Bachalpsee Lake is located near First, a mountain place in the center of Switzerland. You can arrive to the lake, if you do a trekking from First (where you arrive with a cablecar from Grindelwald). Really the excursion is very beautiful and after the lake you can arrive to Faulhorn peak, a nearer mountain. The lake is very beautiful. It is a very good place to relax and rest in the middle of the excursion to the Faulhorn Peak. Very nice views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

It took us about 1.5 hours to get to the Lake from First - however I have a mountain goat for a husband and 2 super athletic teens. It's a beautiful walk - the first part is a bit steep and I huffed and puffed some (I'm the least in shape of our little bunch) plus I stop, take it in, take pictures and just generally enjoy myself on hikes. So my family just cruises along until they almost lose sight of me and then they stop and wait for my picture taking until I catch up. But it's a mid-range hike - and not a ton of elevation gain (but some).

The thing is it's such a gorgeous hike - it's like you found the best pictures of scenery and they're all from here. We went in late June and it was hot so there were little waterfalls everywhere, flowers blooming, snow capped mountains and lush greenery.

What I'd suggest - stop at the Coop in Grindelwald and have a small back pack or string bag w/ a little towel in it to set down - then get a baguette, some hard cheese (easy to break off with you hands), some chocolate, crackers, and a salami or some sort of meat and when you get to the lake - have a picnic. We did and it was fabulous. We didn't need any silverware or anything - we just broke the bread and cheese and such.

A definite highlight our our whole vacation.

Must go in a life time!! And should go when u re still young as it is not very very easy to walk up slope and on a rocky trail. But, It's really worthy to see. Recommended to arrive before noon to catch the reflection of the mountain on water. We seems like walking in heaven!! The scene is so beautiful!! Blue sky, yellow flowers, green grass, white snow and u can see the first cliff from far far away, so that you will know how miraclous it is built!! But remember to choose the right season. We come on early July.

This is a fabulous, if lengthy walk from First. The scenery is beautiful, but do not be fooled by the Swiss timings for walks unless you are a very fit and experienced walker. Most people took at least an extra 30 minutes to reach the lake. sadly, on June 20th it was still frozen!
