Such a fun place to stay! It's a Swiss Madonna Inn! Every room is different - spacious, comfortable and quiet. The bar/lounge areas are wonderful. Small intimate areas off the bar itself where the chairs around the bar each have a cow bell to ring for service as the barman covers both the the outdoor as well as the indoor bar. Set within a minute's walk to the train station at the foot of Zermatt's main shopping street a better choice could not be made!

This quirky hotel is well located right by the train station but does not have any noise from trains in the evening.
It looks like a very large swiss wooden hotel. The reception allows you into a world of low ceilings adorned by many forms of carved wood, beams and stucco. Several large pieces of mineral weighing well in excess of 100 pounds are placed at the entrance, reception and bar area. The decor is a little bit heavy with many armchairs and sofas around several fake fireplaces framed by woodwork on the first floor. There is one bar area which looks like a study with wood shelving, mice armchairs, coffee table and various very male decorative items. This is adjacent to a game/pool room.
This first floor also has a large room for receptions and a room decorated by angels on the wall. There is probably a story behind it but it looks very quirky at first glance.
The elevator is vey small and oprates slowly between the 3 floors of the hotel.
The rooms are european in size although they do have a little sitting area which gives it a little more room. Our room gave on to the back if the hotel over a tennis court and parking lot. The view of the mountains in the distance is ver pleasant.
The bed was comfortable and was covered by a duvet. The head board was a painting which carried a link to the ceiling over the bed covered by a painting in the same style. Unusual but not completely ugly. Apparently, all the rooms have different decors. The bathroom walls and floor was covered by marble tiles of beige, flesh, slightly orange and grey veins. This, combined with double sinks, a tub with air jets, bidet, plenty of hot water pressure and goid lighting made this a very nice room.
A robe and slippers along with make-up mirror and dryer were also provided.
There is a nice pool and workout area which we did not try.
The room has a safe. The wifi signal was not strong and did not have much capacity although it eventually carried e-mails to destination.
The staff were pleasant and helpful.
I liKe this hotel but it is reminiscent of a hunting lodge of a quirky, wealthy man with too much money on his hands. This hotel cost a fortune to build.
I liked it more than my wife.
We would return at the right price.

Centrally located, charming, old world hotel in Zermatt. Large comfortable room with a jacuzzi. Walkable distance to the town and tram to the Matterhorn. Beautiful alpine views. Only ate breakfast here and it was a fine buffet. It was my favorite stop on my tour of Switzerland.

Room Tip: Ask for a Matterhorn view room.

I am vegetarian, and I have notified the hotel quite some time in advance that I am vegetarian. And still they were not prepared - instead of a 5 course menu that I have paid for I got a dish with steamed vegetables. One plate! That is it. And the next day, after I complained, they served me a salad. They explicitly said it was vegetarian, and while eating it I have found pieces of pork in it. No kidding. To me this is completely disrespectful. They do not care if you like the place or not. They do not care what your experience is. They only care if your payment for the hotel goes through (and it frequently does not because of their poor internet connection!!!!)

And unfortunately, this business model still works because the hotel is nicely located near the train station and close to lifts.

About rooms - I had a very large room, unlike my colleagues who constantly complained that they had no internet access in rooms and had very small rooms. BUT my room had wood panels as part of decoration that clearly had burn traces. It is NOT nice to sleep in a room that bears the signs that this place was on fire. That is not to mention leopard print curtains and elevator panels, in leopard print with pink again.

If you have issues with wifi in the hotel and ask a receptionist or hotel manager for help, they tell you "NOT MY PROBLEM", word to word. Why would anyone go again to such a place? I don't know.

Room Tip: Don't! Simply chose another hotel!

Dear Madam

We are very sorry that you didn't get the vegetarian dishes in our restaurant.
We will speak with our head waiter and his team to take better care of special requests.
Please accept our sincere apologies.

The wood you find all over in the Hotel is old larch and very difficult to get.
The owner family bought old houses and re-used the wood in the hotel. It's burned in a
natural way by the sun.

You stayed with us middle of March 2014 with a seminary. The feedback of the organizer was enthusiastic and they plan to organize another Event with us in the future.

One again, we are sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay with us.

Kind regards,
Christina Perren, from the owners' Family

We ( 2 adults, 2 teenagers) stayed at The Alex this week for 4 nights for a short ski break. Our train arrived quite late but the charming Allesandro ( who is a longstanding member of the hotel team) was there to meet us and drive us in his electric buggy to the hotel ( all of a few hundred yards!). We got to our rooms to find sandwiches provided as we'd missed supper. All very gratefully received after a tiring journey.

Each morning we were greeted at breakfast by the ever smiling Allessandro ( another one!) who was also our waiter at dinner each evening. All the staff were impeccably polite and helpful throughout our stay.

We were staying on a half board basis which meant dining from a set menu each evening- not exactly a hardship as the food was so delicious but a bit confusing on the first night before we realised that simple substitutions could be made, especially for the children if they found the dishes a little complicated.

The swimming pool is divine but choose your time carefully. We found that a late dip at about 7pm worked best as obviously, the families with younger children made the most of the facility in the early evening- busy! Oh and did I mention the indoor tennis court, squash court and gym! The place is a veritable tardis!!

Don't be put off by the decor- it is a bit eclectic but far from being faded ( our experience with similar looking hotels) every amenity was spotless and everything that needed to be modern, like the bathrooms, was.

We're checking the kids' holiday dates for next year already although with their high rate of return guests, we may already be too late. We wouldn't hesitate to stay again in the future.

Room Tip: Ask for a Matterhorn view- we had to crouch down to see the sky as our room was in the eaves!

We stayed a week at the Hotel Alex during a brilliant skiing trip in February. The service is first class and the ambience lovely. The spa and pool are wonderful and bar area is quirky but comfortable. It's location is great because it is so central and a very short walk to the train station and the Gornagratt. It is definitely a family orientated hotel rather than a couples hotel. They have a great service that sends your luggage to the airport from the hotel and checks it on to your flight, which makes the train journey to the airport much less stressful. Some of the rooms and bathrooms are in need of updating, but are comfortable and clean. They don't have tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms which would have been nice to come back to after a day's skiing. The ski room is good and the lockers spacious. We very much enjoyed our stay.
