“Great Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2014

I stayed at the Derby for a week in March with a very large group and we couldn't have enjoyed the experience any more! To begin with we were a group of over 50 that arrived sporadically throughout the day and to my knowledge everyone was checked in and given their rooms smoothly and with a smile. The staff throughout our trip were a highlight.

Our rooms were really nice and kept very clean throughout our stay. We lucked out and had Eiger views from our balcony and it was just an incredible sight to wake up too! One of our two rooms was a family size room and it was very nice having the extra sitting space.

We had dinner all evenings at the hotel and the food was plentiful and really delicious. Each night had a different theme, and FIVE courses. I've never been so well fed in my life. The fondue night was an extra special treat - I was caught eating the cheese with a spoon towards the end!

The proximity to the train is really ridiculous, made getting to the hill so convenient. The ski storage facilities were great and easy to access around the back of the hotel or with an internal elevator. The only downside I would say is that the facility doesn't have a large whirlpool which is always a nice treat after a long day on the hills.

Excellent vacation in general and a perfect stay at the Derby!

Dear guest! We remember very well your group and we can speak for the whole Derby team that it was our pleasure to have you here! Thank you very much for writing about your experience with us and in Grindelwald! Unfortunately we do not have the space somewhere on the property to fulfill your wish for a swimming pool :-). Nevertheless we always hand out the guest card of Grindelwald to all our guests which allows free entrance to the Sports centre (5 minutes walk from the Derby) where you find a public swimming pool and a Sauna. We hope you could at least use our little sauna on the first floor. Again we would like to thank you for your review and we are looking forward to welcoming you at an other occasion!

Location next to the train station means tonnes of noise early in the morning. Rooms themselves look like they were made in the fifties. Staff weren't unpleasant. Room did have a spectacular view however.

Dear guest! First of all we are very grateful for your review as it gives us the chance to adapt our services to the wishes of our guests. As our hotel is located directly at the train station in centre Grindelwald some guests might hear the trains as you did. Fortunately they do not run all night (last one at 10 p.m.). Concerning the rooms we would like to inform you that we are in the process of modernzation and are constantly refurbishing one room after the other. For example our junior suites as well as some of the standard and superior rooms have already been renewed and we continue the next closing season in autumn. Therefore we hope to welcome you again at the Derby in order to have the chance to convince you as well with our room standard. Thank you again for your comment!

Criticisms

1. The beds are worn out and need to be replaced. I suppose that technically that is an obvious overstatement, since I only tried the bed in my room, but I will go out on a limb. My bed was so worn out that it sagged in the middle so badly that if I merely sat on it, getting up was difficult, because when I pushed down, the bed went down instead of my body going up.

2. In my room, the bathroom door would not open fully. The architect who drew up the plans for the current design should surrender his license, but I suspect he is deceased. At any rate, the bathroom is to small to use with the door closed. But your access to the sink is restricted because the sink blocks the door. Really, just a minor annoyance, and one I wouldn't take special note of in true budget accommodations.

3. WiFi access was odd. First let me begin by giving the Derby credit for recognizing that internet access is an essential lodging service, the same as running water, lighting, and television service. I get aggravated by pretentious business class hotels who, trying to gouge another shekel out of their business clientele, impose a separate charge to use WiFi service. However, the service at Derby was peculiar. It kept disconnecting, intermittently. I would read an email, click on the next one, and get a message, "Your computer is not connected to the internet." I suppose knocking people off-line prevents the use of the service for downloading movies and the like. But it got to be annoying.

Positives

1. Very convenient location. It is at the train station. Get off your train, look in the direction your train was going, and turn to your right. It is right there. It is essentially on the far right platform. Don't let that be a deterrent. Grindelwald is at the end of the line and trains only run during the daytime.

2. As far as I could tell, every room has a little balcony. And the rooms have a glass door and large window facing that balcony giving you a terrific view of the mountain peaks surrounding the hotel.

3. The staff were uniformly genuinely friendly. A marked contrast from some of the pretentious haughty behavior of the staff in some of those business class accommodations I have alluded to.

This was our 2nd visit to this characterful & conveniently located hotel. Despite a change of ownership in April 2013 (now managed by the Baum-Zieglers), the hotel has retained its friendly atmosphere and attention to detail. The staff are attentive, pleasant and efficient.

We were fortunate to be upgraded to a renovated room which was spacious and had a lovely bathroom. We know that not all rooms are of this standard but understand that there will be a rolling programme of refurbishment with a focus on renewing the bathrooms.

The quality & presentation of the food is excellent. Our one criticism would be the lack of choice on the set menu - giving a couple of options for the main course at least would be welcome.

As skiers it was great being able to step on to the train outside the front door although it would be nice to use a lift to get from the basement ski & boot room to platform level with skis & boots.

Although the hotel doesn't have a pool, the guest card gives free access to the nearby local swimming pool including a great flume which our 11yr old son loved.

We would certainly consider a return visit to Hotel Derby.

Room Tip: South facing rooms have better view.

Having stayed at the Derby for many years, this year was slightly different in that the hotel had been sold by the family who had owned it for many, many years and a new management team was in situ. There was no need to worry, any changes had been implemented sympathetically, the staff were the same (a few new faces but that happens every year), the key personnel were still there. The menu had changed (we were full board), for the better we thought. the Derby enjoys a wonderful location, right on the railway station. No problems with noise from the trains as they are very quiet - and it's surprising how quickly you stop noticing them - until you're late for one!! I have a single room (same one every year) and found a new bathroom had been installed with a shower that was very difficult to get out of! The Derby has a ski room in the basement of the hotel which is only accessible with your room key and the boot room has nice heaters to warm your boots for a cosy start to the morning.

