, but then again gondola on the doorstep, central location in town on the main street with all shops, restaurants, and cafes just a few minutes walk away. Our room was very nice, good size, impressive balcony view over the mountains. Breakfast included, friendly staff, and free parking.

We had a room with a balcony overlooking the mountains. The room was comfortable, with tea and coffee making facilities which we hadn't had since leaving the UK. The staff at the hotel were friendly and very helpful. Knowledgeable about the area and more than happy to make suggestions about what to do. The only downside was the cost, but wherever we have stayed in Switzerland it has been expensive.

Room Tip: Get a balcony on floor -1 (sounds a bit weird, but most rooms are on minus floors.)

We arrived at Alte Post at 6pm after a long, hot hike from Murren. We were sticky and sweaty and probably a little smelly but that didn't stop Frau Gruber-Abegglen shaking our hands to welcome us warmly. Then her very friendly assistant helped us with our bags to our room and invited us to go down for a welcome drink when we were ready. Sitting outside with cool white wine and nibbles, freshly showered, it was difficult not to feel very positive about the hotel!

The standard double room (32) was spacious and had a little balcony with a table and two chairs looking towards the mountains and glacier. There was a bath as well as an over-bath shower. No fridge.

There was free wifi in the lobby but it didn't reach the room (although it did get to top of the first flight of stairs outside it).

Breakfast was excellent, mainly because as well as the usual selection of cereals, jams, cheeses and meats, there was the offer of eggs cooked however you wanted. Other hotels often had scrambled eggs but they were kept hot for a long time and solidified.

Dinner was in the Alte Post restaurant - a separate building - and was also of a high standard. The rosti was the best we had all holiday.

The hotel and restaurant both felt more traditionally Swiss than a lot of places we stayed. There were locals in the bar and a good atmosphere throughout. Frau Gruber-Abegglen was also a source of good advice about local walks. We would definitely stay here again (and Grindelwald is a good base for the Jungfrau area).

This property is situated in the approximate center of the village. It is directly adjacent (steps from the hotel bar to the ticket wintow) to the "First" mountain gondola, a very popular mouintain for hiking. The main village Bahnhof (train station) for heading to Kleine Scheidegg (Eiger, Jungfrau, Mountain peaks) is less than five minute walk from the hotel. This property is a 2013 version of a traditional Pension/Gasthaus with fantastics views of the mountains. There is a resturant Also named Alte Post) that fronts the main road and well worth a meal or two during your stay. (same ownership, separate building). The rooms are typical pension, with nice balonies and of course very clean, and practical design/amenities. The morning breakfast (included) at the Alte Post is well above any other pensions I've experienced. There is cozy bar on the registration level, with outdoor seating (5-6 tables) which allows you to take in all the spectacular views. Very modern security system and building access so you can return late without disturbing anyone or worry about gaining access. Don't know the rate structure in season (summer or ski season), but this hotel is a wonderful value in June. Bring your own shampoo, and conditioners; and preapre for radiator heating to be turned off in June. t-shirt and pajama bottoms and you should be fine if you are the type to get cold easily at night.

We first hesitated in choosing this hotel as there have been many reviews about the unfriendliness of the staff. Perhaps some people simply do not understand the Swiss ways. The staff, under the command of the wonderful Frau Grueber, were all super friendly, polite and HAPPY! The rooms are clean and comfortable. Breakfasts were wonderful. By Swiss standards the prices are correct. Location is first class. You simply have to buy some of their home made cheese when leaving. We were very sad to leave as we were made to feel special.
