We used to stay here a while ago when the hotel was with its previous owners so we were keen to see what it was like now. We booked eight days stay over Christmas in a family room as we two children aged 5 and 8.
The owners were very friendly in their e mails to us prior to the visit, offered to collect us from the station and organised our lift passes. They also helped with information about ski hire.
When we phoned from the station we were greeted with enthusiasm and my husband and children were droppped off at the ski hire shop.
The staff at the hotel were obviously very happy in their work. Our room was clean with a double bed for us and lovely bunk bed for the children. The balcony gave a view over the town.
There is a games room and table tennis room for the children and there was a good mix of families from all over Europe staying. There is also a pool and sauna upstairs.
The bathroom was very clean and modern with a roomy shower. There was plenty of wardrobe space too.
The food was excellent and the children had a good menu, not just fried stuff and chips. They were willing to try a good variety of food, probably better than they do at home. Our waiting staff were kind and attentive. In the past this hotel had a varied track record with food (depending who was cooking that night) and the improvement is great !
On Christmas Eve St Nicholas came to visit with his donkeys and we all gathered together to sing Stille Nacht. It was also Trychelwoche while we were there, a folk end of year tradition in the Hasliberg involving costumes and very large cow bells.
The hotel is just a short walk from the cable car up to the ski area where there is a brilliant ski school with the most interesting kids programme, and it is also a short walk from the town centre and station. As regards the location it is great for both summer and winter activities.
I can honestly say that it was more like staying with family. We felt so very welcome ! Please see my pictures (not great quality but they give an idea of what it is like !).

The hotel is well located in this small city. From my room, chosen arbitrarily, I had a view of the mountains and the falls which we visited later. While suddenly, the night was quite warm, the room heating continued and put us in a bit of discomfort. We had to open a window to make the room comfortable. No service for this purpose was availablwe at night.Breakfast was just adequate. A walk around from this hotel is very refreshing. We dined in a nearby restaurant at affordable prices.

Room Tip: Take one with a view of the falls.

We spent 10 days at this hotel and as we booked through Kuoni we were allocated ‘superior’ rooms. These were very well appointed with modern en-suite facilities (shower, no bath) and were kept nice and clean. The good news end there because, as previous reviewers have indicated, the food is dire. For example, one night we had the choice of chicken curry or fruit curry. If you don’t like curry then too bad. Each night the main dish alternated between chicken and pork, and you had to choose your meal for the following evening. It wasn’t until our group started complaining that the hotel mentioned that we could have fish or an omelette. The quality, and sometimes quantity, of the food was very poor. Once, dessert was just a dollop of ‘angel delight’ accompanied by a dash of squirted cream. The set menu was translated from German into English, but the waiters struggled to explain what any item was and sometimes it would remain a mystery until the dish actually arrived. The salad buffet was lacklustre and when items ran out they were not replenished. I could go on about how bad the service and food was, but suffice it to say that I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anybody (unless you eat out).

This nice hotel is situated in an ideal part of Meiringen with many of the rooms facing a mountainous view. The rooms were clean, comfortable and beautifully furnished but not particularly large.
Everthing in the hotel comes with a heavy price tag; the internet, water during dinner (CHF8.50) and even a slice of butter.
The quality of the food is average. Portions are more suitable for 5-8 year-olds rather than grown adults.
The nightmare starts with the soup (never fresh), more or less a half-empty cappuccino-sized bowl, definitely not more than 10 tablespoons in all.
The main course is incredibly small, often filling just 1/3 of the plate or less. When the soup was provided, there were no salads at meal times. On other occasions when there were salads, the empty bowls were not refilled when emptied. Bread at the table was always consumed because there was not much more to eat.
Customers who complained were told that there was no more food. Some searched for another restaurant after dinner.
Don't eat there unless you're on a diet.

Reception closes at 9.00pm and no calls can be received after this time.

This hotel has great potential if managed properly but with the alarming appreciation of the Swiss Franc, inflated prices and this type of service we were glad to be back home when it was over.

Room Tip: Insist on a room facing the mountains

Room awful - smelling of diesel, food inedible and staff totally unmotivated.

We walked for 6 hours from Grindelwald to Meringen and found the Sherlock Holmes Hotel. We checked in and were shown a room very low in the hotel which was reached by going down steps behind reception. The whole corridor and area smelt of diesel, the room was very basic with a very small bathroom containing a shower (no bath), there was no mini bar or tea making facilities. The standard was very poor compared to the Sunstar Hotels. All we wanted to do was relax with a hot drink and take a bath after our long walk!

We then went down to dinner. We waited for a long time to be served and the menu started with soup and a salad buffet. This buffet was virtually empty with only a couple of leaves left and some cold pasta. We then waited for the main meal which we had chosen and were happy that the menu did indeed have a vegetarian option. However when the food arrived it was awful. The vegetarian option was supposed to be hot potatoes with cheese however the food was completely cold. We complained and were told that it was supposed to be cold; when we pointed out that the menu actually described the meal as hot we were told that this was a typing mistake by the receptionist! They took the food back to be heated up but it returned on a hot plate but the food still cold – completely inedible. The same potatoes were served with the meat option so again inedible. We had waited for a long time for the meal and the waitress had clearly been outside smoking as she stank of cigarette smoke.

We slept and the next morning came down to breakfast. We had to ask for cups, plates, hot water...... the list goes on. Again the buffet was almost empty so we had to ask for things to be filled up but the selection was very disappointing after the Sunstar with no cooked selection (apart from hard boiled eggs) and no pastries of any kind. The staff were totally unhelpful and appeared de-motivated.

The hotel was quite nice, in a fairly modern style, with rooms which were clean and functional. I don't think it was anything really special, but it was a perfectly good hotel. We only stayed for 2 nights, which was fine, I don't think that I would like to have spent a whole hoilday there, it was just a bit basic. Food quality was very mixed, some very good (a lovely home made lasagne), some poor and some a bit odd! Breakfast was OK, but only a fairly limited cold buffet, anything warm was extra. The restaurant/dining room could have been very much improved. The tables were set out in rows, each separated by some plastic foliage, which gave it a bit of a "canteen" feel. Service at dinner was however very good. I wouldn't return to this hotel, but that isn't to say that there was anything wrong with it, it just isn't the style that I enjoy.
