“Great family stay”
Reviewed 15 March 2012

My 4.5 year old son and myself decided to take a long weekend to Zermatt from Sweden. As it was our first time in Zermatt we did not have a great knowledge of the size of the town and the distance to the slopes.

We will for sure stay at Best Western Alpen Resort the next time we travel to Zermatt because of the hospitality and the kid friendly environment.

My husband and I stayed a week at the Alpen Resort with a group of approximately 30 skiers from Canada. The rooms are a good size and the beds are comfortable. The location is a bit out of the main shopping, eating, and ski rental part of town. There is a shuttle that stops close to the hotel which I recommend taking to get to the lifts. The breakfast buffet is good and there are lots of choices. The breakfast room is very nice. Because we were a big group our menu was set for dinner. Some of the dinners were "okay to good" and some, not so good. It is not 5 star dining by any stretch. They have a small "lounge" type area in the main lobby of the hotel. We enjoyed drinks and karaoke and dancing and making lots of noisy late into the night. I would stay here again.

Our seventh consecutive year at Alpen Resort with next season already booked. The statistic speaks for itself.
The overwhelming reason for returning to Alpen Resort year after year is the relaxed, friendly atmosphere created by the owners, the management and the attentive staff.
Fabulous Matterhorn views combined with a peaceful location.
The rooms are very well-appointed, large (have you ever skied in France?), clean and comfortable.
5-course dinners every evening and Bucks Fizz with breakfast if you so desire.
Facilities? Swimming pool, spa, sauna, steamroom and gym. In-house masseuse. Heated skiboot rack.
Service? Need a lift to the Klein Matterhorn area? Reception will arrange a taxi free of charge.
What's not to like? Book it. You will not be disappointed.

I was with a tour group & stayed for 2 nights. This hotel fell well short of my preconcieved ideas of staying in a hotel in Zermatt. We arrived after the agreed checkin time, however the rooms we're not ready, and when our very polite tour guide asked for a time estimate, the woman who appeared to be the manager gave him a rude response.

There are very different levels of accommodation. Some of our group stayed in elevated rooms with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn, whereas I & others were sent to the Dungeon rooms located underneath the tennis courts. The rooms were very dark with very poor lighting. I unpluged a lamp stand in the room and kept it in the bathroom during my stay to compensate for the poor light. Breakfast was fine.

It was also out of town a little, which meant a 5 minute walk to get into the main part of Zermatt where the restaurants were.

If I were to stay in Zermatt again, I'd stay somewhere closer to the main area, and no doubt pay more for the privilege.

Room Tip: Book a room with Matterhorn view.

Please read for Positive and improvement comments;
Kitchen/restaurant staff are really nice, very friendly
Cleaning staff also polite and look after your needs
Buffet breakfast is good
Hotel location is ok but don't be fooled, it's close to train station but really far from ski lift to Matterhorn glacier paradise but there is a shuttle service
Free wifi was appreciated

To improve
You can hear guests in rooms next to you and ppl in corridor / thin walls
We had a room in the 600 corridor - avoid at all cost , these are ground floor, no view rooms, it's like in an annex to the hotel
Room was incredibly hot.
On checking out left bags with reception for the morning, thought they would at least put them in a safe room, after 4 hours bags were still in public area.

Overall: too expensive, look elsewhere

Room Tip: Matterhorn facing. Not any of the 600 rooms

When we booked, the "Best Western" affiliation was a bit off-putting, we didn't know what to expect, but we were pleasantly surprised. Much nicer than a Best Western in North America. Posh pools and spa areas (in two buildings), spotlessly clean throughout, bedroom was surprisingly large, not recently renovated but no worries, with small kitchenette and wonderful view of the Matterhorn, a warm and cozy dining room (unfortunately with a group, we didn't eat as well as other guests on individual trips, but breakfasts were excellent), quiet location was easily walkable to the train station and a few metres from the bus stop to easily get to lift stations, very friendly staff--I would definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for a south-facing room with sunny balcony and views of the Matterhorn

Difficult to find fault with this hotel. The facilities, the wellness centre, the ski room and the rooms( not the most modern but with marvellous views of the Matterhorn) were all excellent. The weather was unusually cold but the hotel has a cosy and welcoming feeling. The restaurant was similarly good with a generous and varied buffet breakfast. The evening meals were of also of high quality, with imaginative and varied menus. The live music which accompanied dinner was unobtrusive and helped create an attractive ambience. The hotel staff were always cheerful and welcoming.
Although just outside the village centre the location of the hotel proved very convenient . The ski bus stops almost outside and because of the route taken the bus was invariably almost empty. The hotel also provides a complimentary taxi service to the Matterhorn Express.
We had only one complaint , the lack of a reasonably priced house wine.
Subject to that we were delighted to find such a good quality hotel at such a reasonble price and would love to return for our next skiing holiday.

Room Tip: South facing rooms have a magnificent view of the Matterhorn
