We spent our holiday in two locations, Hotel Julen was the second destination after the first one in Stresa in Italy. Two hotels of similar rating yet the contrast in service and welcome was so vast and it is difficult not to make direct comparisons. The hotel Julen wrote to us before we set off asking for our arrival time so they could arrange to collect us from the station, which they did and we never saw our cases until we got to our room. The room, which we were upgraded to, ironically the exact same room number as the one in Stresa, was excellent with wonderful views from the balcony of the famous Matterhorn. The soft drinks and water in the mini bar were provided FOC and the water was replenished each day. The wi-fi was free and also, more important, FAST. We were also provided with slippers and gowns for using the pool and wellness facilities, which are fantastic. Expecting the usual small pool and gym with sauna we were pleasantly surprised to see what they had managed to build underground in their garden. A fabulous pool and wellness centre to rival anything I have seen before. A fantastic investment by the owners.Moving on to the dining experience, this was fine dining each evening, a 5 course dinner for just 35 CHF per night if booked on half board. That would hardly buy you a pizza in the town! The chef managed to deliver some really clever dishes that were all very tasty. Breakfasts also catered for all tastes with a big range of appetising foods to set you up for the day. All this and the personal involvement of the owners, particularly at dinner, where they would come around regularly to talk to their guests. Going home, we were sad to leave Zermatt, yet once we had packed we didn't see our cases again until we arrived at the station in the hotel's electric car. As my title suggests - first class service; that is missing from many hotels yet the owners of the Julen seem to want to go the extra mile to please their customers. Thanks to the Julen family and staff for making our stay so enjoyable.
