Reviewed 11 August 2012

I stayed at the Hotel Rex for 5 nights between 06/08/2012 - 11/08/2012 and this is the third time I have used this hotel during my numerous visits to Zermatt, Switzerland.

This trip was the first time I have not been given a room with a balcony at the Rex which was disappointing but the room I was allocated was large with a small kitchen area, acres of wardrobe space, a seating area and overall was very nice with a pleasant view of the garden and surrounding hotels.

Complimentary Wifi is provided although after the first 3 days I found it to be very slow and unreliable. I am guessing this was a one off network issue rather than the usual Wifi service. A PC with Internet access for guest use is provided in the reception/lounge area (which is a really nice area of the hotel to spend time in) although this was also quite slow.

The hotel has a spa suite which is great to use after a day of hiking and consists of a swimming pool, sauna, steam room, a massive jacuzzi, a number of showers (towels provided), sun loungers and excellent changing room facilities. Bathrobes and slippers are provided in your room.

The breakfast is terrific with friendly and helpful staff and a good selection of breads, cereals, fruit, meats and cheeses. Not a huge amount of hot food is available which is not surprising given this is a european hotel. Some of the best scrambled egg I have tasted together with baked beans (not together you understand) is provided and toast can be made. A full range of fruit juices, teas and coffee is served. The hotel does not have a restaurant but there is plenty of choice in the town.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Hotel Rex although not as seamless as my previous two visits but would highly recommend this establishment.

Zermatt itself is one of the most beautiful places I have visited and if you like hiking the trails are almost endless. Zermatt and Switzerland as a whole is not cheap but if you can accept this aspect, in my opinion, you are unlikely to find a country which offers such a diverse range of scenary/activities coupled with very friendly and intelligent people but then again I have been visiting Switzerland for years so am probably biased.

We stayed here for a couple of nights in August 2011, it was their quiet time I believe, not too many people staying at this time. Staff were very friendly and helpfull, nothing was too much trouble. Our room faced away from the Matterhorn, but this wasnt a priority for us. The room was of a good size, plenty big enough, clean and tidy, good facilities. It was easy to get around the town, plenty of shops nearby. Lots of walks close as well. Highly reccommend this hotel, would stay here again no problems.

Room Tip: If you want a view of the Matterhorn , ask when booking.

We stayed at the Hotel Rex for a week's ski-ing after reading good reviews on Tripadvisor and it certainly lives up to its reputation. Check-in was quick, friendly and efficient. Our superior twin room on the second floor had perfect view of the Matterhorn and was spotlessly clean. Staff were accommodating and friendly and unfazed by our request for summer duvets!
We used the spa area most days although it tended to busy with children. Having stayed in other accommodation in Zermatt in 2010 and 2011, I would certainly recommend the Hotel Rex.

My wife and I stayed here as part of a package holiday and we chose it as a result of TripAdvisor recommendations - it did not disappoint. It is located on the edge of the main centre of the town in a quiet location, but within easy walking distance of everything. The hotel is modern and nicely decorated throughout. Our balcony room was very well appointed and comfortable and kept spotlessly clean throughout our stay. The staff in the hotel were extremely courteous, friendly and helpful.

We made use of the extremely nice spa downstairs - which consists of a good sized swimming pool, jacuzzi, several sauna rooms etc. - on several occasions . A solarium is also available for a modest fee (coin operated sunbed).

If I had to criticise we would say that we found breakfast choice a little limited as it is strictly continental in nature - don't expect much in the way of cooked. But having been to Switzerland before it is apparent that this is just the way the Swiss have breakfast, and not really a reflection on the hotel. But if you're British you might pine for a few rashers of bacon and a fried egg or two. Boiled eggs are available but the method of cooking them, in a large, covered bowl filled with some sort of sand which is kept heated, is less than successful and results them being hardly cooked at all. Perhaps this is the Swiss way too? Having said that, when my wife asked for harder boiled ones these were happily provided by the staff on every request, so what more can you ask?

I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone and would gladly stay there again. If you manage to have a bad stay here then you're either very unlucky indeed or impossible to please.

Room Tip: Avoid the top two floors unless you don't mind stairs as the lift doesn't go up there.

Staying at the Rex came via a personal recommendation, and it did not disappoint. Our room had a fantastic view of the Matterhorn, with a balcony space adequate for two to sit comfortably. We took advantage of the pool area, and although small, was not used by other guests, so there was plenty of room. The breakfast was nice too, and the staff were friendly and helpful. This hotel is within easy walking distance to other restaurants and bars and only a few minutes from rail station. We look forward to a return trip soon, and will definitely book this hotel.

We throughout enjoyed our stay in this owner-managed hotel. It's located in a quieter zone, but steps from everything. We had room 502, one of two rooms under the roof (the last two floors without a lift, but it was worth climbing up) with a fantastic view over the roofs of the village to the splendid Matterhorn. Our balcony had comfortable deck chairs. The room was large with two beds, two lounge chairs and a desk (complimentary internet). There is plenty of storage room available.
Breakfast buffet was very nice and with fresh products, a good start to a day of hiking.
We did not use the pool area, but had a look at it and it was nice and inviting.
Staff at reception as well as at breakfast was very friendly and helpful, the owners have been present almost all the time and took very good care of us.
Due to divisions and additions to the building. the floor plan is somewhat confusing, so if you need connecting rooms or near rooms, book accordingly to avoid the other party being in another tract of the building.

Room Tip: Room 502 has a perfect view of the Matterhorn, but as it is under the roof, the last two floors are...
