“Really nice hotel”
Reviewed 10 April 2008

Stayed here for three nights at the start of April for a conference. The hotel is in a great location at the centre of the village. Its a bit of a trek up if your going skiing as the village is really low.

The staff were very very friendly and couldnt do enough for us. We thought the public areas to be very nice, and the Spa, pool and gym (little small) were all modern and well looked after.

We didnt enjoy the food in the restaurant though. A touch bland and sterile although the views of the Eigar were stunning.

Rooms are adequate and alpine in style. Looking slightly tired, but did the job.

The Italian across the road and to the right is excellent with wonderful pizzas and the train to the Top of Europe at Jungfrau is amazing !

We stayed at the Sunstar for a weekend with 2 young children late in the 2008 ski season. I had stayed here once before for a work conference but the hotel was better than I remembered as a family venue.

Strong points:

- it's large. Big public areas, parking etc.
- rooms are also big, clean. We had a 3 room suite (i.e. 2 bedrooms and kitchen) which was about 2x the size of the last 3 room suite we had in a Swiss ski hotel
- the pool area is good
- we ate in one of the hotel restaurants (Adlerstube). Service and food was very good. The main restaurant is cheaper but very much a big hotel restaurant.
- it's located directly opposite the gondola for the First ski area. Blues and reds. If you want something more challenging, it's more of a schlepp.
- the rent rooms by the night outside of peak season. I know that sounds odd (surely that's what hotels do), but so many ski hotels just won't accept weekend bookings at all until the week before. Fine if you live in Zurich but not if you need to arrange flights.

One thing worth mentioning is the decor. I just don't understand how the rooms can be decorated in perfect 70s style (beige striped curtains, smoked glass bathroom fittings - the works) without being in bad repair. Either this stuff lasts 30+ years or they actually refitted the hotel in retro style at some point. Nothing wrong with it - certainly not shabby. A pleasantly odd change from anonymous hotel decor.

Service is friendly (good touches like the minibar being free). Really recommend the place.

  • Liked — Great facilities and room for the price
  • Disliked — It's a big hotel which generally isn't my preference. But they do "big hotel" well!

We stayed at ther Hotel end of December and early Jaunary this year. We were most impressed by the hotel staff and assorted amenities. We found the resteraunt sservice to be somewhat lacking this was due to the fact that they were very full. The hotel front desl staff were excellent and there reconmended ca\rriage ride by Heinrich wife or lady friend were the highlite of our visit. Many Russian nationals were staying there also very hunt friendly.
There was a magnificent fire in the lobby with plenty of wood to keep it going. and we noticed somebody ffilling upo the fireplacve every few minutes to keep out the cold. HIGHLY RECONMMENED

We stayed at the Sunstar for 10 days over Xmas and New Year's day and had a great time. The hotel bus picked us up at the train station. The hotel had spacious, clean rooms, the staff was very friendly and the food and service was great. Only minus point is thw wiFi-internet access which is NOT free of charge. The hotel is across the street from the First cable car which takes you straight to Grindelwald's northern skiing area and to get to the Scheidegg area there is a ski bus in front of the hotel.
Will definitely stay there again.

My husband and I stayed at the Sunstar for one week in early October. We had a standard room that faced the town of Grindelwald. The carpet was very dirty and I called and asked if we could have another room, but they said they did not have any other rooms available. The man that checked us in was very rude and not very customer friendly. The rest of the staff was friendly and helpful. The room is average, clean and it has a mini bar in the room that is free and refilled every day with two beers, two waters, and two sodas. It was nice to have that after hiking all day. The best feature of the hotel was the view at the back of the hotel of the Mountains. It is just so Beautiful. We had to pay $22.00 a day per person for the mini bar and breakfast. The breakfast was good. Eggs, assorted breads and cheeses, sausage, bacon and fruits, cereals. About anything that would be at a buffet set up. The location is also very good because it is close to the train station and the First chair which is nice for hiking or skiing in the winter. The train station is also a short walk. Overall I enjoyed our stay at the Sunstar, but I would probably stay somewhere else next time. We traded a two bedroom timeshare in Kauaii for this and we got a standard hotel room and then was still charged the extra fees for the breakfast and the hotel tax fee. We also had to pay $10.00 SF a day for parking. I saw serveral other bed and breakfast that were cheaper and included breakfast in the room rate.

We arrived at the hotel after being collected from the station by the hotel porter. The receptionist Stefanie greeted us with a welcome glass of orange and was really welcoming. She showed us around the hotel and then escorted us to our room which was facing the first cable car. Our room was lovely. We were really taken in by the personal touches like the quilts being turned down and the chocolate on the pillow every night. We also had the set menu one night which is displayed in the lift daily. It was 36 swiss francs for 4 courses and it was really nice, just a shame we didn't fancy anything on the menu the rest of the week. We did go to various restaurants nearby which were really nice, including Unkel Toms, (lovely pizzas) and Le Rendevous (nice steaks and lovely cheese fondue) We would stay at this hotel again and really want to go back in winter when there is loads of snow. All the staff at the hotel were really nice and looked after us throughout our stay

After a ver long day leaving home at 4-30am. We arrived at the hotel at 9pm we were told they were keeping a cold plate of food for us but if we wished to go to the dinning room straight away we could still have dinner, which was very welcoming after the food on the plane was a salami sandwich and a drink we were ready for a full meal. After dinner our bags were taken to our room and coats hung up, there was also a large plate of various fresh fruit for us. The fridge was stocked with beers, coke, water plain and sparkling, orange juice and sprite, which was repenished every day.The rest of our stay was perfect the staff were prepared to go the extra mile to enable you to enjoy your stay. The rooms were clean and every night they came to turn down the bed put a chocolate on our pillow and place a little mat at the side of the bed wich said goodnight when you went to bed and good morning when you arose. The food was varied and plentiful and well cooked and presented.During the holiday we had glorious weather the trip to jungfrau joch was spectacular plus a huskie ride was great fun. When we came to sadly leave we again had an early start this is something to be considered when booking the holiday the transfer time on the train from Grindlewald Zurich airport is 3hours plus the 2 hour check in time can make a very early start. We had to be on the 6-30am train which meant we would miss out on breakfast they arranged for a packed lunch containing 2 sandwiches plus fruit and chocolate and water to drink. the night clerk made us cup of coffee and took us down to the station in the mini bus. We are already planning a return trip next year.
