“Just Perfect”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

My husband and I booked a room at the Kulmhotel hoping for a true mountain experience, and boy did we ever get it. We requested a room with a view, and we were not disappointed. Our view of the Matterhorn was just spectacular, which made for some amazing photos as the sun set and rose. We could not have been more pleased.

We also enjoyed exploring the area outside the hotel, including the incredible overlook just outside and behind the hotel. Just amazing panoramic views.

As others have said in previous reviews, you really are quite isolated after the last train leaves for the night. It’s a very quiet, peaceful experience to be up on the mountain, so close to the stars! It's perfect for disconnecting from the world (even though there is good WiFi access) and just enjoying a serene evening in the clouds.

The breakfast spread was fair, and the dinner options were just fine. I wasn’t blown away by the quality of the food, but it was good hotel food, and quite frankly, it was the only option. ;)

My husband did experience a bit of altitude sickness, being in such high elevations, so keep in mind that you might need to slow down a bit here. But… isn’t that why you’d visit such a majestic place? Enjoy!

At the end of a one-week visit to Zermatt, we decided to stay one night at the 3100 Kulmhotel. We had made many day trips in the past on the Gornergrat Bahn to the hotel for lunches and day hikes, staying overnight in Zermatt itself. However, given the unique location of the hotel at high altitude with great mountain views, we thought it would be worthwhile to try it.

The room rates included dinner and breakfast, since the railway shuts down in the evening and opens after breakfast starts. The dinner menu offered several choices for entrees and dessert, plus you could order salads and soups. On a scale of 1-5, our collective rating was 4 for dinner. we were looking forward to having their delicious garlic soup and goulash which they serve at lunch. Although they don't usually serve it at dinner, our waitress graciously got the kitchen to make the garlic soup and goulash for us. For breakfast, we were able to get eggs made to order, including omelettes.

There was an evening event beside the dining room - the World Cup game involving Switzerland was put on a large screen TV. Unfortunately for our hosts, Switzerland lost and was eliminated from the competition. However, it was exciting to watch part of the game with lots of locals.

Although we reserved two standard hotel rooms for our party of 4 adults, we were upgraded to the Matterhorn junior suite for one of the rooms. Great views from both rooms. Enjoyed being able to open the windows to get the fresh mountain air. Rooms were nicely design; good-size, modern bathrooms. Free wifi.

We were generally acclimatized to the 3100 m altitude since we had been in Zermatt for a week. All of us slept well that night. However, be aware that gas (the intestinal type) expands when you are at higher altitudes.

All in all, a unique and enjoyable experience for us. Very quiet in the evenings since all the day trippers are gone, and the stores shut down. Best combined with hikes.

Room Tip: Go after you get used to the altitude in Zermatt.

Having seen pictures of the 3100 Kulmhotel for years, when it finally came time for a trip to Zermatt, a stay there was practically a requirement. Up at 3100 meters, you can feel the altitude, but I didn't find it overwhelming except when digesting dinner. If you have the chance, do look at the forward weather report before booking. I had a reasonably unobstructed view, which was spectacular. The rooms are plenty large with good bathrooms. The heater/dryer rack included was a plus.

Internet service was quite good, but I wish they had added streaming ability. Nights are quiet, and not being able to catch an NBA playoff game via Slingbox was too bad. But that's a minor complaint. The reason for staying up there is have the peace of being there.

The restaurant was pretty good, with a solid salad bar, two options for the entree, and a delicious dessert. The staff was pleasant, and it probably didn't hurt that the waitress had eyes more beautiful than the mountain itself.

The room was equipped with a small water heater. Bringing some tea was a good idea as it helped stave off any altitude effects. The small shops downstairs were pretty good (but close promptly at 5 to allow the workers to get the last trains down). Found some items there not seen down in Zermatt.

Price was reasonable for a hotel of this calibre set so far up a mountain.

Room Tip: Worth getting a room on the front side with a Matterhorn view. If you wake up on a clear morning, y...

There's one reason you go to 3100 Gornergrat: the views. And they don't disappoint.

The hotel itself is nice, but a little on the basic side. We paid for the top tier "Junior Suite" and it was definitely the most simplistic $400/night room I've ever stayed in. That said, dinner and breakfast were included in the price and they were both outstanding.

The front desk service was fine, but certainly nothing extraordinary. Our server at the restaurant was excellent though.

I didn't realize how hard sleeping could be at that altitude. I'm 30 and it mildly bothered me, but it really bothered by 54-year-old mother (she had to take an extra blood pressure pill to lower her heart rate because of it).

That said, the views make up for any shortcomings. Watching the sun rise from our room was truly one of the most spectacular sights I've ever seen.

The thing that struck me the most about this hotel was how secluded it was from the rest of the world. Once the train stops running for the night, you are completely isolated on this mountain. That can definitely be a positive, but for me personally, it left me feeling a bit stir crazy. We had stayed in Zermatt the night before and enjoyed walking around the town. If I had to do the trip over again, I would have probably stayed the night again in Zermatt and just taken the train to Gornergrat for a day trip.

The location is just incredible. You wake up with the view on the highest mountains of Switzerland. Either Monte Rosa or Matterhorn view from your bed. Just this is already worth the stay. You are so remote, when all skiers and guest have left the Gornergrat you are just alone with the other guests. Cozy restaurant with decent food. Completely new and renovated rooms, with the name of the mountain you are facing with lots of detailed decoration inside. The staff is funny and very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good, with big selection, fresh bread, eggs, cereals. Great cheese selection.

Really nothing. Only keep in mind: the location is remote. No way of getting any nightlife, since last train in winter departs at 7.30 pm. But this is exactly why you want to be up there in the mountains! Alone!
