Terrific place to have lunch. Easy to get to for skiers. Non-skiers can get there on the Trockner Steg bubble lift. Good food and greatviews of the Matterhorn. Terrace outside is wonderful if the weather is good. Helpful and pleasant staff. A must!

Great hosts/owners! Fun apres ski atmosphere (with a band) in the early afternoons. Lift ticket from Zermatt is 49 Swiss Francs return (remember to grab a map of the ski runs at the ticket counter); I don't ski, wanted to spend the next day in Zermatt--went up Friday aft, went back down Sat., then had to buy another return to get back up and then come back down for our Monday departure (life's expensive). Husband, the skier, purchased a one-day international lift ticket, which meant he could ski into Italy (he had lunch in Italy on one of the mountains, less costly than lunch in Switzerland, by the way). Dinner and breakfast was included in our room at Schwarzsee (room 6, first floor, Zermatt valley view side, not Matterhorn side--quiet, very clean, lots of windows, very bright). Drinks are not included in dinner (1.5 ltr of water is 10 francs--they do not serve tap water. Beers are reasonable, after dinner coffee/tea around 5 francs), but coffee and tea are included in 7:30-10am breakfast (which for some reason lacked the fresh fruit shown in some photos). Seven pm dinner (very good!) is definitely not vegetarian, so if you're vegan or gluten free, bring your own provisions on your first trip up (or speak with staff about dietary needs-perahps they can cook to suit). The trip up the mountain must be carefully planned, as the gondola hours are approx. 9-4:30pm. Ski rental is available in Zermatt, just before you board the gondola. No TV in rooms (yey!--bring a book), very good internet connection, free wi-fi. Friendly, young staff from all over makes for interesting conversations. Next time I'd go for a Matterhorn side room (no. 5 would be my first choice), but our room also had a deck that we could walk out onto. Room 6 had just enough room for my travel yoga mat. Bed was comfortable; my interrrupted sleep was because of the high altitude, I believe. Room 6 has shower only, good and hot, but not a strong stream (it's at 7000ft afterall). No water kettle in room, communal hair dryer out in the hallway--use it and then put it back for others to use. Shoes off once you're on the floor you're staying--sure helps keep the place clean (communal slippers provided)! Towels changed, room made up daily. There is a public place downstairs to store ski/board equipment overnight. Wonderful place, would stay again. Bring your camera. And if you're using your tablet or smart phone to play games/watch movies in the public area, use earphones, turn off sound (that's my personal pet peeve--this advice oughta be followed wherever one travels). Schwarzsee Hotel Restaurant -- loved it.

Room Tip: First floor Matterhorn side - (one can walk out onto the deck on either the Matterhorn or Zermatt valley side).

Wonderful peace and quiet when all the skiers go down the hill at 5pm and we had the Matterhorn all to ourselves until the next morning. We could be the first group up the mountain and get more fresh slopes than anyone who stayed down in Zermatt. Comfortable rooms, tasty food, great staff.

I enjoyed staying at Schwartzsee so much I'm planning to visit again in 2015. Great value and staying halfway up the mountain was an experience in itself.

There was a fantastic Matterhorn view from our room, and it was amazing to watch the pink glow of sunrise on the mountain. The light was incredible and had a huge energising effect -- the morning light hits Schwartzsee several hours before Zermatt itself, because it is so high up. There's good live music from early afternoon until the sun goes behind the Matterhorn and a very friendly, inclusive vibe at the restaurant, especially for anglophones. Our room had a shared deck and it was nice sitting in the evening sun.

The half board is a money-saver, given prices of food on the hill and in Zermatt, and the food was great - both the breakfast buffet and dinner. Hearty food and plenty of it. Drinks prices were reasonable and all staff were friendly and helpful.

Call the hotel prior to getting the gondola up, and someone from the staff will meet you with a cart for your luggage. Dealing with the gondola /luggage is really a non-issue, although we stressed about it a bit in the way there.

Next time I'd stay at Zermatt one night if the arrival time looked tight to get the last gondola, and travel up as soon as they let you on next morning.

Thank you Tanya, Dave and staff for a wonderful vacation experience. Our stay was way too short.

Room Tip: Room # 5 was superb. It was an end room, with a panoramic views. Don't worry about noise and "too much music". Music ends early evening.

We were lucky enough to book a table to spend St Patricks Day here. We had an absolutely fantastic day. The views from the restaurant were stunning and the food was fabulous. The live music was great and certainly created a party atmosphere. Tanja & Dave worked tirelessly with great staff to provide an amazing day. Can't wait to go back.
