“Comfortable, Not Fancy, Great Views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2010

I selected the Hotel Bristol because it offered well-priced suites with Matterhorn views. I was not disappointed - it is a very comfortable hotel in a convenient Zermatt location. My suite was one large room with a sitting area and a long, narrow balcony with an excellent view of the Matterhorn. You can lie in bed and gaze at the Matterhorn, which is endlessly fascinating. The hotel is not fancy and a bit rustic. Hallways are dark and the bathrooms could use updating. The staff was friendly and efficient and helpful when asked for assistance. I was in Zermatt for summer hiking, and it's a nice 10-15 minute walk to the train or ski lifts into the mountains. It's also just a short walk to the main area where most shops and restaurants are located, but adjacent to the hotel is a small grocery store and there are several pretty good restaurants only a few steps away. Still, the location is quiet and away from the "nightlife" of Zermatt, so you can be assured of a good sleep especially on the Matterhorn side of the building. There is also a decent restaurant in the hotel, but it looked like only full board guests were dining there most nights. Breakfast is nothing special. Other hotels I've used in Zermatt provide more lavish breakfast choices, but Bristol's was sufficient. I recommend this hotel for anyone wanting a nice, not too fancy but pleasant experience.

We had a great time in Zermatt while staying at Hotel Bristol. The hotel staff were friendly, and accommodating. The picked us up at the train station and dropped us off when we were leaving. The driver carried our bags up and down the stairs. They even provided a bag of ice when my wife banged up her leg while skiing.

We requested and received a room with a view of the Matterhorn, which was very nice to look out each morning and gauge the weather conditions up on the mountain, but I would probably pass next time on the room with the view in exchange for a lower price or a larger room.

A nice variety of breakfast items are available, from cheeses, breads, croissants, fruits, yogurts, eggs, sausage, cereals, juices, pancakes(crepes?), more than enough to have a big breakfast each day before skiing.

The deal with the ski shop in the building is currently 20% off rentals and 10% off purchases if you are a hotel guest and the staff there are also very accommodating. Ski and boot storage is easily accessible from a door right off the street.

Getting to the gondolas was a little challenging, as it is just a little too far uphill to walk, especially in ski boots. If you are carrying skis, walk down the stairs and across the river to the green bus, as you cannot take skis on the red bus. Taxis are unnecessary.

Visit Papperla Pub around the corner for a few drinks post skiing - always a party.

Good location, modest rooms, well worth it to get a room with Matterhorn view...breathtaking! JUST DONT BUY YOUR LIFT TICKET THERE, I bought a 3 day pass and lost it the first day on the slopes, and the mountain could not cancel it and issue me with a new one even though i had the receipt!! The hotel could have done it, if they kept better records of the tickets they sold(the receipt i got was not for my ticket ) To be safe buy the ticket at the mountain, then you can spend your money on apreski fondue rather than a second ticket!
p.s.
Breakfast is crap, good idea to make a sammy and save it for the slopes :)

hi,

stayed in this hotel for 1 night. quite a distance from train station, though a pick up can be arranged if you inform the hotel in advance.

room was nice and big with a blocked partial view of Matterhorn mountain from the balcony. management was nice as they gave me a free upgrade to junior suite and hence had a big balcony from where the mountain was visible.

bathroom was big and nice with a bath tub .
bed and pillow were awesome, loved them.
No coffee machine in the room.

zermatt in summers is a busy place due to skiers coming from all over the place and hence i believe hotels here are little expensive. buffet breakfast was standard nothing exceptional. didnt tried the restaurant though.

asked the hotel guys for a drop back to station and they asked me for 10 CHF :(

overall experience with the hotel was good, no complains as such.

I've been in Bristol only for a night, but my impressions are only good.
special note - the manager Francis hospitality and responsiveness. when we just arrived there - it was a beautiful sunny day and Francis told us:
"Guys, you should faster go to you room and prepare you equipment shortly to catch the good weather. we will loose half an hour to make a formal check in, so let's do it next morning. now, here is your keys :)"
he also gave us 2 ski-passes and let to pay for all next morning. you know, i was pleasantly surprised by such a friendly behaviour. the rooms was ok and the break fast was very ample and tasty (especially the variety of cheeses).

location - in the centre, but quiet enough.

i wish all the best to the hotel staff and recommend it to TA members.

Having just returned from a fantastic Xmas and New Year 2008 in Zermatt, I wanted to say how wonderful the Hotel Bristol is. The staff are lovely, the hotel really clean and well kept, excellent facilities, great position and not forgetting the glorious 5 course evening meals (if you book half board). The Manager was fab and made a real personal effort to ensure that all his guests had a great holiday, even down to charging our mobile phone for us as we forgot the charger! Would definately go back again...

  • Liked — Great food, fab location
  • Disliked — Nothing!

Three of us stayed at the Bristol for a 2 day 1 night stay. We had a wonderful stay in one of the mini-suites. The view of the Matterhorn was nice. Everything about the hotel is what you would expect at a Swiss resort...relaxed, clean, and fun. The hotel staff treated us like guests in a private home and after checking out, allowed us to us to use the hotel as a meeting point. Our room was spotless and the typical Swiss buffet breakfast was nice.

The hotel was across the river from the church and shopping and about 900 meters from the arial tram to Glacier Paradise. The walk back to the train station was a pleasant walk with plenty to see an do on the way. Will stay here again.

  • Liked — The staff , the view, and location
  • Disliked — hardwood floors were slick :)
