“January Skiing - Our Favourite Hotel”
Reviewed 3 February 2013

Our fourth stay at this hotel and yet again we were delighted at our experience. Having always used an agent to book with we dealt directly with the hotel who were able to offer a better deal financially (booked lift pass and ski hire through them) as well as providing far more flexibility in terms of travel days. The petit chalet rooms are superb. Beautifully done out and with fantastic views. The service from every member of staff was friendly and professional. The food from their set menu was exceptional as was the breakfast buffet. The wine cellar also provided a comprehensive and variably priced selection of fantastic swiss wines. Be sure to say hello to the wonderfull hosts Sebastian and Anna on your arrival as they will make your stay a memorable one.

Dear „Ruth L“

Thank you very much for having taken the time to write a nice comment about your stay at the Chalet Hotel Schönegg in Zermatt!

It is often the case, that our guests book their holiday trough an agency. The advantage is, everything is booked and organised. On the other hand you will never get a room cheaper then booking on our website.

Thank you fort your compliments. Our new wing called „Petit Chalet“ has a big success. We are very happy about that. But the rooms in the traditional part are as well on a high quality. And in terms of view they offer as well a gorgeous view over Zermatt.

We are indeed very proud about our wine cellar. Nice, that you enjoyed our wines!

Thank you very much fort he compliments! My sister and myself we try everyday our best in order to fulfil all our guest’s wishes. We are looking forward to your next vacation. And we hope to see you for your 20th wedding anniversary…;)

Best regards Anna & Sebastian Metry

This was our first stay in Zermatt and we fortunately chose the Schonegg hotel on the basis of previous reviews and proximity of access to the ski slopes. The hotel was fantastic, we were greeted warmly and shown to our lovely spacious room with views across the valley. The room was immaculately maintained throughout our stay. We were on a half board basis and enjoyed a good breakfast selection which set us up for our days on the slopes. The evening meals were superb, we were always given the option of an alternative if any item on the menu did not appeal to us. The staff were all attentive and helpful, and the visit from the family who own the hotel at dinner each evening was a nice touch.
We would always choose this hotel when we return to Zermatt, either for another skiing holiday or to walk in the summer.

Our great position brings this unique view over Zermatt. Very nice, that you mentioned it.
The kitchen staff tries very hard to deliver the best food to our guest. They are very happy about your compliments!

It was a pleasure to meet you in our hotel and we do look forward to welcoming you soon back in Zermatt.

All the best to you, your hosts

My three adult children and I stayed at the Schoenegg in January 2013. We were delighted with the hotel, with its young, friendly and intelligent staff, its comfortable and charming rustic internal decor, its marvellous food (the haute cuisine half-board very memorable) and its fabulous position in the valley; eating breakfast you can gaze at the Matterhorn, and you are not hurried away from your table. It was a week of superlatives for us. The hotel scores full marks for peace (I sat for hours wrapped up on my balcony listening to the sound of the river below us in the valley) and convenience - you can reach lower Zermatt in minutes via a lift which leads into a fascinating gothic tunnel in the rock. You are right near the Sunnegga train which leads to the beginners' slopes and the grand beauties of the Rothorn.

Hi Oxfordiana
Thank you very much for your nice comment on TripAdvisor. Our staff is very happy about your mention! We always print all comments out and show them to our employees. This keeps our employees motivated. We always try our best to make our guest’s stay as relaxing and enjoyable as possible. Of course peace is a very important factor for this. Our situation, above from Zermatt with a bright view over Zermatt and a open view to the Matterhorn is as well a big contribution for this calm! And thank to our own elevator and tunnel every guest can reach the center of Zermatt in a few minutes only. Train station, ski lifts or bus stops are right in front of the entrance.

Yours sincerely
Sebastian & Anna Metry

This was my sixth stay in Zermatt since 2007 and I am rating the Chalet Hotel Schonegg versus previous experience at the Alex Hotel (two stays), Antares, Hotel Sonne and Hotel Julen. Of these, the hotel I would most likely return to would be the Schonegg. We were late in booking our New Year ski break (only about six weeks prior) and chose the Schonegg principally on account of availability in the four star plus hotel category (of which there are about 15 or so in Zermatt). The only room class available was a junior suite which we booked on a half board basis.

Room (110): This was located in the newer “chalet” wing of the hotel completed two years ago. Comfortably sized with ample storage space, private terrace with direct Matterhorn views, lounge area with fireplace (fire was rebuilt each day by room service) and well-appointed bathroom with separate bath and large shower. Decoration was modern, tasteful and warm with pleasant and dimmable lighting. From the website we noticed that the double bed had two single duvets (as is often the case in Switzerland/Austria/Germany) and we asked for a double duvet which was kindly arranged for us before arrival by the reservations team (Anna). The housekeeping lady kept the room in immaculate condition and provided a nightly turndown service with complete change of towels/bathroom refresh.

