Being greeted by a huge smile when you enter a hotel is a teriffic start. We arrived at 9.30 am so that we could make the most of our time in Grindelwald. We were soon given lots of helpful advice and sold tickets for the train up to Kleine Scheidegg, from where we did the lovely 3 hour walk back to Grindelwald, underneath the Eiger. The wild flower meadows were amazing.
The hotel is traditional, rather than super de-luxe.Our room was fine with great views from the balcony.
Although you can take bikes on the train,I think that it is only the trains after 4.00 pm which allow them on. So the next morning I put my mountain bike on the back of the bus and went up to Grosse Scheidegg. Although there are quite a few marked cycle tracks, they are almost all either small tarmac or stone roads, some of which are pretty steep.I had a great ride back down with fantastic views across to the Eiger.
We loved Grindelwald.

The Hotel Gletschergarten is a nice hotel that feels like a bed and breakfast. I never saw anyone other than the husband and wife owners at the reception. They provided excellent service, including complimentary rides to and from the train station. Because the hotel is not heavily staffed (at least when I visited, i.e., during the summer), some of the service you might expect from a larger hotel (e.g., room service) aren't available.

My room, though quite clean, was small and basic. Oddly, they put two twin beds together and only made one of them; the other bed had an exposed mattress during my stay. On the positive side, the balcony offered a beautiful view of Mount Eiger.

I found breakfast and dinner to be lackluster.

The location is excellent in the sense that there are terrific views of the mountains, but it's a short uphill walk from the city center.

Breathtaking views from the front of the hotel of the Eiger, spacious rooms that are traditional Swiss style with modern facilities of fast wifi and a great range of channels on the TV (the only place I've stayed that had all the BBC and ITV channels as if I was at home in the UK). Very friendly and attentive staff and nothing was too much trouble for the owners who were very knowledgeable and helpful on anything and everything you might want to do in the area. We got 3 day travel tickets for the many cog railways and cable cars from the hotel and tips on how to make the most of them with the available time and this is what made the holiday a truly special one. The hotel is located just far enough away from the centre to be quieter at night, but with a free pass for the local bus it's easy to get into town or to the railway station. Grindelwald's 2 cable cars are just a few minutes walk away. All in all, I can't see how this place could be any better!

Room Tip: It may cost a little extra, but the views from the front of the hotel make these rooms extra special...

Positives:
- Very friendly folks running the hotel.
- Hotel restaurant was one of the better values in town.
- Rooms are cleaned very efficiently. We went out to have breakfast and by the time we got back the room was invariably clean.
- Breakfast is excellent.
- Views from balcony are gorgeous
- Property has washer and dryer at a reasonable cost.

Negatives:
Nothing huge but
- Foosball/pool in the basement are not free.
- Our room shows signs of age.
- The hotel is a bit off the center (there is a free bus that stops next to it)

Room Tip: higher floors are better as there is noise coming off the street

We recently stayed here for two nights in the apartment across the road. My husband, our two children, and I were very comfortable in the apartment (and had a great view of the Eiger), but it was the level of help and customer service that really elevated our stay. We are somewhat quiet and don't typically ask much of hotel owners or staff, but since we hadn't had time to do much research, we relied on Gabriela and Gerhard for their advice about what to do each day. Their guidance was wonderful, particularly the recommendations about what our children would like to do and what would be too much for them. The first day, we went up to First on the cable car, hiked most of the way to the lake, back down to Bort for lunch and playground and then Trotti bikes back down to Grindelwald. Perfect day! The second day we went to Mannlichen, up to the lookout, had lunch, and then back to Grindelwald. We also stopped in Interlaken for the Heimwehfluh which the kids loved. Such wonderful advice and service can't be beat!

The hotel is run by a friendly and helpful family of its 4th generation since their ancestor started business more than 140 years ago. The building is seasoned but is clean and well-maintained, and moreover, it has class and style and historic atmosphere. A bit far from the Grindelwalt train station, but is still very convenient and is reasonably within the walking distance and very close to a ropeway gondola leading to First where you should be able to enjoy fantastic and very typical - exactly what you'd expect of - Swiss mountain views. Dinner at the restaurant offers a fixed menu, but is flexible as much as they can. We had a very comfortable stay, and would come back again next time we visit Grindelwalt.

From the moment we walked in we felt like honored guests. Family owned - their dedication shows in the wonderful service they provide. Clean rooms, nice breakfast and perfect location for touring Grindelwald and the nearby sights. I will definitely stay here on my next visit. Try to get a balcony room if you can- the balconies are big and the view is magical.

Room Tip: Ask for front balcony
