“A Great Hotel in a Wonderful Location”
Reviewed 24 January 2013

It's the second time we've stayed at the Wolter and it just gets better.

The staff are so friendly and always seem to be happy.

The rooms are warm, clean and comfortable.

Breakfast is great, dinner is lovely and what can I say about the heated outdoor terrace other than I can't think of a better place for a cold beer and people watching :)

Training the waitresses, especially for breakfast service, could easily move this experience from v. good to excellent.

Overall, this is an excellently located hotel with very good facilities and excellent reception services. A particularly nice touch is that the owner, Monic Kaufmann, visited the breakfast tables most mornings and made conversation with the guests. Rooms are a pleasant mix of modern/traditional and those on the street facing side of the hotel have a great view of the Eiger (well worth the extra cost). There are a number of 'budget' apartments and, although the view from these is nothing to write home about, they provide an economical, clean and comfortable way to visit this premium location.

The breakfast is good but let down by slow and disinterested service - it took an age to get coffee and tea - and this was a very quiet, low season week. The waitresses dIdn't notice when things ran out or were missing and slow to fix things when asked.

Service in the restaurant and on the terrace seemed altogether sharper - very good value lunch menu. The hotel's street terrace (heated!) is a treasure and the best place in town for watching all the comings and goings of an international resort.

Room Tip: If you choose an apartment, throw a j-cloth and a pan cleaner into your luggage to save buying a meg...

The hotel is located right next to the central station of Grindelwald with connections to the Eiger and various ski resorts. If you can take the train, the breathtaking ride through the mountains is Swiss at its best. We had rooms to the side, so noises weren't an issue. The reception at the hotel provided a really warm and professional welcome. Dinner (half board) was delicious and well composed most of the days and the price was reasonable. The excellent breakfast buffet was more than you expect from a three-star hotel and again the always friendly and helpful staff made us feel at home. Thanks!

The Good: Central Hotel Wolter is as the hotel's name infers, it is dead center in Grindelwald. You can't ask for a more convenient location, only 50 meters from the train station which is fantastic if you're skiing as we were. It has a heated terrace outside the restaurant on the ground level which was very nice to sit at after skiing for a drink of Gluhwein. We were also able to buy our ski tickets right at the hotel which is superb. I must also mention that the hotel internet was fantastic for my us(obviously they fixed the issue that we saw in previous reviews), especially my 13 year old. He had great internet connection in all parts of the hotel including the outside terrace. The waitresses demeanor was very nice, they all tried their best to get things done, but at times seemed overwhelmed. The stay includes free access to the sportscenter across the street which has a pool (bring your own towels), ice skating(skates for a fee), an indoor rope course above the ice skating rink, and a curling hall.

The Bad: We arrived the day after they opened for the winter season so it took their waitresses time to figure out how to do things. We had half-board and sometimes it was a very long wait between courses as the waitresses and cooks seemed a little disorganized. Management needs to work on training their staff to pay attention to detail such as serving ladies first, taking plates off the table when finished, etc. The dining room was a little crowded so having different serving times would have been useful. It is the little things that brings people back.

The Ugly: We rented a family room as we were 3 adults and 1 Child. We "assumed" it would be a bigger room. However, when we arrived, it seemed that both rooms were smaller than a larger double room. The staff was great in switching our room to 2 doubles but we could only get it for 4 days vice 7. So, we ended up staying in the family room for 3 nights. I would only rent the family room if you have 2 small kids. It is definately not for 3 or 4 adults since the bathroom is shared and very small. I would recommend the superior double rooms on the south side if you want a view of the Eiger and the ski slopes.

Summary: Yes, I would stay there again, but would ask for a superior double. Overall, it was a great experience and the hotel did try their best.

Room Tip: Choose the south side superior double rooms for a great view of the mountains.

We actually stayed here is Sep 2011. We hadn't been to Switzerland beforeand the purpose of our visit w walking in the local mountains. The hotel is in walking distance of the bus park and train station and lots of nice restaurants. We got a room with an eiger view and were on a corner so got a huge balcony. The rooms aren't posh but there is everything you need and they are spacious (or the one we had was). weather there of the night we arrived and we add to feel welcome in the restaurant even though it was late. The food was good. Breakfast was of a good standard also. We will return to this hotel and would recommend it. The staff really got to know us and made the holiday special.

I can only confirm and support the earlier positive opinions. The service make a lot of effort to
make you happy. The boss personally asks guest how they like it. Restaurant - very good food.
Very good location, very central. Directly by train and bus station.

Room Tip: superrior room with the vie on Eiger.

Can walk to everything. Big clean rooms however no internet in rooms. We had to go to the bar which had a slow connection. Breakfast was standard for Europe however the evening meal was great. The free parking was a plus.
