“Gotta love that salad bar!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 August 2008

We had a great time at the Astoria, very friendly people and very good food! The 'at least 24 different items' salad bar (more like 30 when I counted) is fantastic ... when in the mountains, I expect to not get much veggies ... but here .. yum ... the sit down dinner food is also great as were the 2 theme nights: grilled meats and raqulette.

The rooms where nice, we were a tad disappointed that our 'nostalgia' 4 post bed did not look anything like the one in the picture on the website (instead wooden, it was a steel frame) .. but we slept very well in it.

The double jacuzzi is very nice after a long day of hiking, the fitness room was taken over by some tango class at the time, minor bummer.

Did I mention the salad bar ? I guess I have to post a picture!

Oh, we had one waitress who was obviously in training and messed a few things up .. but hey, we all start somewhere.

  • Liked — The Salad Bar!
  • Disliked — The price of wine in switzerland :) The fitness machines stuffed in the kids' playroom. Wifi not working initially.

Three of us enjoyed an excellent ,high season (UK half term) skiing . The snow was perfect and the sun shone for a week without a cloud in the sky.

We had plucked the Astoria out of the internet due mainly to the prompt , informative and friendly replies to our questions.

The whole experience was like Swiss clockwork,:the train connection from Zurich via Chur led onto the mountain railway and up to Arosa in 3 hrs.

The Hotel is traditional , founded in 1911 , but bang up to date in decor and facilities.
The rooms are compact ,yet many have balconies .Decor is simple , beds comfortable , all very clean. The fitness room and hottub / sauna are of 5 star standard.

Ollie and Edith work very hard , especially with the dining experience, which is renown in Arosa. The 5 course evening meal is a real treat.

Walk to the skilift, deposit your skis and boots, medium ski area , most suited to beginners/ intermediates/ lazy sunlovers.

Children are welcome and the hotel is part of Club Mickey , providing Ps2, Table football , games and toys. WIFI , TV Toboggans,

We would definately return to this well run and friendly hotel .

Price , good value

Downsides ...trying hard to think of one..probably most suitable for families and couples rather than stag weeks!

  • Liked — Friendly staff, food alpine charm.
  • Disliked — compact room...but adequate.

My husband, four year old daughter, and I spent a wonderful Christmas week at the Astoria.

We were greeted by name as we stepped out of our car, and the warm, personal service continued all week. At one point during the week the other family we were traveling with needed a doctor; the Astoria not only made the appointment for them but drove them there to make sure they found the office with no trouble.

We stayed in a family room, which gave our daughter her own "room" (you could shut a door between our beds and hers). There were also two balconies. It was spotlessly clean and had lots of space for hanging up our clothes.

Each morning we indulged in a hot breakfast buffet (a hot buffet is not easy to find). Each evening we were treated to a five course dinner... with a special kids meal. Each night there was a different "theme." The little girls in our group loved the midieval night and they got up and danced the evening a local ski instructor played his guitar and accordian.

The children also really enjoyed the play room. It gave them a place to escape while the adults finished their meals. It was far enough from the dining room that they could be loud, but not so far that we couldn't pop in to check on them. It was a perfect arrangement for everyone. (It is not supervised.)

The Astoria is a good location, just a couple of blocks from the shops and slopes. The only downside is that you have to lug your skis and gear each morning to the lift. You can rent a locker next to the information desk at the base of the lift; that way you can leave your skis, poles and boots there each evening. (Well worth the investment) Also, if you have a small child in ski school, the closest ski garden is rather small. We ended up moving our daughter to the school in Inner Arosa, which was a short bus ride away each morning.

If you go in winter, spend the money for a horse-drawn carriage ride. (Oliver and Edith can help book one if you need, they did for us.) It is worth every penny to ride up the mountain that way... just beautiful!

  • Liked — Extremely personal service.
  • Disliked — Would have preferred supervised play room, but it worked out well as it was.
