Hotel Bernerhof & Residence
Ranked #19 of 20 Hotels in Wengen
Reviewed 15 May 2013

Looking for a room for 4 people in expensive Wengen looks to be an impossible task, until we found the lowest price offered by Residence Bernerhof. From the Wengen station, just walk the slope up then turn left and then walk to the end of the street with the giant cow on the roof. We were quite hesitant initially due to its relatively lower price, but this hotel turned out to be the most pleasant surprise of our trip.

Pros:-
1. Our room was on the Hotel Restaurant Residence which was just a few metres walk away form the cow fronted reception building. This spacious room have only one bedroom for 2 pax, thus they place 2 extra beds on the hall-dining area but still it does not feel cramped at all. They managed to fit in an LCD TV with 2 chairs, 2 single beds, the dining area and kitchenette in one room. The icing of the cake of course was the wonderful view of the Wengen church right outside the balcony.

2. The restaurant was not open during the off-season, but we were offered directions to the Ristorante Da Sina next door. The room provided was very spacious fully equipped with a kitchenette with cooking equipment, fridge and a microwave / toaster. Being off-season, this kitchenette is a godsend as Da Sina was the only one open and it is easy to buy groceries at COOP Lauterbrunnen to cook an inexpensive meal.

3. The friendly receptionist/waiter (who kind of looked like Jim Sturgess) was friendly and even though we were one of the few hotel guests travellers in this off-season, the breakfast spread was marvellous with cheese, meats, colored eggs, breakfast cereals, jam, bread, coffee and hot chocolate. Ready to tackle the cold temperatures ahead.

4. The toilet was a little snug but managed to fit in bathtub and showerhead with hot water and ample towels.

5. The teddy bear next to the microwave just made the room more cheerful and homely

Cons :-
1. Hotel Residence looks a bit dated but for the great price we paid and excellent room amenities, this is a very minor observation

I know where I will stay next time at Wengen. This is the first time that a lowly ranked hotel in Tripadvisor surprised me with the level of comfort and convenience. Don't judge the hotel with its Tripadvisor ranking!

Room Tip: Get the balcony room with view of the church. Room is spacious and fully equipped for cooking

I travelled around Switzerland with some girlfriend.s THis was the perfect place to stay for a night or two when wandering the village!!!! We were never in it except to sleep, so we can't really offer any opinion except it was comfy beds, clean and a great view of the mountains right out of our window!

The breakfast was so good! And everyone so friendly!

Me and my partner stayed at this hotel mid March 2013 and we had a brilliant stay. I read the reviews on trip advisor before we went and we couldn't understand why is has got such negative reviews. We stayed here 3years ago too and its as good now as it was then. The staff were helpful, breakfast was great-egg and soldiers, freshly baked bread, cooked meats, cheese, jams and cereal, there was an extensive choice and at evening meals also. The hotel is about 1 minutes walk to the slopes. The hotel could do with updating but its warm and clean. When we go back to Wengen we know where we will be staying!

After reading all the negative reviews on here, I felt I had to write my own personal thoughts on this hotel.
For a budget hotel I was thoroughly impressed. The hotel is quite old fashioned but so are most in traditional ski areas.
The bedrooms are a good size.with the most amazingly comfortable beds. The bathroom is small but it has everything you need. The shower works really well, with hot water night and day. (Something I haven't had in expensive hotels.) the views from all rooms wether front or back of hotel are breath taking. Also one of the best situated hotels in the village. Main gondola practically opposite and train station two minute walk away. The hotel staff collected our luggage on arrival and departure of the train station.
I've read in some reviews that the staff were rude? I found the staff very polite nice and friendly. Our waiter couldn't do enough for us. (Possibly the way you treat them reflex this.)
For what it costs to stay in this hotel, again I found the food fantastic. The breakfast buffet and 3 course evening meal was more than expectable..There was seven of us in our party and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals.
I personally feel that this hotel is excellent value for money and that the negative comments have been left by people who want five star service but not prepared to pay it.
We returned yesterday and have already decided we are booking again for next year.

We stayed as part of an Inghams holiday for one week and were very disappointed by the standard of accommodation. There was never anyone on the front desk, the staff were generally unhelpful and as part of the HB package you could go to the pizzeria next door but only on weekdays and a maximum of 2 or 3 tables of hotel guests were permitted so you had to take turns. The rooms are cramp and the bathroom is very basic with space at a premium. There is no lift and no porter available to help with your bags. If you are on the HB package there are no meals for children. The hotel is in a great location for the ski school and cable car with the railway 2 minutes walk away.

Went on a Crystal ski package as it provided best deal for HB with single room and easy doorstep access to town and ski lifts. Other large hotels in town are far superior but too expensive (almost double this).
Thought the room amenity wouldn't matter as hardly in it, but it wasn't good - especially the brown decor, tight size and thin walls so you hear everything to the sides. The worst thing though was the general ambience and depressing feel, not helped by being fairly empty in late January and no welcoming bar open late afternoon when you return from ski-ing, no heated boot room, no lifts, basic food and limited choice for dinner.
Some meals were very poor (especially that unheard of fish) but some surprisingly good soups and stews (veal/venison) and salad bar has a good choice of the usual stuff. Drinks as everywhere in town are just too expensive for us Brits - nearly £4 for a small beer. Breakfast was fine, with a nice chioice of cereals, yogurts, fresh fruit, boiled eggs, breads, jams, meats and cheese and decent enough tea/coffee.
The young staff are helpful but not a bundle of fun. However thank goodness it does attract some regular fun lovers trying to holiday on the cheap who made my stay enjoyable nonetheless, especially Dougie and Gail who I'll never forget! (Doe a deer,...!).
If you can afford better certainly go for it, but this is central, clean and bearable if you go open minded not expecting top cuisine and spacious modern rooms.

The price we paid for 2 people was just way to high for this type of establishment. It's more the feel of a back backers the. A hotel. Rooms are clean but you can hear every word your neighbor says next door. The beds are old, the pillow as flat as flat can be. The food in the restaurant is nothing special, the raclete chees had not much flavor. The breakfast buffet was nothing like any other Swiss hotels, after we complained about only one sort of bread they did put out some dark bread as well. Not coming back here, you can do better for the same price.
