“Nice but Needs some TLC”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2014

This hotel has an amazing history but it needs to update a few things. Firstly the pillows made it impossible for us to get a good night sleep which is vitally important. The plumbing needs a rework as we could hear everyone upstairs flush their toilet.
The food and service was excellent but the wine list was all $$$ and there was no coffee available in the room. They also made us sit at the same table everytime we ate. Why couldn't we sit where we wanted? The location is at the end of town so definitely not ski in and out. The bus is free but in peak hour it is packed with people and their dogs!
It was nice but they should really improve some basics.

We spent 4 wonderful days at this charming Swiss hotel. It was truly an outstanding experience. The hosts Gabriella and Gerhardt are exceptionally warm, welcoming and committed to providing exceptional service to their guests. Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Grindelwald.

What a wonderful, exquisite and most hospitable place to stay!
We had a few nights here in this beautiful, family-run hotel during our Christmas visit in Switzerland. Even as you arrive you feel like "coming home"! Gabriela and Gerhard, together with their family and their very well trained staff make you feel very welcome, are always extremely friendly, helpful and very professional, yet treating you like part of the family.
We all loved the authentic decor, the beautiful Christmas decorations, the cosy rooms, excellent food, friendly and professional service and - to top it of, the great views up to the mountains.
The location is also excellent, as you have many opportunities to go either out for the many winter sports, or go hiking and exploring (or even roller-sledging) in Summer. The Bernese Oberland offers endless opportunities with its many trains, gondolas, buses and ski lifts. Gary and Gabriela and crew are always ready to give you helpful advice, you can purchase all tickets right there at the hotel. When you are back from an amazing trip into the spectacular summit world of the Jungfrau region or the fairy-tale world of the Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe, with its unique, breathtaking views over glaciers and mountain peaks, the friendliness, smell of a home cooked delicious meal and the cozy rooms will make you feel like coming home and resting well!
I can highly recommend this beautiful hotel and am looking forward to coming back again.
Thank you very much to the Michel family and their staff!

Stayed here over Christmas with friends and had a great time. The family set out to create a family atmosphere and achieve it in a wonderful way, nothing is too much trouble, from transport to and from the railway station, booking trips, advice etc. They made Christmas Eve very special as most of us were a long way from home, the food was excellent, Father Christmas made an appearance with a small gift for everyone and we had lots of fun. We were very sad to leave and wish we could have squeezed in a few more days. Thank you all Jnet C

We had an amazing stay at the apartment (not in the hotel itself- just across the street) at the Gletschergarten this past summer. Gary and Gabriella who own and manage the place are dedicated, energetic, lovely people who want visitors to their hotel and their town to have a wonderful experience. We did. While Grindelwald itself is rather awash in tourists- it is for a reason- the surrounding mountains are mind blowing. This hotel is a spark of authenticity and soul in the somewhat manufactured town. I recommend it without reservation.

If you're going to Grindelwald and want to enjoy an authentic family-run hotel with unparalleled views - look no further. These folks love what they're doing and it shows from the moment you arrive to that sad time you realize you are checking out. This is actually the second time we've stayed there, but the first time with a large group.

First of all, the owners take great pride in their property and your overall experience. They are beyond accommodating in all regards. They'll help you book excursions, purchase train tickets (w/ all relevant discounts), get you to/from the train if you aren't up for the walk, honor special requests in their delicious restaurant, keep the bar open for your group and on and on.

The glacial views are also spectacular. This is one of those rare hotels where sitting on the balcony and just taking in the scenery is an experience. If you're in a small group, you can request rooms which share a balcony - which is fantastic. We'd have a happy hour out on the porch before dinner.

And regarding dinner, the food they prepare and the service are both top notch. You don't order off a menu, rather, they post the next night's meal in the foyer and you can decide if it sounds good to you. After a busy day on the trains, gondolas and on your feet - it's a treat to come home to a hotel filled with the scents of home cooking. Besides the ease of taking in a great meal downstairs, the food we had each night was fantastic.

Also, this hotel is located at the "end" of town, making it a pretty peaceful setting overall.

Room Tip: Request rooms facing the glaciers if possible and if you have 2+ rooms - request those sharing a bal...

We have stayed here at least 3 times, and will go back. Grindelwald is a beautiful place in Switzerland! The beautiful snow capped mountains can be seen from the balcony on the front side of the hotel where we always stay. The owners are great! Always giving great information of where to go, what to see. Make sure you go to First (close by) and do the beautiful hike with the snow capped mountains so close to you! Just a very amazing place to visit and stay!

Room Tip: Get a view of the little church and the mountains!
