Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola
Ranked #2 of 45 Hotels in Lugano
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 3 September 2013

Switzerland is expensive, and this hotel is a real splurge, but worth it for a special occasion. It is a little bit out of the downtown area in its own park just across the street from the lake of Lugano. The rooms are lovely, and most, if not all of them, have balconies with a view. There is also a beautiful restaurant with gourmet food, and summertime dining on the terrace is a dream. Tennis, pool and spa if you want them, or take a hike up the mountain behind the hotel. There is a funicular for those who would rather take the easier way.

just sheer class. unbeatable. cannot elaborate. you need to experience it. The hotel has superb views ,very helpful staff. The gym is small but adequate for a short break. Our room was a suite with a patio/balcony. Everything was just perfection. breakfast was leisurely and excellent in an outdoor area. Walking distance from the congress centre and centre of town.

Room Tip: the junior suite is a room you wouldnt want to leave!well its not just a room....

Dear Guest,

It was a pleasure reading your review !
Our goal is to offer relax and unforgettable moments to all our Guests.
The hotel is located in a peaceful place, right in front of the lake and not so far away from down town. The gym and beauty corner are effectively small but this setting permits us to take more care of our Guests.
We look forward to welcoming you for an other occasion at the Villa Castagnola.

We booked this hotel based on other trip advisor reviews, and would agree with most comments made. The hotel is maintained to a high standard. If possible book a room with a lake view - ours was excellent with a good sized terrace. We used the lido in particular, and it is worth mentioning that there were always sufficient loungers both at the lido and around the pool. As mentioned in other reviews, the hotel is about 2km from town (with no shuttle service), which can make dining more difficult. We found the concierge advice helpful and had a coupe of lovely casual meals at local restaurants. The only areas worth mentioning are that the air conditioning in the room was little noisy - although this did cover occasional inter room noise. In all, a great stay. Every request we made was met, and we would recommend as long as people were comfortable with the distance from town and traditional atmosphere. In return you get a great view and excellent amenities.

Dear Laura,

thank you very much for giving your opinion. We are happy to see that you appreciated your stay in our hotel and that you could enjoy either the lido and the pool.
It is true that we are a bit away from the city center but only 15 minutes walking. The nice part is that we are located in a quiet place where you can relax and at only a crossroad you can enjoy the lake with our private lido.
We thank you also to have mentioned that the air conditioning was noisy. We will work on that point and of course for your next stay at the Villa Castagnola it will be set up.
Looking forward to welcoming you soon.
Best regards,

If you're staying in Lugano for pleasure i would definitely recommend staying at Grand Hotel Villa Castagnola.

The hotel is located in a quiter location at the end of the Lugano waterfront strip, so you're not right in the hustle and bustle of the town center, yet you're still only a 10-15 minute walk away through the park.

The hotel has lovely rooms, 2 lovely restaurants, a bar, pool, small gym and spa.

The staff are also very nice and helpful.

Lovely place. In the middle of high season and still you feel absolutely unstressed. The hotel is beautiful, great staff, restaurant service is excellent, the park and tennis court are one-of-a-kind and finally, the hotel has a great private lido with direct lake access. This is a signature grand hotel. It has real class.

For our first stay in Lugano, we stayed here with the kids in the San Salvidore suite. A huge room with two separate bedroom and baths. There are 3 balconies to take advantage of the stunning lake view. The service at the hotel was great, they truly took care of us. The hotel breakfast was great. Prices for room service are very expensive as are the restaurant on he hotel. The hotel has a nice garden, ideal for kids to run around and the hotel is away from the main touristy section, which is nice, but was a little walk to get to a nice restaurant. A block away was a great spot for pizza and Italian food called Neapolis. We had take out pizza one night, which the kids loved instead of a 1 1/2 hour sit down dinner. All in all, we will be back to this hotel.

Beautiful old historical hotel but not dark and dreary. Lovely pastel coloured room overlooking a tropical park just across from the lake. Wonderful terrace for breakfast. Staff spoke all languages and couldn't be more helpful. I'd definitely go again. Garden area dotted with fabulous modern sculptures and lovely pool. Worth the money. Check it out online, you'll see.
