Hotel Aspen is not only right on the ski slope but they have a gormet chef as well. Every meal was an adventure. Staff was friendly, very helpful, and the place spotless. We spent 3 nights there including Christmas and had one of the best ski days we've ever had the next day. We got the family room at the very top of the building and for the 4 of us, which included two adult kids, it was fantastic, with a view of the valley floor. There was room for 9 people in that room. Bus came by outside every 30 minutes to take you down the hill to town. Can't say enough about this hotel. Found it on Trip Advisor, read the earlier reviews, looked at the menu on line, and was a bit worried about the location. Don't be.

Nice location on the skislopes, nice view, nice infrastructure, nice breakfast. But I really wonder what it takes for the owner to say "hello, how are you?" when you meet him on the staircase! For me it seems they are just too spoiled as they get their customers anyway.

I stayed at Aspen for a day in October 2010. To summarize, I was looking to use it as a base to travel around, but ended up staying most of the time in and around the hotel. Enough said.

Location: The hotel is 4-5 kms away from Grindelwald. While we were concerned this could be a hinderance (as we did not have a car), we had no complains at the end. The hotel is regularly covered by the local bus, and the chalet owners are kind enough to drive you to and from the station.

Hotel: The hotel is set in an amazing part of Grindelwald. Away from the chaos, serene, with greenery all around, and mountains covering 3 sides. The sceneries and views around the hotel are amazing, and we had an awesome time just walking around aimlessly. We got an awesome room (with balcony) that overlooked the mountains. Room was spacious, well set-up, and the bathroom was very good.

Staff: Very helpful and kind. The restaurant has a good menu (and also caters to vegetarians, yay). One small issue when we noticed the lack of soap in the bathroom. Staff seemed to think it was in place, but quickly provided it on realising their mistake.

Socialising around: Ofcourse not the place if you are looking for a nightlife around the hotel. However, we were looking for a calm in-the-hills chalet and this was perfect. Although slightly expensive, it is a bargain when compared to the hotels closer to the station.

Verdict: Great stay, surely coming back if we ever go to Grindelwald again (I hope we do), and 100% recommend to everyone. Perfect getaway for a couple with romance in mind. Pretty surprised with its low rating I should admit.

The hotel was nice, the restaurant was amazing. However, the rooms were just okay, not anything worth noting. I thought it was expensive for what you got but yes the view was amazing and so was the location. I didn't care for the service, not all that friendly and never returned my emails.....maybe because we only stayed for 1 night....not worthy of their effort. I would probably camp there before spending money on the room.

Aspen is both a campsite and hotel. Tents, campervans & caravans pitch within a few feet of the rear of the hotel; the reception and other common parts such as the toilets necessarily serve both camping and hotel guests, but here lies a major problem! It's painfully clear that the staff and management are resentful that camping guests freely use the hotel bar/reception areas(after checking in/out or buying food & drink) - a hotel guest for example would not be required to constantly buy drinks whilst sitting in the reception, but the camping guests are.

When we checked in we specifically asked if it was possible to use the internet with our laptop and we were told that this was no problem - even by our tent if the signal would reach. After pitching our tent we sat in a corner of the (empty) bar to check emails for perhaps ten minutes, but didn't buy any drinks. Later that evening we sat outside the hotel for drinks and again checked emails. No problem so far.

The next day we popped into the hotel (which was completely empty) to briefly check our emails. We didn't order a drink. The waitress was very frosty and almost immediately the internet stopped working. Later that evening we ordered a few drinks at the bar and checked our emails. The staff were still very unfriendly.

The following day it became very clear that the internet was being switched off when we entered the reception. My partner politely asked the manageress if we could sit in the bar (empty again) to check emails. The manageress didn't really answer and seemed very uncomfortable. My partner asked if it was a problem that we were checking emails without buying a drink, at which point the manageress became angry and said "you campers just want everything cheap cheap" (bear in mind that we have bought drinks in the bar each evening, and bread, and cheese and milk each morning...and we do also pay to stay!)

My partner, feeling rather shocked and uncomfortable after the manageress’s outburst, bought a drink and sat down to check her emails. After hearing what had happened, I decided that it would be best if we left the next morning, as we were clearly unwelcome. I went to the reception and asked the manageress if I could pay the bill as we would be leaving in the morning. I also asked if there was a problem with my partner using the internet. At this point the manageress became emotional and angry again, saying "we are a hotel, we are a restaurant, there is always problems with the camping" she then thrust my visa card back at me and said "I don't want your money, you can leave now, leave in the morning, I don't care" and she stormed off. This was quite an outburst. We walked back to our tent, feeling pretty shocked, and began to pack up as we felt very uncomfortable about staying any longer when we were clearly so unwelcome. (It was 5pm in the evening and not an ideal time to be leaving and looking for other accommodation in peak season).

It is also worth saying that the campers notice board made clear the Wi-Fi was free to use and the access code was provided. IT DID NOT SAY ONLY WHEN YOU CONSTANTLY BUY DRINKS.

This place needs to decide what it actually is. If the management perceive themselves as running an upmarket hotel, then that is what they should do. They should not be so happy to take the money from the many campers, whilst at the same time making them feel unwelcome.

NOTE TO CAMPERS! The views from the site are fantastic, but the facilities are very dated and at times pretty grubby. Expect to brush your teeth next to the rabbit food being stored inside the toilets or stand in lots of bird droppings not cleared from the area around the outside basins. You get the picture!!

Simply wonderful! I knew the setting would be amazing but I did not realise how good. The views from the hotel seem unreal. I was prepared for great views and fantastic walking but what truly made the holiday was the wonderfully relaxed and friendly service as well as the "gourmet" food. Guesthaus Aspen is in to the last 100 for the best restaurant in Switzerland and still going in the competition- the food easily lives up to this billing. Is this the most enjoyable stay I have had in a hotel? - taking setting, service, food and room into consideration I would say so. Would I come back? Definitely!

We spent 7 nights in Hotel Aspen and were very happy with the choice we had made.
As already mentioned by other travellers, the hotel is located about 5km from the center of Grindelwald - which accounts for great 360 degree views, but might be a problem for those without a car (not our case).
The hotel itself is delightfully picturesque on the outside, with its traditional wooden facade and the beautiful sun terrace. I would have loved, though, to see more flowers hanging from the balconies. Our room (facing Grindelwald) was quite large, very comfortable, spotlessly clean every day - not your typical chalet room though (a bit too modern and impersonal for me, alpine-style wood furniture would definitely have its charm). The balcony is common to all the rooms on a certain floor and side of the house, but we did not find that disturbing in any way. Each room has its own outdoor table and pair of chairs in its section of the balcony.
We arrived [very] late but enjoyed a warm and efficient welcome. The hotel appears to be owned by a nice, young, mountain-loving family. They live on the premises and are available in case of a medical emergency all night long. Upon arrival, we were provided with a handful of tourist guides on the area, which proved to be very useful and saved a lot of precious time on the following morning.
Breakfast is good rather than great, but the breakfast room is charming and has panoramic views over Grindelwald and the Eiger. The breakfast staff was very polite and helpful.
As other reviewers pointed out, the hotel restaurant is very good. Our best (and most expensive, for that matter) dinner in the Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen area was at the hotel: very good service, creative cuisine, lovely traditional ambiance.
All in all, we had a great stay in a valley that is beautiful beyond words - would defintely recommend both the village/area and the hotel.