A few nice touches happen during your stay, the management invite guests to a drinks party one evening during the week and a bar of chocolate appears on another day. The staff are all very helpful and any requests are dealt with quickly and efficiently.

From a personal point of view this year I damaged my leg whilst skiing, the hotel supplied transport to the doctors for me, the porter organised the return of my ski's and helped me with my luggage etc. I couldn't have asked for more, they really were wonderful.

We will definitely be returning next year.

Room Tip: Choose from a room looking at the north face of the Eiger and lovely view up the mountain or a room...

We went to the hotel for a week over New Year, as a family holiday and also as a first skiing trip for myself and my two teenage daughters. We went half-board through Thompson.

The rooms are well appointed, as did not have a bath and looking at the layout of the hotel I am thinking that there were no baths at all as the rooms were quite small. Even though I love my bath at night, the showers were extremely impressive and the water pressure and temperature control meant that you could really have a very enjoyable shower. As mentioned, the bedrooms were little small, probably the same size as a travel lodge, but this wasn't really an issue. The double beds were actually twin beds put together making a super king size bed. Each bed had its own quilt which was real feather down and is extremely comfortable and warm, no problems about the bed or pillows which were also real feather.

I trusted other fellow reviewers in the fact that although the hotel is actually on the station platform, this was of no intrusion or disturbance as a guest and I can confirm this to be correct. You could occasionally hear trains pulling in and pulling out (quiet electric trains) and the occasional announcements over the speakers, this is very faint especially as all the windows were closed with it being winter. Trains were always running to time and so this makes getting connections very straightforward.

There is a ski and boot room which is on the second basement level. The ski room is locked and is accessible with your room key, the Boot room however is open but there are heaters mounted on the wall for all the boots. You're not allowed to use the lift with skis so you have to exit at the road level below the hotel and walk across the road for the bus or walkall round the hotel and up external steps to get onto the station platform. This wasn't a huge problem but crossing the road and footpath in snow/icy conditions can be a bit tricky in ski boots.

The staff were very attentive and you are never left waiting long to catch their attention to get extra drinks or service. They all speak excellent English and communication is never a problem.

As we went half-board, we had an evening meal every night. We cannot fault the evening meals at all, they were always a five course meal and of extremely high quality. Definitely a saving over going bed and breakfast and having to pay for a meal out every night.

Breakfasts were a Continental buffet consisting of juices, three or four different meats, plenty of breads, croissant, fruit and cheese, amongst other things.

When eating out for lunch, there are plenty of places to choose from. We can highly recommend C and M on the other side of the road at the other end of the town, uncle Tom's cabin, the pizzeria little further away than C and M (possibly the best pizza ever!), and an Italian which is on the same side as the hotel a little closer than C and M. This was also a wonderful pizza which was made in a woodfired oven. These places are all a stone's throw away from each other and located very close to the gondola lift to First, about 8-10 minutes walk away from the hotel.

Even though your typical Swiss house or bar may have piles of wood outside for a wood fire, you would really think there will be lots of fires in places such as this as there was so much wood available. We could not find a single place that actually had a wood fire. Speaking to the locals, much of this wood is for show!! However, all the places are well heated and temperature inside a bar or venue was really warm and of no cause for concern.

Overall then, Grindelwald is a beautiful little town, lots of nice little shops and a wonderful place for a holiday. Please be aware though, the prices are astronomical for such things as ski and outdoor clothing. What you might expect to pay about hundred pounds for a ski jacket over here, will cost you about £300 or more in Switzerland, and the top of the range ski jackets, for example, will set you back nearer £700. A shop such as TK Maxx or a clearance outlet would make a killing over there, but there's probably some restriction or cartel preventing this, as there were no budget shops whatsoever. However, if you are staying bed and breakfast, the co-op in the centre of the town is extremely well stocked and prices are fair. It's not your UK equivalent of a co-op, it is very much like a large delicatessen with all the staples you would find in a co-op.

Dear Richard L,
We thank you very much for having taken the time to write such a detailed review. We are delighted to see that you and your familily spent a good time in Grindelwald and also in our hotel. It is not self-evident at all that someone is putting so much effort in writing about his experience like you did and we are very grateful for the support you provide us with all this information. We agree that a lovely fire place would be a wonderfull feature especially for our hotelbar and it might be worth to consider for the next bigger renovation measures. As well we are pleased to see that you enjoyed our 5-course evening menues, as our kitchen team emphasizes a lot on diversification, high quality and just tasteful dishes. For your information, the hotel also provides superior rooms with bathtub which would also be a bit larger than the rooms you stayed in. We thank you again for your review and would be very glad to welcome you again at the Derby.

Great, central location in the middle of town. You have a choice of looking at the Eiger or looking over the railway station but due to the mountain location, if you have to have a railway-side room there really isn't much if any noise to wake you up or stop you from going to sleep.

Breakfast was average-to-good, but travelling with a 6 month-old who goes to sleep by 7pm, we were rather tied to eating at the hotel for dinner. There are two choices, a-la-carte ($$$$) or 5-course prix fixe ($$$). We went for the prix fixe, but aside from the dessert each evening, the food (especially the main course) was quite unimpressive and occasionally not all that edible either. The wifi in the restaurant is also quite poor, so if you find that your radio-based babyphone is out of range, don't expect to be able to rely on consistent performance from a wifi-based app.
