Hotel Restaurant Derby

I booked this hotel last minute and chose it mainly based on price, since it was by far the cheapest with a triple available. The hotel website isn't very impressive, so wasn't sure quite how it would end up, but it turned out to be a comfy little place! Please keep in mind I stayed here in summer, so can't comment about what it's like during ski season!

This is a comfortable but not luxurious hotel. The decor is very "ski cabin"-esque with lots of wood. Our triple was a decent size (3rd bed was converted couch and the other two were side by side), with quaint sloping walls. I wouldn't say it was spacious but for a night or two it was fine. The room included a mini-bar, tv and probably one of the cleanest bathrooms I have ever seen. Our room also had a small balcony with a view of the Matterhorn. There is a *tiny* elevator to bring you upstairs and while the hallways are a bit dark, the rooms are light and bright.

Breakfast was a bit of a disappointment and not really worth investigating. We did eat dinner at the hotel restaurant one night - the food was decent but the seating area outside is awkwardly arranged and cramped, which was slightly uncomfortable.

As far as location, this place is seconds from the train station and Gornergrat railway, which is great since you have to walk everywhere in Zermatt. It's an easy stroll down the one main pedestrian street to see all the shops and sights in Zermatt. Noise was definitely not an issue, as our room faced the back courtyard, unless you count the birds chirping away in the morning.

Staff were very friendly and welcoming as well. Overall, this seems to be a great value in an expensive town and I'd definitely recommend it.

We read on TA that this hotel has the best location, and was too true! walked out of zermatt train station, you can see it, its literally 2 minute walk if you are not carrying skies. We are budget traveler, stayed at the apartment building 15 meters behind the main hotel, its so quiet. We had a studio, has 2 nice comfortable beds, they even come in daily to change sheets/towels and clean, usually when we stayed in condo/studio, no one cleans for the entire stay. the small kitchen is nice, has pots/plates/utensils, Zermatt is really expensive to eat out, so we just went to market called Coop right across street from train station (2 min walk fr hotel) bought grocery and cooked all the dinners. It has a small table with 2 chairs which is fine for 2 of us to eat every night. Hot shower is very hot and good water pressure, it has a ski room downstairs you can store your skies and boots after skiing. The price includes buffet breakfast which is very good, we had big breakfast every morning, when weather was good, we skiied without lunch till 4 pm so we could get as many runs as possible, speically Italy side. The hotel is on the main street, easily walk to all shops/bars/everything, extremely convenient. We booked thru bookings.com, the hotel told us if we book directly with them, could be 10% cheaper. We had to leave 5:30 am the last day to catch 6am train, they prepared 2 lunch boxes with ham sandwiches and lots of fruit for us to take on the train. The hotel is not luxurious like some of Zermatt 5 star hotels, but if you are a budget traveler like us, highly recommend this place. It also has free wifi, but we dont have lap top.

Stayed in the annexe of the main hotel, just behind it, which they called a studio room. 150 metres from the stations - the large, well-priced supermarket is opposite the main station.
We didn't expect the cooking facilities; fan-forced oven, hotplates, medium sized fridge and enough cooking utensils to manage. This was a bonus as Zermatt eateries were super expensive.
There was a shower, no bath. No safe nor airconditioning but we left the windows open and it was comfortable. Heaps of heating. The flat was a bit old but it was clean. There was a balcony to sit outside on and the bed was very good with good linen. They have free wi fi but you have to use it in the foyer of the main hotel, or in the dining room. Breakfast was fine. Overall the place was hideously expensive but cheap for Zermatt and as you have a kitchen it helps keep the costs down. I found the souvenirs here as cheap as anywhere. Lots of competition.

Nice, clean hotel within easy walking distance of Zermatt train station. Centrally located on main street with many shops, restaurants, banks, etc. directly below. We had a large hotel room for myself and 2 kids, with large balcony at rear w/view of Matterhorn, TV in room, and large bathroom. No complaints about room and desk staff was extremely helpful and offered unsolicited advice on hikes, day trips, weather. Breakfast was included and offered bread options, cereals, yogurts, fruit, meat and cheese. Internet available in lobby on their computer. Our luggage was held for several hours after check-out without trouble. We did not eat at the restaurant for meals, but we did have coffee and drinks outside (nice for people watching). Would definitely recommend.

Hotel Derby lived up to our expectations - tastefully decorated in Swiss tradition - original paintings on all walls. A lovely double room with a living room annexe, and private balcony made it such good value.
Breakfasts were very good, but we had dinner one night and we were amazed that the main diningroom complainedllowed smokers- cigareetes and stinking cigars wafting all over our food. We complained and we were shifted to the annexe with tables not set with white table cloths, and amongst a tour group . The hotel prioritises its smoking guests over the non-smokers - such asa disappointment . In France we found restaurants were more progressive with smokers outside!

This hotel was situated just 50m to the right of the main train station in Zermatt. Its a very clean hotel and even though it was right above their own restaurant - it was very quiet and allowed a good nights sleep! There was free wifi available which was very convenient. Breakfast wasn't too bad - just your average continental breakfast. I was just very happy with the cleanliness of the rooms and the location was fantastic.
