“Americans, don't go here”
Reviewed 20 October 2008

This is a 4 star hotel - and totally overrated. Everything is old about this hotel. All the furniture, the restrooms, and the place is a mess. Outside of the hotel the staff seemed to think piling up old unused stuff against the hotel walls would be considered nice.
The staff itself at checkin was ignorant, had no interest in good service and hardly ever smiled. They didn't show us around, just showed us our room and said we should read about the rest. Nobody asked about our baggage. I guess they don't need to because the hotel seemed well booked. I only ask myself why. Maybe this is normal Swiss behaviour?

There was no internet access from the room. We had to go to the lobby, where we found two old phone booths with computers in them. There was no privacy, because you could not close the door behind you without almost suffocating from the heat that builds up in that little booth from the computer.

We mainly booked the hotel because it was claimed to be a kid friendly hotel. Well, the play room for kids was in the basement of the hotel - so you can never let your kid go there by itself - or even go there with him and feel comfortable. You reach this room by going through corridors with lots of spare chairs and some staff quarters - very weird. Next to that, the play room was a total mess. Then the playground. You would think it is next to the terrace so you can drink a nice cup of tea at the restaurant and read a book while being able to have an eye on your kids - forget it. The playground is on the side of the hotel, next to the trash containers, and I had to remove a blackberry bush from the slide.

One good thing: the food. We ate very well with lots of variety. I guess the restaurant chef has nothing to do with the rest of the hotel. He and his staff were courteous and smiled.

  • Liked — view of the mountains, the food
  • Disliked — old hotel, rude staff, bad playroom and playground

We arrived at the end of the ski season and were very pleasantly surprised to be upgraded twice to a wonderful room (Eiger superior) which had a huge balcony with direct views of the Eiger, an electronic sun shade and lovely sun lounger as well as chairs and tables - great for sunbathing - yes it was hot!

The hotel was lovely, we were the only guests on some nights and had the whole spa area to ourselves. The sauna is fantastic - little star lights in the ceiling, aromatherapy oils and soothing music playing.

I wouldn't recommend a massage from the person they get in - I have never had such a bad massage!

The breakfast was wonderful - so much choice and very friendly staff - wonderful coffee.

Bit of a walk from town but there are buses and it is so quiet. If you are in town, I expect your views of the mountains would be restricted

They even gave us a chocolate bunny to say "Happy Easter!"

Not the greatest place I've stayed in. The staff seemed indifferent, we had to carry our own bags up to our room (I don't mind lugging my own bags but for the price I thought it would be included). Was up the hill so a bit of a walk from downtown which we didn't mind but others might. Our room was pretty small but it had a balcony with lovely views of the mountains. Would have probably liked the hotel more if the staff was just a bit friendlier.

We just returned from a 2-day stay at Hotel Kirchbuhl and we liked this hotel very much. It was a bit up the hill from downtown but it really didnt matter because downtown Grindelwald wasnt as lively as we hoped...This hotel had a great breakfast, shuttle to the ski slopes, cute bar in the lobby, two darling dogs that live at the hotel full-time, clean rooms, great views of the Alps, ski storage room in the basement of the hotel and very nice owners who spoke English to us....we would recommend this hotel very much. The staff even upgraded our room without us asking and currently they are mailing a pair of shoes that were left in our room. Overall, good stay in Grindelwald (for some local fun, go and find the Hutte Cafe Bar in the middle of town - it looks like a shack made out of 2x4's but it was actually a lot of fun!)

Gridelwald is a beautiful place and Jungfrau was excellent. The hotel staff were extremely rude and the hotel manageress even worse. They included halfboard in our price which was presented as 5 course buffet dinner. The first night (friday) was excellent. Saturday however was different - the buffet did not exist - it was a fixed so called five course dinner for $190AUD which one course was a glass of orange juice, then followed by a liver patte, then followed by some lettuce and beetroot shavings, then some meat, then a surpise chocolate moose. In Australia this is flat out being two courses. Swiss are supposidly known for their food and this hotel advertises "The versatilely, wide range of exquisite dishes and wines entice not only the hotelguests but also the gourmet in to our house. As members of the Gilde established swiss cooks and Chaine des Rotisseurs we guarantee for a high kitchen quality." Well I am sorry but this food was not up to standard and should be removed from the gilde. We refused to eat at the hotel the following night and they still charged us for it anyway even after arguing with the manageress. They present a great website but do not live up to it. We do not recommend this hotel in any way!
