We last visited The Sonne about 18 years ago, and when we had the opportunity to make a very quick trip to Zermatt, we thought we would like to go back. We could only stay for 2 nights, and the online booking system wouldn't allow such a short stay - this might be something they should think about changing, particularly in the quieter season. I emailed them, and got a very swift answer with an offer of two rooms for my husband and myself, and our grown up son who was with us.
From the moment we arrived at the station, the staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. The elder Forsters came to say hello to us, and thought they might remember my husband, which we didn't think could really be possible, but it was a nice thought. We certainly remembered them, and their son, Alexander is clearly following in his parent's footsteps when it comes to hospitality.
The restaurant was almost unchanged, and the format of the 5 course dinner the same. The food and service was excellent. We were trying to decide between two 'Petit Arvine' wines, and the waiter recommended the cheaper one, which doesn't often happen! The breakfast buffet had lots of choices - the only thing not quite so good was the quality of the fruit juice.
The hotel have added a swimming pool and a new wing of rooms. The pool was lovely - immaculately kept - not huge, but it was possible to have a proper swim. The whole area is very attractive, with a mediterranean scene painted on one wall, and lots of windows, so very light. There are two jacuzzis - one inside in a large bay window, and one outside, with an icy grotto above you. We did not try the 'Wellness' area or the Beauty treatments on offer.
There is a ski and boot room, with heated racks for boots, and the hotel provides a shuttle service to the lifts in the morning - a new service since we last visited, and much appreciated.
Our rooms were in the older wing, but were spotlessly clean, with good carpets, curtains etc., but did look slightly dated, as did the bathrooms (but again, spotlessly clean). We thought the beds were also showing their age, as they were very firm. The pillows and duvets were not the lovely light, fluffy ones you normally get in Switzerland - the pillows were solid and lumpy and the duvet quite heavy - in need of updating, we thought.
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip down memory lane, and would certainly recommend the Sonne to friends. We are often not far away from Zermatt, and intend to make more short visits there, and will definitely go back to The Sonne, but I think I would ask to try one of the newer rooms next time.
