You can dine in grand style at the 5 star hotels in Lugano, but if you want outstanding local Swiss cuisine go to Grotto della Salute. A lovely old Ticino house, completely unpretentious, and you can dine outside in the summer. It is in an old residential quarter above the railway station and very difficult to find by car unless you know the area; forget sat nav. Take a taxi if you wish to enjoy the extensive wine list of high quality Ticino Merlot. Daily specials include roast suckling pig, roast rabbit, roast veal, leg of lamb, fresh perch from Lake Lugano, fresh artichoke salad etc, and there is a menu of traditional Ticino/Italian dishes, with truffels in season. Desert- try home made lemon sorbet with Limoncello. Service is friendly and efficient and they have a sense of humour. The quality of the ingredients is outstanding and generous and priced accordingly; CHF about 80 pp for 3 courses including wine.
