“How much are you willing to pay for a view?”
Reviewed 28 July 2010

If you are prepared to pay five star prices for a two star facility with an exceptional view then this place comes highly recommended. If you are well travelled, urbane, and have stayed in other hotels/chalets/motels/trailer parks/station platforms then you may not find this place appealing. The 19th Century sanatorium for the insane feel remains intact right down to the whiteness of the walls, peepholes in the doors, brusqueness of the staff, and remote location from which escape is only possible by funicular or skiing/sledging.

Davos is not a pedestrian-only town so the peace and quiet on offer at Schatzalp is far from pedestrian. On balance however the Spartan accommodation, mediocre food (half board is mandatory), and plain service could only appeal to those in search (need) of a genuine sanatorium experience circa 1800s.

If you like to be in a hotel, that makes you feel like 100 years back, then you will like this hotel. Otherwise, there is no confort for so much money. The furniture in the room is spartan, no Radio or TV (what is Internet?). The matresses had no support and the bathroom was tiny, the shower unusable. Service: none. Price: horrendous

We stayed at the Schatzalp for four days this August. The hotel has a stunning location high above Davos, and the view as the sun comes up or goes down is outstanding. The hotel is comfortable, the breakfast is rather good, and the hotel is well situated for an evening out in the town, once the funicular schedule is understood to be a part of the evening. Our room was on the south, or view side; any rooms on the other side will be facing the hill on which the hotel is situated, with a substantial reduction in the visual amenity.

On the negative side, the interior of the hotel is rather worn and shows its age, and the staff is rather thin on the ground and not always up to the task, though invariably polite.

We stayed at the hotel in August 2008. The website of the hotel should be read with care. Historical should be understood as seedy, with much of the (inner/outer) infrastructure either broken or in bad shape.
A large number of the staff of the hotel gives the impression that it is their first professional occupation. Furthermore, the level of service -either by staff or management- gives the impression of indifference. It reflects the care of the hotel that quests have to take care of their luggage from the cable train to the hotel. Not even a trolley is made available -regardless whether you booked the most expensive room or not. The room price is maximum CHF 200 a night/per person (incl. half-board).
The hotel is located at one of the best -if not the best- location of Davos. The views and the surroundings are breath-taking. Unfortunately, the hotel management is not fit for the job and challegence. The atmosphere at the hotel can be best described with a reference to the BBC sitcom "hi de hi" (about the fictitious holiday camp Maplins).
Here is a selection of some of our experiences: cold coffee at breakfast (explanation given: "yes we have some problems with the coffee machine"); very hard boiled eggs (it took two other turns for the cook to come up with a normal egg); glasses with cracks; wineglass with chips (lips cut), sauna too cold/shut off (although the reception was said before it is still running); unprofessional/too young staff in restaurant (unaware how to serve or solve problems); complaints by quests are answered with rancour by staff, staff apparently free to choose the tone (remarks) with which they reply quests; chaotic communication; tables not reserved for quests (as should be the case according the own policy of the hotel); a bidet watered to the top as welcome to your room (leacking tap); dinner closure before the ending according the hotel policy (09.00 pm); cleaning starts when the last quests are steal having dinner (changing of tables, candles put out, cleaning floor). I could continue this list almost endless.
Nevertheless, as soon as you leave the hotel and start hiking, you are able to have a terrific time. Certainly if you choose one of the 23 other hotel where you can dinner without paying extra (excl. drinks). This dine around is great fun -if locations are chosen well. The alpinium garden is illustrative for the hotel: once it must have been beautiful. Too bad, with a better management style this hotel could be a jewel. Whether the hotel will be able to reserve its charme will depend on the apparent construction of a high rise direct near the hotel -which illustrates much of the current mind-set in Davos. The best assets of the hotel are the snow beach terrace (beautiful panorama), the bar area (at the evening), the balcony (south side, although do not mind the lacking painting); and as said the garden/wood around. For quests from the US: do not expect the level of service or infrastructure that is normal in hotels of the higher price class. Potential quests are recommended to verify also other historical hotels (www.swiss-historic-hotels.com). Given the reaction of fellow quests, our experiences are not isolated. The description of one of the staff classifying the hotel as poor seems to resemble the attitude of the owner, namely rather to save than to invest in the quests, which otherwise would certainly return. The low entrance level of the fee to join the "friends of the Schatzalp" distinguishes the hotel sharply from other similar historical buildings around the world, and indicates the deplorable situation of the hotel. It is hartbreaking that such a beautiful building is not in the right hands.
If you want to enjoy this jugendstil/art nouveau hotel in the mountains you are recommended to it quick before it is too late.

In July 2008 I spent an outstanding 5 days at theSchatzalp hotel in Davos. Me, Scottish, 47 and working in London. Schatzalp, set high on the hillside overlooking Davos. A picture perfect postcard! My room well appointed with a super balcony overlooking the valley and the view changed constantly as the sun moved and the light highlighted first one area then another. Sunset was spectacular. Sorry but was not up early enough to say what sunrise looked like! At the end of my stay I got all too familiar with the mountains when I took part - slowly - in the terrific Davos Mountain Marathon. What a treat it was to finnish and to sink into the huge bath with which my ensuite was equipped. This was followed by a beer on the balcony sun lounger. The perfect end to a perfect day. If you are addicted to blackberry and mobile phone then please go somewhere else. If, on the otherhand, you enjoy peace and tranquility then I cannot recommend the Schatzalp too highly. Stewart.

Hotel Schatzalp is situated high on the mountains above the lovely town of Davos. It is reached via a mountain railway which takes about 5 mins.
The views from the hotel are stunning, and the peace and tranquility unbelievable.Once inside the hotel was so warm and welcoming that it was difficult to believe that it was below freezing outside. This hotel has character and style. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Breakfast and dinner in the dining room were of a high standard and if there is not anything on the dinner menu which takes your fancy there is a panarama restaurant as well. It is well worth paying a visit to the restaurant for the magnificent views.
We stayed in one of the superior rooms on the south side. The room was very spacious with wonderfully comfortable beds, there was a balcony from which we could see down into the village or watch the piste makers at work on the other side of the valley.
There are wonderful walks around the hotel and down into Davos , which itself is very friendly and welcoming. Oh - The snow was fantastic

Just got back from a long weekend at the Schatzalp and was very disapointed - if you are skiing then give this place a wide berth.

Arriving by car,we dropped our cases off at Funicular and was directed to carpark, some 750m away and at a cost of 20cf a day (no mention of that in there glossies!)

Funicular station top and bottom is dirty, rundown and staff are miserable as sin.Funicular runs every 20-30 mins during day so expect to waste a fair amount of break waiting.

Hotel is really rundown, said that the piano bar has a lovely ambience. But - The rooms are very poor,we had a south facing superior double - I would hate to see what a standard room is like. The condition of the rooms was unbelievable for a 3 star hotel.Art deco as they promote is not a excuse for bare, stained and very badly chipped rooms.

Food in resturant is also not a good standard.

Sking in Davos was great though! - just don`t make the same mistake we did and book here!
