“Checked out after one night because of location and Abba”
Reviewed 22 June 2007

The hotel is situated right by the lake, so the location is nice, but it is still a bit off the center of Lugano. The other side of the center is a nicer area. This, combined with the noisy and seemingly dodgy bar downstairs, and the fact that they play loud Abba-music at breakfast, made me check out after only one night, instead of staying the four nights I had planned. I moved to the other part of town. (I have nothing against Abba-music, but during breakfast on the terrace by the lake...a mis-match if I ever saw one)

Stayed at this hotel for 2 days. We had the room 51 with a beautiful view over the lake (breathtaking view I should say). The hotel is not in the center but it is about 10 minutes walk on the lake boardwalk. Rooms are big and decorated old fashioned. The breakfast was really not worth it. The bar and the dancing is more for singles with bar girls... Overall, nice place to stay in Lugano. Don't forget to eat at the casino's restaurant. Great place to eat with beautiful view.

Good location by the lake, but a little out of the centre. Clean room. The inside bar is very shady (full of "bar girls") at night.

We booked this hotel because it looked lovely in the photographs on its website. We parked in the loading zone in front of the hotel and entered a small, dark, unprepossessing lobby. A sullen young woman receptionist greeted us by saying we had to move our car or we'd get a ticket. We had a lot of luggage and asked her if a policeman came, could she please tell him we'd be right down? We received a curt 'no' in response, 'it is not allowed.' It turns out the hotel has only one parking space! We were lucky to find a metered space on the street, and were fortunate that the next day was a holiday, or otherwise my husband would have had to get up at 7am to put more money in the meter. I understand there is some parking available at a bank across the street, however. Our room was shabby and dated, but very clean, and we had a tiny, step-out terrace overlooking the water. The bathroom, also old, was marvelously large and well-lit, and perfectly fine. We'd planned on eating dinner one night at the hotel's Lord of Tillingdon restaurant, but it was depressing and smelled a bit musty. Breakfast was served on a pretty terrace with views of the lake. It was on the skimpy side compared to other hotels we stayed at in Ticino. The location is okay, but all the action in the city is about a mile away. It's no problem, though, because the walk along the waterfront is lovely. We'd booked for two nights but checked out after only one.

My family loved this hotel! Huge rooms (compared with most places we stayed), very clean, fantastic location and even better prices! We had an amazing view of the lake and the restaurant was excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful (although their English was more limited compared with other hotel staff throughout Southern Europe). I would definitely stay here again!

We spent one night at the Victoria in May 10. The hotel is lakefront, with a beautiful view. Is an older but well refurbished building. The lobby is somewhat impersonal and the front desk clerks discreetly friendly. We had the room No. 57 in the 4th floor. It appeared to have been updated recently, with newer carpet and furniture. It was mid-size, the bed was comfortable and the bathroom small but adequate. I don't understand why some bathrooms in Europe have no shower screen or, like the Victoria, half a glass screen which covers only the end opposite to the shower head. So when the shower is used, the water splashes all over the bathroom. I read some other reviews complaining about the noise from a next-door-night club, but I did not hear anything. Continental breakfast was served in a very cool and stilysh lakeview terrace, consisting of the typical european fare of rolls, croissants, ham, cheese, cereal, yoghurt and orange juice and was plenty and good. One of the advantages of the Victoria is to be located right accross the street from the "trenino" stop. The trenino is a sightseeing hop-on-hop-off tram that goes around all the mayor city atractions at a very low fare, I believe about U$5.00 per person, and is the best way to get a glimpse of the town. If you are looking for a well-located, decent and clean all-charm hotel at a reasonable rate the Victoria is the place for you. We paid an internet rate of about U$128 a night.

I recommend this hotel highly: I had a great room, albeit the decor could use some rethinking, especially the blue and white wierd looking wall paper. The view of the Lake overcame all misgivings about the decor -- with a cute little balcony and French doors, I would go back there anytime! The staff were extremely helpful, especially Tonio, who must be the most positive person alive. He never said no to any inquiry. I had the half pension and the food was very good. However, if you don't like having a strip joint as part of the hotel, you may not like it here, since the so-called cocktail lounge, the Cece, features nude dancers -- but, hey, you dont have to go there. I went through there at night when the front door to the hotel was locked and got an eyeful. Customers were mostly desperate males and not many, it was pretty empty, except for Saturday night. If you are a desperate male, please note that the cheapest drink costs 22 Swiss Francs, that is 22 Canadian dollars!!!!! So, I hope you are also rich as well as desperate.

All in all, great value -- it is also fun to meet the owners, Lord and Lady de Tillington and their son Junior, a very interesting family, no doubt about it.
