“Great service in ideal skiing location in Zermatt”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2011

Arranged a trip over New Years Eve for 3 days in Zermatt. Hotel staff very accommodating for any special request. On arrival from train station, you contact the hotel from the central phone and they come and pick you up in an electric car, only about 10 minutes wait. They also arrange to return you back. We arrived early in the morning, so they held luggage and then was in the room when we checked back later.

Location is a bit on the far end of Zermatt (about 15-20 minutes walk to city centre), but only a 5 minute walk to the ideal ski lift up to Klein Matterhorn. Hotel web-site gives directions to nearest ski rental location.

Hotel food was very good, although a couple of things not to my personal liking but cooked very well. We had half-board arrangements, so breakfast/dinner was included each day. New Years Eve dinner was an additional add-on surcharge, but started as early as 7pm and continued to 11:30pm, including lobster, sushi, chateaubriand/roast beef, and a whole slew of other courses. Desserts were tasty but light after usually heavy meals. Breakfast was standard savory German-speaking country fare: various breads, cheeses, hams/salamis, with scrambled eggs and not-so-crispy bacon. No sweet rolls/croissants, but I'm familiar with this. Good selection of wines, including some local Swiss white/red wines (Johannisberg white and another pinot noir selection were nice light options for a late meal).

Hotel room was reasonable size, small bathroom with shower, but sink/prep area was in the main area of the room. Hotel provided comfy duvets, thick to handle any cold air, but the room temperature was very toasty so little need for the thick duvet. Hotel just recently added a wellness/sauna area in December (open daily 3pm-8pm)....it is a 10-step walk from the front door to an elevator to take you down to the entrance. Usage is free to all hotel guests, but add-ons charge for massages and other treatments. Sauna area has whirlpool (lukewarm, not hot, but still good), dry sauna, bio-sauna, wet sauna, feet whirlpool, showers, and "cold water" dump area (for an invigorating eye-opening experience after getting all warmed up). Area was very clean and nice-looking but off-limits for children as it is co-ed and clothing-optional (most users were naked).

Hotel staff are extremely friendly, very accommodating and able to answer any question. They worked with me to arrange a taxi service from hotel down to Visp, as we had to catch a 6am train for Geneva before the public trains started at 7am. Checkout is night before you leave and no issues with the final bill.

A very good location and a great host for a stay over the New Year.

We have just had a very pleasant 2 night stay at the Hemizeus, staying in the hotel rather than an appartment. The room was slightly small as was the bathroom, but both were adequate, my main problem with the hotel, hence only 3 stars, was that I found the bed very uncomfortable, the sheet was rough and had been washed so often that it had worn through and had a hole, the mattress was very hard, the pillow gave inadequate support and the mattress protector was just horribly bumpy!
The staff were excellent, however. There had been a mix up with our booking via Expedia but they sorted it out for us. The best meal of our 4 night stay in Switzerland was had here, I wish we had eaten here both nights. Transport to and from the station was included in the room rate, and was very efficient. It was a 15 min walk into the centre of Zermatt, not too far, there is also a bus stop nearby. We got a taxi back one evening at the night time rate - very expensive, and that was a shared taxi (26 CHF for a 10 min ride)
I liked the hotel very much, but I wouldn't stay here again because of the bed (yes I am fussy but I get a migraine if I can't sleep) It is a shame as everything else was so good.

Amazing location on the outskirts of town, quiet, you can still walk to all restaurants, cozy family atmosphere, yet private. Room had kitchen to cook at home (nice with the expensive restaurants) and breakfasts were great (eggs, meats, cereal, yogurt, granola, etc). Sauna rocked--best suana ever (steam sauna with eucalyptus). Pick up from train station and excellent service. Will definitely stay again.

What a great hotel with a fantastic restaurant! We stayed for 3 nights and that was the perfect amount of time to devote to Zermatt's incredible sights. The hotel is a 15-20 minute walk from the main village and sits on a lovely meadow with a spectacular view of the Matterhorn. The location could not be better! We had a nice double room with a balcony view of the Matterhorn that was simply breathtaking. The Italian family that run the hotel are wonderful people who are always there to help. The restaurant serves up mouth-watering steaks, fish and pasta. Try the Roasted Perch Filets or the Argentian Steak. Wonderful food!! Ask for Dimitri to be your waiter. He is super nice and speaks english quite well. With a an on-site restaurant that was so good, there was no need to walk down the hill to the main village for dinner. The hotel is also very close to the Klein Matterhorn lift. The hotel will pick you up at the main train station and take you up to their spectacular location. You will be blown away by the view!

