“Great Views, But Beware Noise”
Reviewed 1 July 2008

My family recently stayed in Wengen at the Edelweiss. When booking directly with the hotel, I was given the choice of a big family room with no balcony or 2 connecting rooms with balcony. We took the 2 rooms and their much better views.

The property is a short but steep walk (like everything in Wengen) below the train station right next to the Baeren. The hotel is aging, but the rooms were very clean and comfortable.

The problem with our stay was noise. The property is indeed family friendly, and unfortunately a trampoline just outside the front door was in use until well after dark virtually EVERY minute of every day we were there. Creak, creak, scream, creak.... you get the picture. It tended to diminish the wonderful alpine solitude you go to Wengen to enjoy.

Another problem with noise came from the aging balcony/deck construction. You can plan on hearing every movement anyone makes above or below you on these wooden decks. Worse for us, were several couples travelling together who insisted on moving their plastic chairs every 30 seconds while out on the deck.

The proprietors are very nice and the breakfast was good but nothing special for Switzerland. There is also ping pong and foozball in a dark and dingy basement room adjacent to the obligatory Swiss bomb shelter room. Amusing, but I wouldn't call it friendly. Our 11 year old found it funny.

All in all, we had a good stay at the Edeweiss, but may well look elsewhere next time in Wengen.

We have stayed over many years, always for skiing... unfortunately our family are growing up now. So we didn't return last year, but hope to return next.
Charming owners... husband is the cook and photographer (weekly slide show); wife handles reservations; daugher is general dogsbody. Very genuine people, although retiring.
Clean & quiet. Good value. Comfortable chalet pine style rooms.
Good wholesome home food (not spectacular cuisine).
Clientele is almost wholly Swiss German... either families or older people when we were there. I don't think the owners speak languages, other than a smattering of French and English.
The hotel is part of the VCH.ch network... hotels of a Christian inspiration. There is often a pastor in residence, ... may lead occasional prayers, talks, walks, etc. These are generally shy and retiring people.
About 2 minutes walk down from the train station, down a steepish path. Else 3 minutes down the main road. Count longer if ski boots on.
You can return very close to the hotel on skis.. this is just about possible if enough snow (has been possible most years in February). Need to cut off left main piste back to Wengen over some 500m, crossing one tiny road. Typically a bit icy and patchy, so you need to be able to ski half decently.
You may have to pay extra for coffee after meal, unless you take the "4 course" meal option. No smoking, and no bar, but wine can be served at meals.

We stayed in June 07. The family rooms for 4 were quite large with bunk beds. The rooms with mountain view provided balconies with beautiful views of the Eiger, Monch and Junfrau. Rooms were clean. Breakfast was typical with cereal, chesses, meat, and breads. Fairly easy walk from the train station.

  • Liked — clean, reasonable rates
  • Disliked — no hotel transport to the station for luggage
