“Consistent quality, good value”
Reviewed 31 July 2013

A few steps from the shops and tucked away in a cellar, this is a great warm winter place and even feels cool in summer. A long established restaurant with a good formula of a constant menu with daily specials advertised in advance for the week, so if it is Tuesday, it must be Bollito Misto! The quality is always very good home cooking with no surprises and no disappointments. The prices are fair for Lugano, particularly for the daily specials. The staff are friendly and efficient. During my last visit there were two American ladies who had gone there specially, after reading a review in their local paper in America and they were delighted. The local Merlot wine tastes best when served in the ceramic cups!

“Loved this restaurant”
Reviewed 18 July 2013

My husband and I wanted to dine at this restaurant, because it got great reviews by both Rick Steves and Fodor's. The reviews were spot on. Great, simple, home-cooked food at a reasonable price for what you got, and excellent service. A bit difficult to find, it's located on a small street, in the basement of a building. There is no view, it is not at all sleek or glitzy, but go for the food. We enjoyed it so much, we went back the next night. I had the osso bucco, which is one of my favorite dishes - I've had it many places, and this ranked right up there with the best. The risotto served with it was perfect. (I also ordered osso bucco at the restaurant at the Hotel Splendide Royal - this was almost half the price, and more flavorful!) We also tried a chicken dish, and lake perch, both were excellent. We enjoyed simple plates of prosciutto and salame for appetizers, although the second night as a special, they had prosciutto served with burrata - that was awesome. For dessert, we ordered gorgonzola cheese and tiramisu. The tiramisu was very good, but the gorgonzola was to die for. It was unusually creamy - the best we've ever had. With a good glass of red wine, we were in heaven. We had to go back a second time just to have it again! The servers didn't speak much English, but they did a great job and were particularly pleasant.

“Local food at its best”
Reviewed 16 July 2013

Thankful to find some well cooked local dishes at a moderate price as Switzerland is an expensive destination. Nice "cellar" type atmosphere and lovely food and vegetables. Wine served in pottery cups and smiling service made this a very good dining experience.

“Good food, nice service”
Reviewed 22 June 2013

We were warmly welcomed and well-attended to during our meal, despite our lack of functioning Italian. The food is simple, but flavourful, and the portions are decent as well. Though there is no patio to take advantage of the beautiful weather and views in Lugano, the space was cozy, rustic and pleasant. Definitely recommend!

“A real gem but closed on Sunday!”
Reviewed 22 May 2013

We came across this restaurant one Saturday night. As the weather was so appalling - wind and rain in the middle of May (just like England) - it was nice to descend into a cosy basement. We hadn't booked but the waiter found us a table that was shared by another couple. Normally I wouldn't like this but the restaurant was quite buzzy and we didn't feel too overheard, if you know what I mean. We shared a plate of cold meats - hams and salamis with pickled veg - then a main course of fried perch with a very tasty creamy rissotto which is rather undersold as plain rice, and my partner had pork steak - very tender - with noodles. With a carafe or two of decent house white wine, pud and coffee, it all came to less than 80 Swisses. Considering the meal we had the night before had a consisted of pizza, wine and coffee for 100 Swisses, this was very good value. The restaurant has been described as old fashioned, but it's not fine dining, the decor is rustic kitsch but quite bearable and the food and service are good. Had it been open on Sunday we would have gone there again and not have been ripped off in the town square!