After an hour and a half flight to Geneva from Liverpool & a 3.5hrs train journey we finally arrived at Zermatt train station - unfortunatly it was raining and trying to snow. There was an exciting vibe in the air the street seemed quite lively and was all light up by the outdoor restaurants and shops neon lights....
We took a taxi from outside the station to Hemizeus Aparthotel took about 15mins and was all up hill so it was a good job we invested in the pricey 20CHF it cost. It was dark by this time and our first visit to Zermatt so it was a price that needed to be paid.
Hotel was well postioned to the outside of the main street area down a quiet road close to the river. No one was there to greet us on reception but a nice welcome note and our room key was left. We found our room very easily and was very happy with it. We had booked a studio and requested a room with a view...... I have never been more satisfied with a room with a view. The side of our box room was glass with a small balcony looking out onto the valley and a clear undisturbed view of the Matterhorn - It really was breathtaking. You could lie in bed for hours starring out of the window.
There was a large wardrobe a small dining table and a kitchen unit. All in great working order. The bathroom consisted of a small shower a toilet and a basin, it was very small but it did the job! I think we were the only ones staying in the hotel at this time as it was so quiet! There was a small living room downstairs and a mini bar with beers and cold drinks to help yourself & just note down what you'd took - unbelievably honest system they had going on here....
We never tried the food at the hotel, it didnt seem to be open as it was so quiet. The main street was only a 15min walk in. Which had everything you could think of. The nearest lift (Matterhorn express, klein matterhorn) was only 7mins away.
We took a 3 day peak pass costing 169CHF to use all the lifts open. This was useful as we used them alot visiting the glacier palace and upto the foot of the matterhorn and walked back to Zermatt calling in mountain huts along the way.... This pass also included the Gongrat cog wheel train which the views from the top were amazing!
We took a day of skiing also paying an add on of 28CHF onto the peak pass to use the ski lift. This was a bit of a fright really only being beginner level and were told we'd be fine.... Oh my god this was glacier skiing and boy was it a steep hill. We only went down once and that was a scary experience! Not recommended for beginners or novice in summer, ha. Ski hire was reasonable about £30 for everything for the day!
We also had planned to climb the Breighthorn when here at Zermatt; this was our main reason for visiting. Once all booked & excited to climb (on a group climb costing 185CHF pp) the Alpine centre let us down saying they wouldnt take just two of us up for that price and tried to charge us 290CHF pp. We gave it a miss as we thought it was over priced! Very disappointed though.... Anyone wanting to climb & returning this winter or next please let us know....... Also a cheap way of climbing Alpine peaks would be appriciated, ha....

Had an excellent fun week in Zermatt would defintley return during the winter..... and once our skiing has improved, ha!

We stayed 3 nights here and thoroughly enjoyed our time in Zermatt. The room was very comfortable and quite spacious. Balcony we had was one of the few that did not have a view of the Matterhorn, but it still had a nice snow landscape to look at. Good to be able to step outside for fresh air. The small kitchen was handy, however the restaurant served excellent food for dinner. The highlight each day was the fabulous breakfast. Cooked eggs, bacon, variety of breads, jams, meat, cheeses, cereal, lovely fruit salad, juices, tea, coffee - with excellent friendly staff at all times ensuring every need was met and you were comfortable. The view from the breakfast room was breathtaking. I'll attach a photo. Easy walk to ski lift. We hired our clothing and equipment at the hire shop adjacent to the lift. They were very helpful and reasonable for Ski prices.

The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from the town, and 8 min walk to one of the Ski Lifts - Matterhorn Express. There is a free E-bus 1 min from the hotel, but if you want to hit the snow early (opens about 0830), the bus is usually full and it is better to take the walk. The hotel is quite old-fashion, but is clean and functionally. I found it not so much value for money, but I guess the accomondation overall in Zermatt is expensive. Please, be aware that there is a lot of germans visiting this hotel, so don't be surprised if you find naked men, women or children in the sauna. The sauna is old, weared and crowded, so if you appreaciate delicate sauna and relax areas, choose another hotel. If you value quitet and comfortable rooms, with closeness to the skislopes and skilifts, Hemizues should be on your list.
