This hotel has been entirely renovated and the new owner reopened this summer 2012.
Refurbishment is very stylish, beautiful hammam/spa and great outside jacuzzi just by the ski slope. You can ski directly from the hotel.
All this sounds great...but the charm was completely broken by the terrible behavior of owners and staff - a mix of incompetence and not caring about customers. The receptionist was very slow and not suitable for a 4 star hotel, dinner and breakfast staff only spoke German and needed 15 minutes to bring you the menu, etc...The owners do not have a customer-friendly attitude at all. Not corresponding to the price they charge!
The only nice guy was Antonio, the shuttle driver.
In conclusion, it could have been a nice surprise in Grindelwald, but we will not go back.

I stayed at the Aspen with a friend shortly after they reopened under new ownership after a major refurbishment. The hotel is very stylish throughout - our room (a 1 room suite with kitchen) was really fantastic and we had unbelievable views of the Eiger and across to the village from our balcony. The communal areas are also nicely done and the spa is lovely.

The owners are really friendly and working hard to make this hotel a success. However, when we were there, the restaurant service was very disorganised and on our first night it took more than 2 hours to have dinner. They also missed a trick by leaving us sitting at our table for ages without a drink. I am hoping that these were just teething troubles and that as their team gains experience, the service will improve.

The hotel is a drive away from the village (I think there is a bus service too). This is fine in the summer - although a bit inconvenient if you want to go out and have a drink. I am not sure how it would work in the winter - the road up is narrow and windy and it would be a 4WD/snow chain type of road in the snow which would really be a pain. It does look like it is very close to the slopes though so I assume that you should be able to ski in/ski out.

I would definitely stay here again and I think if they sort out the service in the restaurant, it will really be a fantastic hotel, and they will make more money by selling people more drinks!!!

Room Tip: Make sure you get a view of the Eiger

We stayed with our family at Aspen which recently renewed a significant part of their hotel and restaurant facilities. A great place to stay with a fantastic view to the Eiger mountain. Good breakfast (included) and walking distance to the village of Grindelwald. The natural beauty around the hotel is a given. Great stay.

The location is great, just a bit out of town, with wonderful views and mountains as backdrop. The rooms are clean, tidy andall the facilities you would need. The only downside is the price seems expensive, but I would stay again.

We ate in the restaurant several times and enjoyed all our meals, very well prepared and breakfast was good. Toys and books for little kids was a bonus and meant they could play whilst adults had some food or relaxed in the room.

Like other reviewers, I'm surprised by the low rating of this hotel, it was a standout hotel from all of the ones we have stayed at so far. It isn't a five star hotel, but it more than makes up for it in service and location.

Location - We didn't bother to check what time buses finish in Grindlewald, if we had we wouldn't have hauled our luggage up the snowy ski slope in the dark - and if we had called the hotel we would have realised that the complementary shuttle bus would have taken us right to the front door, the same way the ski slopes do during the day, and the same way the bus does every hour on weekends. It wasn't in the middle of town, but there is no issue with the location of this little gem, the views of the north face of the Eiger were amazing from our room!

Service - impecabble service from the entire team here, we were greeted at the front door by the owner who gave me a beer when we got to our room at midnight after the train trip from Zurich was late..! No need for paperwork right away. Ski passes were available at reception, tables were set aside for dinner and breakfast (the food was great and we had no need to go anywhere else while we were there - simple breakfast, tasty lunch, and the in house chef did an exceptional job with dinner). Management let us check out after skiing on the last day and this gave us a chance for a shower before we left.

The room was simple and clean, and didn't leave anything to be desired. It is three stars at the moment, but talking with the owner at checkout the renovations that are taking place are due to be finished this summer and I think plans are to have this change. That wouldn't have influenced our decision to stay again though, the location and the customer service of the staff more than made up for the simple decor.

We will definitely be back next next ski season for another visit - its not easy to find a place like this one (one worth visiting again and again).

Right on the ski slopes leading down to Grindelwald, this hotel was a wonderful choice for our weekend escapade because 1) of its location 2) it had a room available, 2) we liked the look of it 3) the price was reasonable and 4) it promised good food! And we weren't disappointed at all, quite to the contrary. The evening meal was just delicious, gourmet standards - and upon our enquiry, we were told that the young chef is German. The room we had was a corner room overlooking the Eiger and the valley, spectacular! The breakfast was equally satisfying with all the standard cheese and cold meats selection as well as cereals and muesli bars and fresh fruit salad. They are building flats right next door so I don't know how this will change the intimate atmosphere of the place. I hope not.

Room Tip: Room 16 was lovely

Very comfortable room w/ flat screen TV and very comfy sheets.
Welcoming staff - we could not find the hotel on the Friday night, at 2a.m. in the middle of torrential rain. Called the hotel and the staff was most helpful, trying to help us find our way.
Breakfast - average
Internet - fast computer connection on first floor
View - absolutely breathtaking
Hikes - only a couple of hours to Eiger trail. Perfect location for hiking.
