Metropole Hotel Interlaken
Ranked #6 of 39 Hotels in Interlaken
Reviewed 1 July 2012

We spent two nights at the Metropole prior to a river cruise on the Rhine and Moselle, as part of a package. Having passed through Interlaken on a previous holiday, it was this stay which helped us to choose this particular trip.
Having only seen the outside of the hotel before, we were disappointed at finding that the Metropole was to be our base - it looked so incongruous in such a picturesque town. However, once inside,we were impressed by the eleganct ambience. Our room was on the fourth floor - easily accessible by lift. On entering, we were enraptured by the view from the balcony - a mountain and town panorama!
We were very impressed by the large room, with a sitting area near the balcony. The bathroom was super, and the bed blissfully comfortable.
On our first night we dined in the hotel's restaurant from a set but delicious menu, which was included in the cost of our holiday. However, for our second evening, the hotel restaurant's prices merited investigation of the competition, and so we ate at the Hotel Interlaken.
Breakfast at the Metropole consisted of a comprehensive and well-laid-out buffet, with something for everyone.
Throughout our stay, the hotel staff were the epitome of courtesy and helpfulness. We look forward to returning one day.

Room Tip: The front rooms have the stupendous mountain views - the higher the better!

Dear rocca52

Thank you very much for taking time and report your experience with the hotel Metropole. Once again, such comments are motivating us.

Well, you are right, from the outside we might are not the best looking hotel but it is the inside that really counts. And being the only high rise building in town, facing the Jungfrau, you couldn't have a better view from your room...

We all are looking forward to welcoming you the next time you are in Interlaken - we then again will give our best for you to feel comfortable!

Warm regards

We had booked for 2 nights in Hotel Metropole Interlaken. Very Close to Interlaken West Station. Right in the city centre. Lots of places to eat and shop around. The Rooms were excellent, the service was amazing and the breakfast had the best variety amongst all the other hotels we stayed in. Amazing view of the Jungfrau from the room. right from the check in to the check out, everything was taken care of.

Well of course, it IS an ugly building, but who knows? It might have been the height of cool in the early '70s. We have stayed in Interlaken 3 times, the first time in a smaller hotel even nearer to the town. We were on honeymoon, and even under that circumstance we found our small 'attractive' hotel accommodation dire. Alternatives seemed to be unaffordable, except for the concrete tower. So on our second visit we booked into the Metropole, and couldn't believe our good luck. The rooms are spacious, the beds comfortable, the staff impeccable, and the views breathtaking. The food is perfectly acceptable, and the location ideal. The only small disappointment (which, in light of the reasonable cost, is one we were happy to accept) is the bathroom. It was small and quite cramped, with not much room to place toiletries, and only a small shower (no bath). That being said, in 2011 when we were planning a third trip to Interlaken and discovered that the Metropole had no vacancies at the required time, we delayed our visit for a year in order to take advantage of the affordable delight that is the Metropole. On this third visit we had a room on the 14th floor which thrilled us. Although, to be honest, I can say from experience that the views towards the mountains are just as spectacular from the third floor (I've not seen them from the first or second). Unless you're incredibly wealthy,or working to strange criteria, then taking everything into account the Metropole surely must be the best place to stay in Interlaken.

Great views and location to the Jungfrau, Lauterbrunnen, Thunersee, and Brienersee. Good size rooms with balconies overlooking the town and beautiful landscapes. The hotel staff, lobby, pool were above average and certainly more modern than other hotels in Interlaken. But the room decor, furniture, carpets are showing age. This place is very clean and maintained, however. Overall, it is a so-so value - wi-fi extra, parking extra, rooms a bit pricey to start. We drove but i understand the buses & trains run with sufficient frequency to accommodate most schedules. Driving can be tricky, even in the summer, if accessing the Interlaken area via one of the passes (Susten or Grimsel). If pays to do some road trip research & planning here.

Room Tip: Not sure all rooms have balconies but if you get one you can score some views.

A quality hotel in a central location providing 4 star comfort. The upper floors afford an excellent view over this delightful town, and out to the surrounding mountains. You feel like you're up in the clouds! The hotel is fantastic and the staff very helpful. Only 5 minutes walk to the station.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor, I think they all have a balcony

Dear Guest

Thank you very much for your kind rating! Such comments are encouraging for all our staff.

Due to the fact that the hotel Metropole is the only high rise building in town and most centrally located, you have the best view in town. Out of the 96 rooms we do have 84 rooms facing the Jungfrau. The standard rooms (42 in total) are located from the 3rd to the 9th floor, while the deluxe rooms (54 incl. 2 Suites in total) are located from the 10th to the 17th floor.

We are looking forward to welcoming you next time you are spending your holidays in Interlaken!

Best regards

The best place to avoid the ugly tower that is the Metropole Interlaken is inside the hotel itself. Once inside the second of the double doors one is in a world of old-fashioned good taste in a modern setting. The atrium bar (with its elegant white grand piano) is a bit close to the front door but the barman is friendly and knowledgeable and there are comfy armchairs in which to sit nibbling the superb nut selection offered with one's drink - if one prefers not to perch on a bar-stool. Switzerland is so expensive that all prices are frightening (15 Swiss francs for a Dry Martini) but that is not the fault of the hotel. The staff are clearly very highly trained but extremely friendly and attentive. The barman impressed us by remembering my husband's preferred variation of his Negroni recipe!
Our room was comfortable and we were pleased to see that there were two chairs inside as well as two on the small balcony outside with its glorious view of the Jungfrau. There is nothing more annoying than a room for two people with only one chair. Apparently every room has a similar view which is itself a reason for choosing the hotel. We were on a Great Rail Journeys tour so evening meals were provided in the hotel most evenings and the standard of cooking in the main restaurant was very good indeed. The top-floor bar and restaurant, despite better views, were not so good - and much more limited in choice - but the manager told us they are trying to improve the kitchen facilities there which will allow greater variety..
We would certainly recommend the hotel both for its excellent central location - the bus from Interlaken Ost stops outside and it is only five minutes walk to the West station - and for the friendliness of the staff. One of our fellow guests has been returning once or twice a year for the past quarter century.
