I was here only for three days and I was not impressed by this hotel. I wouldn't characterize it as a 4* hotel. Everything was average: the room (very modest), service (staff is not nice and not available), the catering was terrible, there was no variety and not enough food to feel satisfied. The location is nice though and if you get a room with a mountain view, the view is amazing.
In my opinion it is over-priced and over-rated.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with mountain view.

We had read some average reviews of this hotel before we arrived and frankly we were concerned. In the event we were delighted. The room was very good with excellent views. Service was fine and breakfast was outstanding. Yes, the room facilities were not right up to the latest one has come to expect in a modern hotel but we were not in Grindlewald to watch the TV or play on the Internet.

Swimming in the pool whilst looking up at the North Face of the Eiger will long live in my memory. The gym was very good for a hotel facility.

Room Tip: Face the Eiger.

Stayed here during a walking holiday, second time we have had accommodation here. Very spacious lobby and nice rooms although we overlooked the main street and up the mountain to First this time. Last visit we had fantastic views of the Eiger.
Both breakfast and dinner were enjoyable and waitresses were excellent.
One downside is that the hotel is dead at night.

Room Tip: Check what side of the hotel you will be located in. There is also a newer wing which doesn't a...

I spent three days at the Sunstar Hotel in Grindelwald during a scientific meeting. The hotel is comfortable and rooms are clean. Not very well furnished for a 4 star hotel. The suite didn't even have a music system or a dvd player (crazy for normal standards). The service is absolutely inadequate and insufficient. Courtesy doesn't seem to be important for the hotel management. Rough answers from simple waiters and slow service even for a simple coffee. The doorman/receptionist during night time was even worse if possible. Rude and mannerless.
I can only say that if I had to pay the stay there, which I didn't, I would have left in a couple of hours and they won't anyway see me again.

Ive stayed there in September and loved it. Very friedly staff, Nice Room and especially a nice lobby with awesome views to the Eiger North Face. Felt a little bit like in a nice Whistler Hotel. Definately highly recomendable !

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of a walking holiday and our honeymoon and were not disappointed. The hotel was lovely and in a great location. Staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel did not quite have the same personal atmosphere as the Sunstar in Wengen but I suspect this was due to the fact that it was a lot bigger, catering for groups.

Our room was great with a comfortable bed, very spatious bathroom and a balcony with spectacular views of the Eiger. The only downside was that there was no kettle in the room, this was a shock for my husband who is a keen tea drinker but he did get over it and enjoy the minibar which was included in the cost of the room.

We stayed half board and thought that dinner was great. 5 courses and plenty varied from night to night, good service too. Breakfast was also good with a range of things to chose from on the buffet.

Overall a great hotel in a top location, would recommend. There is heaps to do in the surrounding area, try hiring a trottibike from Bort...so much fun!

Not really a 4-star quality room but it was In a great location (offering a wonderful view) and one of very few hotels in Grindelwald that have indoor pool you can enjoy even with bad weather.

Breakfast was okay. The lobby lounge is nice and huge but it is often packed with group tourists. One way free pick-up from station was late and I guess they might not even have come if I hadn't called them. The driver seemed really unhappy and was not apologetic when meeting with us. We felt like we had to grovel for some reasons.

No free wifi but we knew it. The housekeeping staff was a bit awkward; 1. The staff was opening the room door with a master key and coming in right after knocking (ie without waiting for our answer) 2. After we asked only once for a set of towels, two different staff came to deliver at two different times. But it could be all understandable.

Still we enjoyed the hotel quite a lot until the last moment when the hotel manager from the office behind the front desk shouted at us!

I was with my 6yr old daughter who admired the lovely huge dog that was playing just behind the front desk. While waiting for a front desk staff to finish speaking to another customer and to give us the bags we left for a while, we're wishing to draw the dog's attention a little bit. Perhaps I was subconciously hopeful that any hotel manager wld come out and offer to take the bags out. The manager's reaction was shocking. He pulled such a frowned face, shook his head as if someone puked in front of him, and screamed "dont do it!!!" and walked further in. I dont know if he even swore in his own language at that time.

Frightened, I apologiesd instantly but regretted so much about having done it. My next thought was "what the hxxx". If he can't stand seeing or hearing any customer, why did he bother to leave the office door open to the front desk side or why do they even have an office next to front desk? Why did he not lock in the dog? How can he even work in the hotel business, damaging the hotel's image? My girl kept asking why she can't see the dog at all. Btw I noticed the hotel always keeps only one front desk staff who have to take two roles (both check-in/outs and concierge) and no matter how many in the queue waiting, people in the hotel office side do not care. All sitting in the back office enjoying the best view, they do not even say hello or offer any help when passing by. Yes job segregation is super clear. No concept or gesture of "hi welcome to the hotel. how can I help you?".

To be fair to the ladies at front desk (clearly on shift), they were mostly pleasant and very helpful.

So stay at this hotel for location and view and facilities, but please lower your expectation about the overall service ESP if you have younger ones with you. Really embarrassing. (fyi - before and after this hotel, we stayed at 3 other different hotels ranging from 3star boutique small hotel to 6star luxury one. And yes this was the worst)
