We had a wonderful two night stay in this really lovely hotel. It is beautifully appointed surrounded by lovely gardens. The friendliness and attentiveness of the staff were impressive. We really loved the comfort and beauty of the public rooms, as well as our own room. The food, ambiance and attention to detail were second to none. We really recommend this hotel to anyone seeking comfort, rest and lifting of the spirits!

Beautiful hotel south of the centre of Lugano (15 minute walk, or 20 minutes when you go through the park - nice views when you do). It's also very easy to take the bus into town. The trainstation for going up the Monte Bre is right behind the hotel.
Splendid service. Very nice staff. You can stay at the hotel for dinner (with good weather conditions you can sit outside, which is lovely), where the food is excellent or you can go across the street to Arte. A great place to eat.
The hotel has a good vibe. The room where I stayed at (a double) was perfect for me, but when you are with two people, you need to take turns using the bathroom. It is extremely small. The bed is very comfortable, the balcony wonderful. A strong recommendation to stay in this hotel when visiting Lugano.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the fourth floor, overlooking park and lake.

Such a shame that this was a business trip, but spending all day in a beautiful conference room with three windows opening onto balconies overlooking the gardens was such a delight compared to normal business facilities.
The hotel is immaculate and the staff unfailingly polite and helpful - despite all the unreasonable, urgent demands a working group can come up with. The wireless connection was reliable and - unusual in Switzerland - free of charge. The constant supply of fresh fruit, water and pastries was very welcome and the breakfasts and lunches on the terrace just perfect. I only regret that we weren't able to sample the Arte restaurant.
My room was in the modern wing but was more than adequate and immaculately clean. The balcony gave onto the garden and the variety of trees is such that I didn't miss a lake view at all.
A beautiful place and I would love to go back just to enjoy the surroundings and the service and to try the pool and spa.
Only one small complaint - I left something in my room and despite calling the morning after my departure they were apparently unable to find it - it was nothing valuable in monetary terms but valuable none the less to me and replacing it will be difficult.

We have stayed many times at this wonderful hotel which has recently undergone a major renovation. It is ideally situated in the Castognola area in its own extensive gardens, near the lakeside, with Lugano centre, accessible on foot if feeling energetic, or even by frequent bus service. The guest accommodation is stylish and most rooms have a balcony and lake view. There is a superb swimming pool which opens onto the gardens, and a terrace where breakfast, afternoon tea and evening meals are served. Reception staff are unfailingly friendly and helpful; unusual today!
There is a formal dining room where to be frank, the service and meals are somewhat unpredictable and variable. There are a lot of potentially interesting dishes on the menu, but often the expectation fails to be turned into reality; there is often evidence of penny pinching. Less than top quality ingredients poorly executed. Occasionally expectations are met and high quality dishes are prepared. Serving staff vary in experience and often there is lack of leadership. The breakfast buffet has been outstanding but at other times lacks dishes which are normally there and empty dishes are not replenished; cost cutting? On a lucky day the dining and breakfast experience can be outstanding. Its is worth staying there for the hotel experience and hope that the chefs and dining areas are having a good day. We will certainly visit again.

My brief stay at Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola was simply outstanding. This is a true European style luxury hotel - it is 5 star in service, rooms, facilities and friendliness. The hotel is in beautiful gardens and has a totally relaxing ambience. The location is perfect and it is only a short 10 to 15 minute scenic walk into the centre of Lugano. The hotel's private Lido facilty was another oasis - right on the lake. I was not familar with the Lido concept before my stay at this property but it is a great additional guest facilty to offer. The breakfast was plentiful and vairied. My only negative comment was that I could not stay longer! Maybe another time - I certainly hope so. To Barbara, Ivan and all the staff thank you so much. It was just a wonderful experience to stay at your hotel.

Room Tip: Try to book a room on the 4th floor with a balcony - the lake view is amazing!

Stayed here for 2 nights earlier in August. Charming staff, great location. As all Grand Hotels the lobby and main communal areas are impressive as are the gardens and the hotel is firmly in the luxury bracket. The rooms are a bit "stuffy" and lack some modern touches, air conditioning works but a bit noiseier than some more modern units.
Summary: a well run ship, more for a relaxing holiday than a business trip.

Kind of on the spur of the moment, we had decided to take in a bit of the Locarno Film Festival and since all hotels in that area were fully booked, we stayed here.

When we arrived we were OFFERED an upgrade to a junior suite and having been shown the room we accepted it with thanks. While looking out from one of our two balconies we happened to notice that the waiters in the open-air terrace restaurant were very formally dressed and it dawned on us that one of us had only brought dressy shorts, so to be on the safe side we inquired about the dress code. The restaurant said all was okay as long as all guests wore long trousers (it was 89 degrees F). So, we called reception and they seemed surprised and promised to investigate. After ten minutes or so, the verdict was in: one of us could appear in shorts, but "it would be preferred" if we both wore proper trousers.

We spent a bit of time thinking the whole thing through and decided we didn't want to be a nuisance and to walk a mile or so into town to have dinner with regular people. We were somewhat annoyed because the website talked a lot about relaxation and a family feeling and we hadn't quite grasped that they had a dress code.

We nearly left it at that, but later that night, our internet connection dropped (first mine, then my partner's) and it was impossible to reconnect using the original password and user ID which had been handed to us. Having exhausted the possibilities for further work/entertainment (they had two cute miniature TV sets), we decided to make it an early night. Well, getting into bed, our mattresses (two twin beds pushed together which drifted apart as we climbed into bed) made annoying squeaking sounds. A squeaking mattress in this most noble hotel -- it was the first such mattress we had encountered since boarding school.

The following morning we had breakfast in the open-air restaurant (shorts were okay) and we were served properly but without a smile and greeting. It started to grate. When we walked to the buffet a second time and found that the parma ham had run out and been substituted with (for us) unidentifiable cold cuts, I asked the captain what it might be and he replied in two syllables "tur-key" , seemingly disappointed at our failure to recognize this "haute cuisine" item.

Still, we were going to let things be, but when we were checked out and no one bothered to ask how our stay had been, the camel's back was broken. After a brief run down to the very kind and friendly receptionist (probably a hotel school student), she referred us to HH The General Manager who ushered me into an official-looking room.

As I repeated the run-down, he very elegantly stated that the hotel wished to maintain "a certain standard", offering no apology. As I continued with my list, the squeaking mattress raised an eyebrow and then the GM continued to fold his hands in front of his suit, smiling condescendingly and all-knowingly. After some time, he opened the door of the meeting room, indicating that the "audience" was over. I could not resist telling him that it was now clear why the waiters at the restaurant behaved the way they did.

I suppose that we should have anticipated that one needed a pair of trousers to eat in what resembles a poolside restaurant in the Swiss tropics in the evening heat of 89 degrees. Fine, mea culpa, BUT the way the GM dealt with the complaints was totally off.

The property is manicured and fastidious. The bathrooms are immaculate. Everything except the Wi-Fi connection and the squeaking mattresses is as deliberate, purposeful, elegant and posh as the clientele to whom we may have done irreparable harm with our lowly presence.

So, if you would like to enjoy this earthly paradise, please be serious, whisper and for goodness' sake make sure you dressed to the hilt to partake of an evening meal in the pristine terraced restaurant. It's okay to smoke at the table though -- it is an open-air place after all.

Room Tip: If you want a view of the lake, you must book rooms on the third or fourth floor.,
