“Standards slip at the Alpenhof”
Reviewed 21 March 2014

We have stayed at the Alpenhof on at least five previous occasions. And we have had little if anything to complain about. Rooms, food, facilities and location have always been excellent.

However I do have some grumbles now. The piano bar is a longstanding feature. Now the piano is backed by a synthesiser and the music is blasted through the main lounge. Conversation is simply impossible and the repetoire is forty years old. It is noticeable how few people sit in the area before dinner.

Dining room service has really gone downhill. The table was often set for the wrong number of guests and had to be reset. English was not well understood by some waitresses and we were consistently recommended wine without the waitress knowing the price. When I persisted in asking the price I was told the bottle of house wine was SFr67, £50. That was after it was brought to the table. Nowhere was the price of the wine stated. In addition at times the service has been slow. This is all a pity in what I regarded in the past as a fine hotel.

I hope they put matters right. Guests need to be the focus. It seems that complacency has set in.

Room Tip: Request a mountain view and not near the piano bar.

This was a best stay of our holiday. The service team was very profession and friendly. From the front desk to their restaurant staff and including their spa masseuses were just a great friendly people. They offer guides, direction and even accommodate special request with a wide smile on their face.

Accommodation: The room was perfect with my fiance's special request to have the Matterhorn view. The balcony was simple but very relaxing - even out in the cold. The room is nicely decorated with a double bathtub and a nice sofa fabric.

Food: Breaksfast was a great spread of choices, yogurts, cereal and bakery. Dinner was amazing and I specially love their "Black Tiger Gambas Spaghetti", with tomato cubes and olives.

Spa: Oh My God! The Spa was amazing! You great to choose which type of massage that suits you and can even have a body peel and a bubble bath. The only thing to remember is to book your appointments early as the slots get taken up very quick. If you favour hot massages - try the hot stones or the hot stems. For those who want to have a nice body massage, you can try the Lomi Lomi.

Service: Service is 5 star to me, their staff are very friendly and warm and very helpful.

Room Tip: 1.Do request for the Matterhorn view and at a higher floor to an awesome view. 2.The spa & mass...

I visit Zermatt 2-3 times per year. Alpenhof is my 2014 favorite hotel near Sunegga (near as in a REALLY short walk). Having stayed next door at the National last year, I prefer the rooms at Alpenhof, although this is subjective (the family duplexes at National are great but the Alpenhof... It's just cozier).
The spa/pool at Alpenhof is far superior to most (although you do need to accept the hygienic nude euro-norm in the sauna/steam area; towels provided of course).
The welcoming ambiance and cozy lobby/bar area are just so. National may have an edge in the breakfast department, but Alpenhof's is very good, too. The hotel vibe is "mediumsize cozy family hotel" rather than "institutional standard Swiss 4star". Guests were a mellow mix of all sorts and ages, with no obviously dominant group. Our one room service dinner was great and delivered quickly. Did not eat at the hotel since I prefer the restaurants in Zermatt to any half board five-course gourmet dinner (esp with a 10-year old in tow). Also worth mentioning is the front desk staff; they were very helpful and professional from the point of reservation to departure, with all typical concierge services handled with aplomb during our stay. Unless you absolutely need a big 5star palace, I highly recommend the Alpenhof.

we arrived by car leaving it in the bottom town quick service up
the hotel is very laid back but smart the staff are fantastic and the food is excellent
the best thing is that you are near the sonny lift as if staying in town walking to the lifts would be a pain and it is 10 franks for any electric taxi lift
our room wasnt the best could just see the matterhorn but ok very clean i would ask for a better room if we went again the cervo is worth a look though
ski lockers as ever cramped

Room Tip: ask for the matterhorn view on left hand side looking at hotel from the front top floor if you can l...

We stood in one of the Fire & Ice rooms with full view on the Matterhorn. Room is perfectly comfortable and exeeded our requirements. Great breakfast, wonderful SPA and short walking distance to the center and Rothornbahn. We will be back as soon as we can.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 303, which has a marvellous view of The Matterhorn. So does room 302 etc.

Returning to Zermatt to ski for probably the last time, well I am sixty nine, my wife and I wanted to stay somewhere special.
The Alpenhof was near the sunnegga lift and looked like it fitted the bill. How wrong we were.We were given a room on the first floor, with a very poor view. The stairs leading to it were close to the bar. That evening the noise from the bar was intolerable .We anted to watch The Bridge on tv ,the band playing in the bar made this impossible. When we complained the manager/owner was quite rude. However we were told we could change rooms the next day. While we were out skiing our clothing etc was maved. When we returned we found we'd been moved to a room with half the wardrobe space and nowhere to put our skiing clothes. We were then moved to another room.
Our table in the dining room was the worst possible ,very close to the next table which had a number of different people using it.Some very much the worse for drink, others very loud. This was not what we expected in a four star hotel. The food was awful .The chef seemed to have bought a job lot of prawns which we seemed to have every other night.
In the end we had simply had enough and left a day early..Inghams rep was useless.

Room Tip: Avoid first floor rooms at the Bar end of the Hotel.

Quality hotel with excellent staff who made the skiing trip a memorable stay in Zermatt. Food although expensive is faultless and the service including the owners evening walk round to speak to every resident meant we will definitely be going back. After a hard days skiing to be able to relax in the sauna and pool and then by the fire with a glass of whiskey made this a definite 5 star hotel.