Dining: We selected the half board option which is excellent value (CHF45 per person per day) for the quality of food provided. Dinner consisted of beautifully presented five course meals with an interesting variation of dishes across our week’s stay. Each evening the hotel owner (Sebastian) walked the dining room to greet guests during dinner (as is common practice with Zermatt family run hotels) and on our first evening we requested if we could have a window table for the rest of our stay which was duly arranged for us.

Location: Zermatt is clearly not a purpose-built ski resort and hence with the exception of a few hotels located on the mountain, is not known for ski-in, ski-out accommodation. However, the Schonegg has the benefit of being located just beyond the end of the piste and can easily be reached on skis. Furthermore, the tunnel entrance to the hotel is conveniently close to the Sunegga Express lift for quick access to the slopes each morning. The position of the hotel affords excellent views of the village and Matterhorn from the guest rooms and the dining room, but is also no more than ten minutes’ walk to the Gornergrat railway and another few minutes to the centre of the village.

Spa area: The Schonegg does not have a swimming pool (although we did not enquire as to whether they could arrange access to one). The Alex Hotel and Hotel Sonne do have very nice pools. However, the lower of the two Jacuzzi bubble baths has direct views of the Matterhorn, plus there is a (small but never very busy) steam room and sauna. All in all, quite sufficient and well-appointed relaxation area to reheat after the slopes. Massages were available on request.

Our stay at the Schonegg contributed significantly to a great ski break and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Sebastian, Anna and their team for a wonderful experience.

Dear Alexander
Thank you very much for your nice comment! We are very glad, that you enjoyed your stay in our hotel. We are as well very glad, that you liked your Juniorsuite with this modern decoration in our new building “Petit Chalet”. We always try our best to fulfil all desires from our clientele. As long as it is possible we arrange it.
We are as well very happy with our kitchen. They are doing a great job. Your mention here on TripAdvisor means a lot to our “chef team”. Thank you! Ski in and out is not common at all in Zermatt. We are very lucky to be part to this small selection. In terms of the view we are in a very fortunate position!
We are looking forward to welcoming you soon again in our establishment!!

Best regards Sebastian & Anna

We stayed at the Chalet Hotel Schoenegg in September 2012 for 9 nights.
We were met at the railway station in Zermatt by the hotels porter and taken by their electric taxi to the hotel.
The Chalet Hotel Schoenegg stands on an elevated position above the village of Zermatt giving fantastic panoramic views over the village.
There are two entrances to the hotel, the lower entrance is from the village, you enter through a tunnel of ever changing coloured lights and music playing to a lift which takes you direct to the hotels reception area. The second entrance is from a path which leads up from the village, approximately 5-10 minutes walk.
Our room was very clean, quiet large and well furnished. The room was well lit with natural light from large windows, on opening the balcony door you were met with an awe inspiring view of the Matterhorn.
The room was cleaned daily with fresh towels twice a day.
All the staff of the hotel were polite and friendly, always helpful, making sure your stay was something special.
The dinning room was well presented again with beautiful views of the Matterhorn and the village below. The breakfast consisted of a hot and cold buffet - scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, bacon, cereals, fruits, breads, rolls, cheeses, meats, preserves, juices, teas and coffee.
The evening meal was of 5 courses, excellent and presentation again second to none. The waitress and waiters were very attentive, nothing was to much trouble for them and you never felt rushed.
On the morning of departure, we had to leave exceptionally early at 5:45am although not expecting a breakfast the night porter was waiting with breakfast for us before taking us down to the train station by electric taxi.

Walking in this area is second to none and the views are stunning. The village of Zermatt has many shops and restaurants. The cable cars and railway open-up a vast area of walking trails.

Overall this is by far the best hotel which we have stayed in over the years in Switzerland.

David and Amanda Heaven, South Wales.

Your pointed out the fact of the natural light in the rooms. Thank to our great position, we are very lucky to have a lot of sun and to have this free view over Zermatt and this astonished view to the Matterhorn.
We are happy, that you liked the changing colors in our tunnel. It makes one feel like in a "James Bond" movie...

As well our staff always tries to fulfill the desires of our clients. If they reach this with a friendly and nice attitude, everybody is enchant. At least I hope you were.

Wonderful hotel, just stunning. We were picked up and driven back to the train statin on checkout - all included in price. On checkin we were upgraded and had a room with fantastic views out to the Matterhorn. Sitting on our balcony sipping drinks watching the sun rise over the matterhorn was just amazing. The room was spacious, and very comfortable, large bathroom. The breakfast at this hotel, I'd say was the best from all our hotel stays over europe. Staff were excellent and helpful. Just love this hotel. Highly recommended.
