“A hidden gem”
Reviewed 17 June 2014 via mobile

We have just returned to the UK having spent 10 days in The Caprice.
From entering the front door we felt completely at home. The staff work as a well co-ordinated team treating each guest as an important individual.
The prime position in Wengen, looking straight onto the Jungfrau, obviously gives one a wonderful feeling and the hotel staff amplify this. The hidden gem description heading comes from the food. The 2 Dutch chefs really spoiled us with the very high standard of cooking - the very freshest food beautifully presented. This was up to the highest standards of the top London restaurants and quite unexpected in a holiday hotel.
We cannot wait to return and we recommend the Caprice highly.

We stayed here with 3 families last weekend. The hotel is just a 200 meter walk from the train station, which makes it very easy. We received a very warm welcome by the staff.
The room (we wbooked a junior suite) were spacious and clean. The view from the balcony (see picture) was beyond imagination. It looks right at the Jungfrau, it's just spectacular!
The staff was very professional and service oriented. We had dinner with 13 people (of which 7 were kids). They made the kids feel great and it helped to settle them down after an intensive hike in the mountains.
Breakfast the next day was nice too. We would come back her any time in the future.

Hint: if you book a room, try to get one on the south side. It's worth it!

There is a lot of things that we loved about our stay here. To start with location is great. Its literaly 2 minutes walking from the train station. Rooms are bright, and we had a beautifull view on the mountains. Staff is excellent, specifically Sanja in the restaurant, who were super helpfull, chearefull, and pleasant. Same for reception who offered all help. Their chef is great. He is very creative and offer daily menu that only competes with his previous day dish :-) . We were planning to try different restaurant in our second day, but we decided that we dont need to. So to make it simple, this is a recomended place. Its a bit expensive though , one area to improve!

The Caprice is a lovely hotel with the best staff anywhere who could run training courses for other hotels as a sideline. The hotel style is alpine but light and bright with a farrow and ball type colour palette, great lighting and a view of the Jungfrau that is worth whatever you have to pay for it.

Last year we loved the hotel and staff but were very unhappy with the food in the evenings; this year the food was quite simply stunning. I am really not a fan of alpine cuisine either at the high end or the sausage and potato end; it is something I put up with so my family can ski but I can honestly say that together with Carlos's pre-dinner cocktails, the food was a real highlight this time.

If you go make sure you book dinner as non-guests were literally clamouring for tables. Wengen is not a gourmet paradise!
Anna-Maria seems to have a real gift for hiring staff and Sonia, Justin and a very nice new lady did everything they could to make our holiday special as indeed did the lovely Carlos. So many hotels neglect this aspect and it is the most important element.

I have noticed a few comments on furnishings but can only say we liked the furnishings in our rooms: the Lauterbrunnen suite and the one next door but I haven't seen the other rooms.

We stayed recently at the Hotel Caprice for a week's skiing in Wengen and Grindelwald. The hotel is perfectly situated a few minutes stroll from the rail station which also provides access to the slopes at Kleine Scheidegg.

The room was pleasant with south facing aspect and from the balcony we enjoyed the views across the valley to Murren.

Fixtures and fittings all in good order and with a plentiful supply of hot water at all times it was easy to freshen up after a hard day's skiing on the slopes. I found the king bed a little short (I'm 1.96 m tall) but would suit most other people.

We ate breakfast each day in the restaurant and enjoyed the excellent choice and great service from Carlos and his colleague. Dinner menu's were also great and we ate a couple of times enjoying the very fine cooking and wine selections.

The hotel management were very friendly and offered helpful hints in how best to get around and where to go in Wengen. We also took advantage of the Caprice's arrangement with Central Sports to store ski's & boots overnight at the store, next to the Mannlichen cable car, which saved a wee bit of energy after a long day's skiing.

We loved our stay at the Caprice and will have no hesitation in returning in the future.

Room Tip: All the bedrooms I think are south facing, so no worries on views etc. I would however recommend a r...

We were upgraded to a suite on arrival which was a very large room with masses of storage and gorgeous view. The bathroom and furniture have, as other reviewers have commented, seen better days, but everything was comfortable and in perfect working order. Service level was very high and the food gourmet and superbly presented. We were on a half-board basis which meant dinner was the no-choice set menu, which is rather heavy on the red meat. On only one of our 4 night-stay was the set menu something we didn't particularly fancy and we switched to the a la carte menu with no difficulty (and the salmon gravadlax starter from that was one of the most delicious things I have eaten in a while). I rarely have puddings but the desserts here were irresistible. Switzerland is phenomenally expensive, but in that context the Caprice felt like reasonable value. It's easy to ski right back to the hotel and the walk down to the train or gondola short, although a bit treacherous on the sloping icy path. The wifi was ok and our only quibble was the lack of a cake with afternoon tea - essential in a ski hotel!

Wengen is beautiful and this Hotel Caprice is a perfect place to stay during your visit. We stayed in a south-facing spacious double room. Though the rooms could use a bit of an update (the furniture is well worn), the beds are comfortable and everything is clean. What sets the hotel apart is the friendly service and the desire to accommodate guests. We missed breakfast one day, but the kitchen still put together a full continental spread for us. Another night, we forgot to confirm for dinner - and the restaurant was full booked - no problem, an additional table was setup for us. I was slightly concerned as we were a bit removed from the main dinning area and did not want to be forgotten. That of course did not happen and we received excellent service all evening. Speaking of dinning, the restaurant is excellent, and for what it is (fine dining / 3 courses) it is reasonably priced. The location of the hotel is also great. I was concerned at first as it was only a few hundred yards from the train station and the tracks go directly in front of the the hotel. However, noise was never an issue and it made for an easy walk to catch the train up to the slopes.

Room Tip: the view from south facing rooms is worth it!
