This place is great. I stayed here with my 5 year old son on a ski trip last January. Although the rooms can be tiny, that's where my fault finding ends. The location is superb - it is right in the center of St. Moritz, literally a 3 minute walk from the main bus stop to all ski resorts, and a 6 min walk to the first lifts. It is close to the train station as well. The views from the lakeside rooms are nothing short of incredible. The breakfast buffet is just a stuffing. The food in the more formal restaurant is great as well. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the hotel has all the facilities you need for a great ski vacation, including a secure ski room, multiple restaurants and bars, sauna and steam and FREE child care. If you are going to ski, go to the main Edagin St. Moritz website and book a "top hit" package. We did and what a deal! My son stayed and skied for free and thus the whole trip (ground cost) was about $1200 for a week! Basically, we loved it.

Location couldn’t be much better – just on the edge of St Moritz Dorf shopping centre (which isn’t as big as you might expect, by the way), five minutes’ walk from lake side, five minutes’ walk from funicular, five minutes’ walk from main bus stops. St Moritz Dorf isn’t the kind of place you’re likely to find ski in ski out accommodation. By the way, I don’t understand why some people describe the valley bus service as poor; I found it to be excellent. It is a bus service though, not a ski resort shuttle: the busses run to timetables, and the bus you need to get to other ski areas may be only hourly, so get some timetables from the tourist office and do some planning before you shoulder your skis and head out in the morning. And as you head out in your ski boots, mind the floor in the final part of the corridor to the hotel basement exit; slippery! I had my biggest ski fall there in ages, bruising my elbow and drop-kicking a cleaning woman’s trolley in the process.

Hotel staff are very polite, helpful and friendly. I’m never sure about tips in Switzerland though – are they expected, or would a couple of Swiss Francs offered to the woman who escorts you to your room be seen as insulting in a hotel of this standing? Am I the only one who gets stressed out over tipping protocols, I wonder.

The public areas of the hotel are spectacular, all the nicer for being recently refurbished. Wooden floors and walls, marble staircase, all non-smoking apart from a designated, sealed-off smoking room. My room was oddly incongruous then – rather Ikea in style. Not that that’s a bad thing though; everything was new, and despite the room being smallish, there was more than enough storage space. And clean – that goes without saying.

Food – excellent; five-course meals served in a remarkably posh dining room. I wish my airline luggage allowance had allowed me to bring some smarter clothes and shoes – jeans, t-shirt and walking shoes made me look slobbish compared to my fellow diners who had driven to St Moritz from Italy and Germany with cars full of smart jackets and clean shirts next to their skis.

Given the elegant, sophisticated feel of the hotel, upscale in age and income, you might be surprised at what you find in the basement: three après-ski bars of different styles, one of which seems to accept regular transplants from somewhere in Ibiza where young people go large, and being a DJ is highly aspirational. This might be a plus or a minus; it does mean you have a choice of après-ski watering holes without having to leave the hotel, but the Ibiza nights feature music loud enough to make the entire hotel building resonate like a giant speaker cabinet: you don’t just hear the music, you can actually feel the walls and even your bed vibrate in a second floor room. Loud music of this genre - strangely incongruous with the style of the hotel. I don’t think it goes on too late though, but it’s something to consider if you’re a light sleeper who likes early nights.

The hotel provides afternoon coffee and cakes for weary skiers, but beware: unlike most ski hotels that do this, they aren’t complimentary – you have to pay - so don’t just walk in from a hard day’s skiing and help yourself to a sticky bun. Conversely though, the contents of your room’s minibar are complimentary (yes – you heard me correctly). I’ve never seen that before.

This is a beautiful hotel and the ideal setting for a romantic break or to enjoy the surrounding scenery. We paid a supplement and stayed in a room with a lake view, this is worth the extra money. The view is quite stunning. The room was a little small but still very adequate for our needs. The bathroom was well decorated and very clean. The meals at the hotel were very good and we could not fault it. The sauna and steam rooms are free to use and there is a lovely relaxation room overlooking the lake, where you can lay back on a lounger and let the world pass you by. Highly recommend the hotel.

We had a superb room, in comfort, size, and view. The included breakfast buffet was huge, diverse and delicious. This hotel, located right by several bus stops, gives you a free bus pass, returnable or a fee is charged, that allows you to travel all over St. Moritz. Only drawback was a very grumpy and less than helpful front desk man. We were off season and the town was empty but there were two restaurants (plus the hotel) on the square with diverse menus. If you were on season, high ticket stores are a quick walk away (most were closed when we were there).

Really nice and cousy family and kids friendly hotel. No problems with children chairs when eating, stuff very patient and helpful. Located directly in the city center, so very convenient :) Nice massage and nice sauna available plus nice balcony with the view on the lake.

The Schweizerhof must be one of the best located hotels in Saint Moritz. It has picturesque views over the lake (request a room on this side of the hotel, if possible) and you can easily walk to anywhere in town within five minutes. I was there in the summer. So, I can't vouch for the accessibility to the ski slopes. We trotted easily up the hill to the cable car station in the centre of town. But, it would certainly be more tricky with ice and snow on the roads and skis over your shoulder.

The service throughout was friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were pretty nice. The selection is not enormous, but everything was pretty tasty. As for the rooms, they are never going to win any design prizes, but the beds are comfortable, the Internet access very efficient and everything is extremely clean (mmm... what else would you expect in Switzerland?). The only strange thing was the shower head, which you had to contort in order to get water to come out in the right direction if you kept it hooked on the peg on the wall. The last morning I never managed to work out how to twist it the right way and had to hold the shower head in my hand (which I always find annoying).

I'm not sure what the prices are like in high season, but they were extremely reasonable for my stay in July. If you're looking for somewhere practical and pretty low-key, then I'd definitely recommend you consider the Schweizerhof.
