It's true what they say that a hotel that boasts a fine view may not find it necessary to invest in other departments. Alas, a superb view of the Eiger is not enough to make a stay in a hotel pleasant, even a relatively inexpensive hotel like this one. The key word here being "relatively", since prices in Grindelwald seem to be a notch higher than those in neighboring towns, and value smaller. Had the service been even slightly better we may have overlooked the dirty room and the bizarre and over-run shower-in-closet arrangement (dating from the 70'?). Since it was not, all we could do was try to find some consolation in the bircher muesli at breakfast, which was probably our sole positive experience there.

Hotel Lauberhorn is a tidy, family-run hotel with a lot of character that is great value for expensive Grindelwald.

It is located a 15 minute walk from town but Grindelwald is a walker's paradise plus with the elevation you get fantastic views and a quieter hotel off the busy main street. It was also one of the few hotels in Grindelwald with plenty of free car parking, which is why it was perfect for us.

We found the team - particularly Conny and Beni - to be so helpful and friendly. Conny was a wealth of information on the local area and places of interest. The breakfast was fantastic and very generous spread - particularly the delicious home-made products and yoghurts.

The rooms were spacious and tidy with a balcony and lovely views to the Eiger with a huge and comfortable bed! The free wifi was a bonus - it can drop out a little but for checking emails on an iPhone is fine. There is free internet and computer in the library if you need be on the internet.

It is an older hotel so you could hear other guests in rooms next to you and above you, however it's promoted as an outdoor enthusiasts hotel so most guests seem to be in bed by 10pm and then it's really quiet.

I'm quite surprised by previous comments made about this hotel. For a one/two-star hotel, you can't expect kettles etc in rooms and the shower was sizeable and fantastic after a long day out and about - I don't see a problem that it's in the wall?

This hotel promotes itself as accommodation that does things a little differently than the norm - particularly being a mountain bike enthusiast hotel in hiking central Grindelwald - which is not for everyone but they're very upfront with what to expect.

We stayed in one of the "chic" rooms at the Lauberhorn. It was a very small room that had been redone to make it look trendy. But there were some real deficiencies, particularly a very small shower that opened directly on the bedroom. It was quite strange to step directly from the shower to the bedroom. On the positive side, the balcony had a great view of the Eiger. Staff seemed eager to please, but they really didn't have the reflexes. For example, when we asked where the Mannlichen lift was a staff member gestured "over there" with a vague reference rather than breaking out a map. Wireless Internet worked, but marginally. Breakfast was good with a reasonably diverse set of dishes and an automatic coffee machine that produced OK but mediocre beverages. It's the cheapest decent hotel in town, but don't expect a lot.

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The staff that I dealt with were, with one exception, very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and pleasant, if a little basic - for example there was no kettle. The hotel was interesting, with an unusual style seemingly targeted towards outdoor sports enthusiasts, and had a number of nice rooms in which to sit and get a coffee or a drink. The breakfasts were very good, being a buffett of croissants, bread, meat, cheese, coffee, orange juice and so on. I can't think of any serious downsides to this hotel and would stay there again. The hotel was located on the outskirts of town and so a 15-20 minute walk was required to get into town.
I was however surprised that the owner, Beni, was somewhat cold and disinterested as we checked out - no smile, no 'how was your stay' or anything like that.
But, all in all a pleasant stay.

I don't like writing negative reviews but Conny and Beni, the Lauberhorns' owners are unfriendly, phony people who shouldn't be working with the general public. When I arrived with my wife for a 5 night stay I asked Beni if he could recommend a great hike. His response was "that's a silly question". Very condescending and rude, as if I asked a stupid question! Cony, his wife, wasn't any better. I asked for some help setting up a tennis game at the Grindelwald Tennis Center and she acted totally put out by my request for a little German translation with the non-english speaking man who took court reservations. When we left the hotel after a 5 night stay, we asked Conny to drive us down the hill to the train station. She obliged, but on the five minute drive did not utter a single word to us! No questions about how we enjoyed our stay at the Lauberhorn or where we were traveling next ! She was very cold and ungrateful for our business. Totally infuriating!!
The Lauberhorn is a steep 15 minute walk from the heart of spectacular Grindelwald and can be quite taxing physically to get back to, especially if you have been hiking all day or have a late dinner. The rooms are quite small but the view was magnificent. The view made up for the rude owners. Conny was quite friendly to her German and Italian guests at the check-out counter, asking them how their stay was. Not us. Maybe she doesn't like Americans. We won't be back!!

Eiger North Face was very good from room balcony, that was GREAT View.
Noisy Thin wall beside ROOMs was not GOOD. It was nervous for me.
So you should finish Toilet and Shower until PM 10:00.

Location is about 3km from Central city. it takes 4 Bus stop.
Breakfast was Good!
Telephone facility was none. (Shared) Wireless LAN good!

We were very impressed with the view from our room of the north face of the Eiger. The breakfasts were also very good. The hotel is on the edge of Grindelwald and therefore away from the noise of the town. However there is no sound insulation between rooms, consequently the sound of people walking around in the room above us kept us awake, not to mention the sound of people using the toilet in the room next door! Because of this I would not stay here again.
