“Cute little hotel on the hill”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2012

I visited Zermatt with my parents and husband, and my mom reserved this cute hotel. It was a bit of a hike to get up to the hotel each night from the street--the walk is only five minutes, but it's a steep incline. Once there, however, it was very cozy. Each room is decorated very country-swiss, and your room key has a big wooden heart on it (so you can't lose it.) The view benefits from the hotel's elevation on the hill. My parents had the "honeymoon suite" on the top floor which was a larger room and the nicest view on the town below. Everything was very clean and modern inside the room. Breakfast was the standard European breakfast spread-- an array of meats, cheese, soft-boiled eggs, bread, yogurt and fruit. (Nothing too different or fancy). The hot chocolate was the one stand out. Enjoyed our stay here and would recommend.

Stayed here in February for a weeks skiing and couldn't be more happier with accommodation. Hotel has a main building and 2 individual log cabins in garden, one of which we stayed in. It was delightful!! Bathroom and living area were as you went through the door with a spiral staircase leading up to the bedroom. All that you imagine a log cabin to be!! Breakfast was served int the main hotel and the hosts couldn't be more pleasant, friendly or helpful!! Breakfast was typical continental fayre. The hotel is located a bout 2 mins walk from the main stret, Bahnhofstrasse (street brings you out @ Grampis, oppostite Post Hotel), close to many restaurants, shops etc although we like to get off the beaten track and try other restaurants on many of the hidden streets! Gornergrat train station and Sunnegga station are only about 5-8 mins away by foot for skiing purposes or you can always get the bus!! The hotel is equally stunning in the summer time with it's adundance of flowers!! Would highly recommend a stay here and will definitely be back next year for the skiing season again!

Room Tip: Pick one of the little log cabins/chalets if you've no issues with a tight, ladder like spiral s...

We enjoyed very much staying at "Hotel Romantica" while visiting Zermatt.

The hotel is a modest - but very well looked after - family run and with a great central location. Just 50 metres / 70 yards from the mainroad and hence with easy access to shopping and dining. Took us just 8 min. to walk from the trainstation - and although the last 50 metres are along a tiny steep alley - it was no problem to drag our luggage up same.(Don't use the route suggested by the electronic board by the trainstation - it's much longer and up/down).

The room was ordinary with a bit of a style mix and a bathroom dating quite a number of years back as to decor - but everything was absolutely clean and well looked after. The size iof the room was OK and typical European - only a huge oldfashioned TV put on a table in front the bed took up unnecessarily much room. Ought to be exchanged for a wall-hung flatscreen (or none at all, as who need a TV in this fantastic mountain scenery?). We were on first floor with a private flowerfilled balcony and view across the roofs of the surrounding buildings and a look towards the Eastern mountain ridge and the little garden below. The breakfast room was nice and tidy and the food well prepared. Buffet-style with boiled eggs, juices, dairy products, cold meat cuts, fresh fruits and various breads.

The hotel is family run with "grandma" looking after you and sitting by the entrace watching the property. The daugther is handling bookings and payments and manicuring the garden, which is very picturesque and pretty. Very friendly and accommodating people. The interior is indeed "romantic" - but maybe a bit too much... if you know what I mean. A bit oldfashioned with lots of little knickknacks and handknitted pieces - but all OK especially as everything is so clean and tidy. And the hotel is very picturesque with its traditional treecutting and flowery balconies and the pretty garden - lots of people stopped up for photoshots.

The only drawback was the lack of viewing Matterhorn directly from the hotel. The balconies are Eastwards turning and hence in shadow from mid afternoon. We realize that to have a Southturned balcony with a direct view of Matterhorn you need to choose a hotel east of the river. But there are always pros and cons - and the pros as to Hotel Romantica is the very close access to the mainstreet with all its activities and easy strolls to the station and starting points for the gondolas etc.

No doubt Hotel Romantica is a very good choice and value for money when it comes to Zermatt. You get what you can expect from a ***-property and are sure of a clean and well-run property with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. For most people it will, however, sound expensive - CHF 190.000 for a basic room - but no doubt this is due to the fact that the rate of exchange of the CHF has gone totally bananas! A few years ago the rate of exchange for 1 CHF was DKK 4.30. Now it is DKK 6.30 - a very hugh increase which reflects on each purchase in Switzerland and makes it one of the most expensive countries to visit, which is very sad. Hopefully, this will change in the future.

Kindest regards - PURPLE

Room Tip: Ask for a front room east-turning with balcony. The higher up the better view (lift available).

Lovely, quiet, friendly staff and, yes, romantic--this is a great place to stay in Zermatt. The hotel is a very short but steep walk off the main street and I appreciated having some distance between ourselves and the tourist crowds. We stayed four nights, long enough to get to know the very nice staff and relax in a comfortable room (with wireless internet). The bath was larger than others we've had in small hotels and B&B's in Switzerland, the balcony afforded a nice view, and the ground floor sitting room was available for reading and relaxing. Breakfasts were good. I was last there in 1997 and it was nice then, but it has been beautifully renovated since that time. I'll stay here again!

This lovely hotel is in a peaceful location just steps removed from the center of town - the location could not be better. The rooms are immaculate and comfortable. The staff is friendly and helpful, going out of their way, for example, to make brothy soup for a sick child. We could not have been happier with our stay

A quick phone call from the train station and we were picked up within minutes. This charming hotel was small, but cozy. Just off the main street, Romantica is central to everything including lifts, ski rental, shops, restaurants and night clubs. The staff is friendly and our room was clean, if a little on the small side. Breakfast was good (as far as continental breakfasts go) and the coffee was great.
I would definitely reccommend this hotel as it is great value, clean and central. In a town where everything costs an arm and a leg, this is a great find.
