Hotel was very clean and modern. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Excellent breakfast that was included. So close to the train station that I first thought it was part of the station. Would definitely stay again.

The Derby Hotel sits on the edge of the downtown area of Grindelwald. The Grindelwald train station and terminus is literally right outside the front door of the Derby, while the backside of the hotel is flanked by the street; I thought for sure it would be noisy but it was not at all; the trains are eerily silent and the backside street traffic is unobtrusive even with the windows wide open (that is important because there is no A/C).
Pros – The staff speak English, are friendly and very helpful with offering suggestions on sights to see in the area. Rooms on the backside of the hotel (not the train side) offer staggeringly beautiful views of the Alps. We had a nice junior suite with a comfortable bed, large TV and couch, and very spacious bathroom at a reasonable price. Full size suites have balconies. The Derby has a full restaurant, breakfast is a good selection of scrambled eggs, bacon, cheeses, breads, cereal, coffee and tea. Coffee maker and electric teapot in the room. It’s a short walk into the main downtown area. There is free parking on site, always welcome when driving around Europe. If you are traveling on one of the EU Rail Passes or one of the Swiss passes, the trains stop at the front door.
Cons - Rooms on the front side of the hotel are nice but face the train station; backside rooms, especially higher floors, have magnificent views of the mountains.
Attractions – Drive 20 minutes to the Lauterbrunrn area and take the 4 trams up to the peak at Schilthorn. Get off the tram at Murren along the way to visit the quaint alpine village and do a bit of hiking. The views from Schilthorn of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks are spectacular, and at 9,700 you feel like you are at the top of the world surrounded by Alps. Have lunch or early dinner at the Piz Gloria rotating restaurant, but remember the last tram down leaves at 5:50pm!
I would definitely stay at the Derby again, the location worked for us and views from rooms on the back of the hotel are outstanding.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back side have the best view.

What a great hotel. My experience started long before I arrived. Booked the hotel but had a few questions, so emailed them. Very fast reply, all with a sense of humour and a welcoming tone. Arriving at the hotel it was just the same. Great personable service, friendly and reception couldn't do enought to help. When I encountered a small problem with the sink in the bathroom it was handled immediately. Turns out it was my fault all along, as I did know how to release the plug. The gentleman who came to fix it didn't make me feel stupid at all, he just fixed it with a smile. All the bar staff, wait staff and cleaners were the same. The Derby was recommended to me by a girlfriend and I in turn would recommend it to anyone. Great job guys, we loved staying with you!!

We came in on the train from Zurich and the hotel was right there. We had a room on the top floor with a view over the street with mountains in the background. Even though the room overlooked the train station, it was very quiet and had a large balcony. There was a nice lounge area on the top floor with outside seating that overlooked the Eiger. We had lunch in the attached restaurant when we arrived. Our room was small but there was enough room for our luggage. We had our large bags shipped directly to the train station and the hotel staff kindly picked them up and brought them to the room. The women at the front desk were wonderful. Evi was very friendly, cheerful and helpful all the time. Our two night stay was very pleasant.

29 May 2016, stayed in a room overlooking the railway line terminus, but very quiet and we all slept very well. Me, him, and Wanda Roo (see photo).
Chocolates, hearts, and mountain views from the balcony - not much more to wish for.
Varied menu, including creme brulee parfait, and delicious salad bar offerings.

Room Tip: Every window had a great view
