“The Views and Garden Are Great But....”
Reviewed 20 September 2013

I had long seen this lovely, old, stately looking hotel over the years of being in the area and finally decided to give it a try. First, the location in town and for the surrounding areas is perfect. Close to the train station, access to roadways and wonderfully in the town center. And, the room we had provided a sitting balcony overlooking the gardens and the mountains. But, otherwise this hotel is only average or disappointing. The hotel itself seems mainly geared to tour groups and not individual travelers which, in my experience, always changes the mood and sensibility of a hotel. But, that aside, while access is free in 2 public areas, this hotel charges almost $10 per half hour for use of WiFi in the privacy of your room. That makes those public areas feel like a library or hostel. I cannot recall the last time any hotel, let alone a 4 star hotel, charged for in room technology connections. But that aside, on arrival, inadequate and frayed towels were in the room and on another day no maid service was provided and when we mentioned the difference of firmness (one was very bowed in the middle!) in the side by side mattresses that made up the double bed, they replaced one of them with a mattress of different thickness than the remaining one, making sleeping together virtually impossible. Here's the most troubling thing: in the elevator there is a sign asking guests to please tell the management of any issues. When I did so in my most polite way, not even so much as an apology was offered for any inconvenience. In fact, we were given excuses and explanations but not one word of "thank you" or "we're sorry for any inconvenience." That, to me, was the most troubling of issues with this hotel. Oh, and no amenities whatsoever in the bathroom except the 3 in 1 containers offering all in one soap, shampoo and body wash. We were told amenities only come with "superior rooms." At these prices, that seems impossible.

Room Tip: One on the backside with a balcony.

We recently stayed in this hotel and were a little disappointed with the reception and the lack of wi-fi. The rooms were a little dated and the bathroom had chipped floor tiles.....certainly not the standard one would expect of a 4 star hotel.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room on the non-street side, otherwise if you want the windowopen, you will hav...

This hotel has clearly had an elegant past and is making a valiant attempt to maintain this elegance. Our room was surprisingly modern although there was a slight lack of privacy in the stylishly equipped bathroom with the shortened glass door. The reception rooms were slightly faded turn of the century decor. Service was a little erratic: the receptionist greeting us had only limited English and this created a little confusion and the waiting staff did look under pressure at times when they had to cope with an influx of coach parties. We had half board for our two night stay and the food was OK but if I were staying longer then I think I would have started to look elsewhere.

We stayed at this hotel in July, as part of a group half board. The downstairs part of the hotel was beautiful, and is is very elegant. The rooms are large and very clean. They are lived in so have a few knocks around the edges but that didn't worry us. We had fabulous views across to the mountains. What spoit our stay was the quality of the food, especially the evening meal. Breakfasts were fine. In the evening we had buffet style meals and some of the food quite frankly was awful. That was such a shame as it stops the hotel being top dog in Meiringen. If the quality of food was sorted out it would be perfect. The hotel is only two minutes from the train station, shops and restaurants.

We stayed here a couple of years and liked the place, but when we came back this year the hotel was receiving one coach load after another of various East Asian tourists, many of whom did not know how to behave well. This has put us off ever coming back here again, as has the lack of Wi-Fi in the rooms.
This hotel used to be great but it is now fading due to having to use any means possible to stay in business. However, the staff were great, and yes the rooms are large

Stayed with a group of people on tour for seven nights, half board. The hotel is in a perfect position with the train station just over the road, shops and places to eat nearby. It is comfortable, a little old fashioned, with lovely gardens. The breakfasts were very good with plenty of choice, the evening meals were only OK! But did get better as the week went on. The weather was very hot, in the nineties and would have been perfect if there had been a swimming pool in the grounds, there is a public outdoor pool a fifteen minute walk there and back, hardly worth going as would have been exhausted by the time we got back as it was so gloriously hot! Next door there is a restaurant which is part of the hotel very disappointing, expensive and not very much choice. The Manager, his wife, dog and staff were all charming and made our stay happy and comfortable and the holiday a great success!

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a walking holiday. The hotel is well situated right next to the train station and quite near to cable cars/lifts etc.

It is a large and old hotel, decorated in a very beautiful French style. The building and grounds were beautiful. Our rooms were also lovely and clean too but really, really modern! They were large and beautifully decorated but strange contrast with the halls and hotel common areas.

At the reception area staff were lovely and friendly but slightly clueless (group of teens). They blithely announced they had forgotten to take the bags up so just handed them over to us (they were being transferred between hotels) and we struggled to get them in the antiquated lift.

The dining room was where the real let downs happened. The waitress (appeared to be one main waitress and several drinks waiters/plate removers) was initially very friendly, stating that 'of course' they could deal with my mothers dietary requirements (gluten free, hotel was warned months before at time of booking and at our arrival too). The menu was several courses, but no choices offered (side note: there are actually choices given for main... but no one told us...).

We thought the menu looked good, however when the food arrived my mother had been given completely different food, with no explanation that this would be different (would have been fine if they had taken us through the menu and explained). Staff spoke excellent English so this was not the problem. Instead of (lovely) creamed spinach and prawn soup she got beef bullion (essentially stock cubes) and then no sauce at all with dry pork for main (they offered tomato sauce that was just tomatoes). If a hotel is making food through a chef they should find it easy to create sauce with no flour. Waitress attitude towards our unhappiness about this was also not ideal, though she was not impolite, more seemed 'surprised' that we were unhappy.

Second night was better- my father had a specific talk with waitress before meal to work out what my mother could have. Result was that she had almost the exact same menu, however again the differences were not explained, we were told conflicting information (once that the dessert was fine, once that it wasn't and she'd get something different- she got the same and it was fine) and the waitress challenged my father 'did you even warn the hotel about the diet?!' 1) yes, numerous times and 2) its an allergy not just a diet.

At this second meal there was also confusion as half board guests had food, including the salad course served to them whilst a tour group were eating from a buffet (but same dishes). No one informed us if we were meant to be eating from the buffet or not, and we saw other half board guests accidentally do so. This meal was also randomly served outside. No reason or warning given and some other guests seemed unhappy about this. We were fine, it was a nice night.

At this meal we also saw the manager speak to the (railway) tour group, to each table. He seemed very friendly and funny however he made no effort to speak to any guests not with the tour group. There were only 3 other tables so it would have taken little time to greet the others too.

Room Tip: There are several 'styles' of room so look up which one you'd like and request.
