“Service, atmosphere, location are great”
Reviewed 14 July 2012

We stayed here in June for a short family vacation. Had plans of making hiking trips during the days, so thought the half board option would be nice and easy - kids wouldn't want to go anywhere after a long day anyways. Next time I would reconsider it... The food was not great. But breakfast was really nice, the views are breathtaking and the service is really great, tending to all the needs and considering each guest individually. Ww had great recommendations on where to go, and were able to purchase train and bus tickets at the reception (the buses and the train leave at 2 min walk from the hotel). The hotel was quite empty, so we had the spa to ourselves in the evenings - bliss for aching legs!

Arriving by car, we were immediately impressed by the ample free parking (charge if undercover); equally impressive was the welcome from Alexander. When he showed us to our room (number 217), the view from the windows and balcony was absolutely breathtaking. In fact the Eiger almost seemed within touching distance. The room itself was large, light and airy, extremely comfortably furnished and a pleasure to stay in. The hotel is in a great location for the railway and bus stations and a short walk to the principal village amenities. However, due to its slightly elevated position there was no intrusive noise (the trains are electric). Levels of cleanliness were excellent. The fact that this is a family run hotel (third generation) was very apparent from the warmth and friendliness of the service. The owners and staff are multi-lingual, with an excellent local knowledge; nothing was too much trouble. One tip, try the Swiss wines with your meal, what a revelation - they are so good, it's no wonder they keep them for themselves!
Fell in love with Switzerland, fell in love with this hotel and will be going back next year.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front of the hotel have stunning views of the Eiger and surrounding mountains

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Caprice for one night in March on for a ski weekend.

The hotel is very traditional in appearance - very homely and welcoming (it felt like a family run hotel but I don't know if it actually is or not). Comfortable reception/lounge area - when we returned one evening there was a family playing cards, relaxing with a night cap - and that for me sums up the relaxed atmosphere of the Caprice.

Room - really good size (large double bed and a lounge area with sofa and coffee table), very clean, light and airy, good sized wardrobe and drawer storage. Bathroom was a little dated but perfectly fine - and the shower was fantasticly hot (better than most) - just what's required after a long day on the slopes!

Service/staff - the staff were excellent - very friendly, accommodating and helpful, with valued local knowledge. Couldn't have asked for more. Would return on basis of staff alone.

Amenities - as our stay was short we didnt have time to explore everything the hotel had on offer. We were on a ski weekend so somewhere to store skis/snowboards etc was a necessity - the hotel had ample room and a good boot room.
The hotel has a restuarant and a very reasonably priced evening meal offer - we ventured out and so didnt experience this but would do if we returned for a longer stay. Breakfast was great -the hotel had picked up on us mentioning we were here for my boyfriend's birthday weekend skiing and for breakfast on his birthday had decorated our breakfast table beautifully and all the staff came over individually and wished him a happy birthday. The breakfast itself was great with plenty of choice.
I understand there is also a spa area, or certainly somewhere one can have a massage etc but we didnt get chance to explore this.

Location - good, very short walk up the hill from Grindelwald train station, 10 mins walk to the gondola.

I would usually opt for a contemporary, boutique-style hotel. The Caprice is not, and would never want to be, such a hotel. What it is, however, is welcoming, homely, traditional and comfortable, everything you would want from a mountain-side retreat. It is difficult to describe but it has a certain charm and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay - would definitely stay again - either for ski trip or summer trip.

ps for anyone interested in the skiing, we were there the weekend of the ski world cup in March 2012. The Caprice was still very resonably priced and the skiing in the grindelwald area was excellent - will definitely return next season.

Absolutely recommendable! We used a SmartBox voucher here. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. The hotel is located very centrally - 5 minutes from the main road, but nevertheless quiet. Absolutely recommendable!

In desperate need of some peace and quiet away from the usual pressures of everyday life I headed off to Switzerland for a short break in the Alps. I had pre-booked my accomodation at the Caprice having read several reviews from previous guests the bulk of which appeared very complimentary. I was not dissappointed.
The welcome that I recieved from Alex, his wife and their staff was warm and genuine. They instantly made me feel at home and nothing was too much bother for them. The location of the hotel is superb. Being far enough away from the main thoroughfares of Grindelwald unyet within easy walking of the nearby train & bus stations allowing for hassle-free transport connections. Meals are served in the first floor restaurant with the most incredible views of the Eiger as it dominates the near horizon and the wonderful alpine valley below.
As someone with a healthy appetite my stay at the Caprice was made all the more pleasurable by the fact that food options at both the buffet-breakfast and during the `set` evening meal were more than adequate.
A full breakfast buffet (continental style) was served each morning with the usual fine selection of fresh fruits, cereals, bread, boiled eggs, cheese and a platter of cold meats on offer. A miriad selection of herbal teas, fruit juice and fresh brewed coffee was also available and all served with courtesy and a friendly smile.
In the evening the hotel provides guests with the option of eating in the restaurant rather than `searching` for food in downtown Grindelwald. For ease I decided to accept this option and I am glad I did. A set 5 course dinner was served with a vegetarian option also available. Again a fine selection of wholesome food wonderfully prepared & presented. At the Caprice you will never go hungery.
As a single guest I was accomodated in one of the rooms on the ground floor of the hotel with amazing views across the valley to the Eiger. The patio door of my room opened right out onto the pretty little garden (south facing) where I was able to sit and enjoy the last rites of the late afternoon sunshine from the comfort of a selection of sun-loungers and deck chairs, all to the accompanyment of distant cow bells.
The room itself was more than adequate. A fully functional bathroom ensuite. A comfortable double bed with crisp white linen to compliment the fresh pine clad interior decor. Cleanliness at this hotel is most definately not an issue. My room was cleaned every day and upon arrival little touches such as a small selection of local chocolates on the pillow confirmed an `attention to detail` which from my experience would seem to be the mantra of Alex and his staff.
Other facilities at the Caprice includes a wonderful spa area with jaccuzi, steamroom and suana. Most welcoming after a long day traversing the many hiking trails in the valley. A cosy snug/bar area close to the main reception offered an opportunity to meet guests from across europe. Do try the Kirsche if you get the chance. A wonderfully smooth nitecap available from the bar. A sound nights sleep is gauranteed.
The next day Alex will assist you in planning your days events. he is very much a local and understands the weather patterns and knows many of the hiking, biking and climbing trails on offer to outdoor enthusiasts. But if you just want to kick back and enjoy the peace and tranquility of Grindelwald, Alex will also have some suggestions for you.
The Caprice is truely a little gem in an area literally teeming with various accomodation options. I am not prone to writing hotel reviews but have taken the trouble on this occasion because I honestly believe that the success of this Hotel is down to the hard work and personal service that each guest is afforded by Alex and the team. This is a family run hotel with a great tradition and which operates successfully in a very competitive market. It is plain to see why this hotel has proved so popular amongst its guests and I would have no qualms in recommending it to anybody wishing to get away from it all for a while. I am already planning a return....

We stayed at Caprice for four nights on our European road trip and found it to be perfect for our needs. It was clean, welcoming and all the staff were friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is great being close to the train station, but still very peaceful, and the views from our room and the restaurant were stunning. With so much to do in and around Grindelwald, we're certainly looking forward to returning to Caprice in the future.
