“Great rail journey”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

I stayed at this hotel for a week as part of a "Great rail journey" and it was excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms large and comfortable and the food was very good. What more can one say? I enjoyed my whole holiday enormously and it was made more interesting with the connection between Meiringen and Sherlock Holmes! Not to mention their favourite "invention" the meringue !! Needless to say the scenery was stunning. Highly recommended.

We stayed here for three nights as part of a Switzerland coach tour. The hotel is well situated in the centre of Meiringen, close to all the amenities and sights. It looks impressive from the outside; and in an old fashioned way is equally impressive on the inside - lots of chandeliers and antique furniture. Our room must have been a family suite - two bedrooms, kitchen/living room plus bathroom. It was clean and comfortable. Right at the top of the hotel reached by the creaking old lift! All our meals were buffet. Breakfast was adequate; and included bacon but no egg. Dinner always had a choice of meat and fish, with plenty of added vegetables. Michael Portillo supposedly stayed at this hotel as part of his Great European Railways tour, but given the food arrangements and certain other aspects we doubt he would have stayed here??!!

The stay at this hotel was part of the tour I was on. Although nicely situated this hotel was ,dark , dingy & had horrid decor. Bedroom was very large. no carpet. Curtain hanging off the rail, & not wide enough to close across the large window.Lighting in bedroom & bathroom was abysmal. Not enough choice of food especially evening meal, which was mostly tasteless. Potatoes often under cooked. Only 1 choice of sweet. Very slow service. Not what I expected of a 4 Star Hotel , would not like to ever stay here again.

Room Tip: always req a quiet room & hopefully curtains that fully close .

I had long seen this lovely, old, stately looking hotel over the years of being in the area and finally decided to give it a try. First, the location in town and for the surrounding areas is perfect. Close to the train station, access to roadways and wonderfully in the town center. And, the room we had provided a sitting balcony overlooking the gardens and the mountains. But, otherwise this hotel is only average or disappointing. The hotel itself seems mainly geared to tour groups and not individual travelers which, in my experience, always changes the mood and sensibility of a hotel. But, that aside, while access is free in 2 public areas, this hotel charges almost $10 per half hour for use of WiFi in the privacy of your room. That makes those public areas feel like a library or hostel. I cannot recall the last time any hotel, let alone a 4 star hotel, charged for in room technology connections. But that aside, on arrival, inadequate and frayed towels were in the room and on another day no maid service was provided and when we mentioned the difference of firmness (one was very bowed in the middle!) in the side by side mattresses that made up the double bed, they replaced one of them with a mattress of different thickness than the remaining one, making sleeping together virtually impossible. Here's the most troubling thing: in the elevator there is a sign asking guests to please tell the management of any issues. When I did so in my most polite way, not even so much as an apology was offered for any inconvenience. In fact, we were given excuses and explanations but not one word of "thank you" or "we're sorry for any inconvenience." That, to me, was the most troubling of issues with this hotel. Oh, and no amenities whatsoever in the bathroom except the 3 in 1 containers offering all in one soap, shampoo and body wash. We were told amenities only come with "superior rooms." At these prices, that seems impossible.

Room Tip: One on the backside with a balcony.

We recently stayed in this hotel and were a little disappointed with the reception and the lack of wi-fi. The rooms were a little dated and the bathroom had chipped floor tiles.....certainly not the standard one would expect of a 4 star hotel.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room on the non-street side, otherwise if you want the windowopen, you will hav...

This hotel has clearly had an elegant past and is making a valiant attempt to maintain this elegance. Our room was surprisingly modern although there was a slight lack of privacy in the stylishly equipped bathroom with the shortened glass door. The reception rooms were slightly faded turn of the century decor. Service was a little erratic: the receptionist greeting us had only limited English and this created a little confusion and the waiting staff did look under pressure at times when they had to cope with an influx of coach parties. We had half board for our two night stay and the food was OK but if I were staying longer then I think I would have started to look elsewhere.

We stayed at this hotel in July, as part of a group half board. The downstairs part of the hotel was beautiful, and is is very elegant. The rooms are large and very clean. They are lived in so have a few knocks around the edges but that didn't worry us. We had fabulous views across to the mountains. What spoit our stay was the quality of the food, especially the evening meal. Breakfasts were fine. In the evening we had buffet style meals and some of the food quite frankly was awful. That was such a shame as it stops the hotel being top dog in Meiringen. If the quality of food was sorted out it would be perfect. The hotel is only two minutes from the train station, shops and restaurants.
