“One of the best hotel experiences I have...”
Reviewed 13 September 2010

One of the best hotel experiences I have had. Very interesting hotel design, fusing traditional and modern. Beautiful hotel in a beautiful setting. Very helpful and gracious staff. Very nice whirlpool and spa. Very nice public areas for lounging and for the breakfast which is included with the room. The hotel can pick you up at the train station. Hotel location is very convenient to a variety of Zermatt features. Was there during shoulder season and got a very nice double for about $220, though rates may usually be higher. Would be a great honeymoon hotel. Stay there if the rates allow you to! Only complaint would be too soft pillows.

We stayed for one week in the “Coeur des Alpes” in August 2010.

Location:

The hotel is located at the end of the main street through Zermatt, up on a hill. It takes 10-12 minutes to walk from the train station (train to and from Täsch), to the Gornergrat train (just opposite of the train station), to the train & cabins to Sunegga/Rothorn and 2 minutes to the cabins going to Schwarzsee. The hotel offers to pick you up from and bring you down to the train station when you arrive and depart, you can use the toll-free phone at the train station to ring them on arrival.

Hotel & Room:

Because of its location high up on the hill, be aware that the only way to enter the hotel is walking through a small tunnel and using the elevator afterwards. There is no other possibility like steps or a separate entrance without elevator.

The design of the hotel, especially in lobby & breakfast area and spa, is really extraordinary and stylish. The staff was very friendly all the time.

We stayed in a small double room. The room’s design was modern, but not as special as other parts of the hotel. The window faced the neighbours' houses and balconies and had a very limited view to river & street. Room & bathroom were clean, but quite small. The bathroom had no window, so it always took a while after having taken a shower until the humidity was completely removed by the air-conditioning system. Hot water, tea and some cookies are offered for free in the lobby the whole day, but we missed a coffee making facility in the room (water boiling device and instant coffee).

The breakfast is served from 7.30 to 10.30 and is absolutely excellent, with a large variety of muesli, yoghurt, bread, cheeses and much more. We really loved it.

The extraordinary spa is opened until 9 p.m. and offers a pool, sauna and hamam.

The hotel’s outside sitting area including the hot pool has a wonderful Matterhorn view. Unfortunately, all the time we wanted to sit there (in the morning as well as in the afternoon and evening) to relax and take a view to the silence of the mountains, there was pop-music playing (by the hotel) all around in the lobby and in the outside sitting area, so for us this was a thing we found quite disturbing.

Taken together, we can recommend staying here, but be aware that you might hear the music also when sitting on your private balcony if you stay in a room facing the Matterhorn.

The warmth of the welcome at Coeur des Alpes is a pleasure. We were collected from the station and given drinks and chocolates on the patio. After that we went to our room where our suitcases had been placed and a hand written welcome note was waiting. Our room (122) was in the main building – a large double with a small patio looking onto the town and hillside beyond. The room was spacious and modern with large comfortable bed, plenty of storage space including bedside tables, a pleasant seating area and a swivelling TV which could be watched either from the seats or from the bed. The bathroom was very modern and although lovely to look at, not very practical to use. (No proper towel rail and inadequate hooks and shelving). A very good shower though and all beautifully clean and shiny. Our bed had 2 single duvets which, on arrival, were shaped into a heart and dotted with red heart shaped chocolates. A delightful touch, as were celebrating our Ruby wedding anniversary. As we had opted for a cheaper room without the view of the Matterhorn, we spent a lot of time in the other areas of the hotel from where the view was visible. The lounge and terrace are very comfortable, (loved those big fur covered seats), with newspapers, fruit and hot drinks available all day. We enjoyed breakfast – a good selection of breads, cereals, yoghurts etc, with cold meats and cheeses + scrambled eggs and bacon available on request. We also enjoyed the spa, particularly the outside Jacuzzi with Matterhorn view, the Hamman, a delightful experience, and the indoor pool under the glass floor of the lounge. Find the button below the water line and a brilliant Jacuzzi starts at one side of the pool. The steam and sauna rooms are also excellent and there are drinks and fruit available. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful in many different ways. They all seemed to want to make our stay as special as possible for us. And it was. The hotel is in a quiet spot and it is about a ten minute pleasant walk to the much busier village centre. Walk along by the river if you want to avoid the slight hill on the way back.

We loved the Hotel !
We LOVED IT FOR the great location, close by to the departure to the Klein Matterhorn, the nice little walk through the old village to the centre of Zermatt (10mn max), to the centre of Zermatt.
We enjoyed the friendliness of the owners and of the personal, the lovely breakfast, the pool and great outdoor jacuzzi with Matterhorn views, the great design of the architect Heinz Julen.
One only negative point, there is huge windows in the bedroom and very light curtains that let the light coming into the room very early in the morning....but they say they will fixe this problem very soon.
We look forward already to our next holidays there, next april during the great music festival called Zermatt unplugged.

We stayed at Couer des Alpes for 2 nights as part of our honeymoon. And we're so glad we did! This hotel is slightly more expensive than hotels we've stayed in in the past - but for a special occasion, it was absolutely worth the price. We stayed in a small room, but I thought it was plenty big enough for us. We had a nice view of Zermatt and the surrounding mountains - the bed was comfortable and the bathroom was lovely. The view of the Matterhorn from the lobby area (both outdoor and indoor areas) was amazing! I've never actually wanted to hang out in a hotel lobby until this hotel. The free internet was helpful for us and the staff was very friendly and informative. One staff member supplied us with a map and suggested restaurants and hikes that we could go on. The breakfast was fantastic - several choices of bread, cheeses, meats, coffee/tea/juice, spreads, jams, oats, cereal. We sat outside and enjoyed it with a view of the Matterhorn! I would recommend this hotel for anyone staying in Zermatt!

We stayed there for 3 nights, during our hiking trips in Zermatt. Everything about this hotel worked brilliantly.

They picked us up at the station and gave us a great welcome. The decor is just the right combination of stylishness and mountain feel, that makes it classy without being pretentious. The staff were friendly and helpful which enhanced that feeling. After checking in we headed for the outdoor pool overlooking Matterhorn. Our room was spacious and everything of high quality. Great breakfast with everything you need.

We will be staying here again when we are next in Zermatt. Solid 5 stars.

We have just spent 3 nights in a suite in Coeur des Alpes and it was fantastic: the location of this boutique hotel is perfect: at the end of the busy village of Zermatt with unobstructed views of the valley and the snow-capped Matterhorn. The hospitality and service is also fantatic: we were picked up from the train station and given a complimentary glass of prosecco whilst we sat outside on the lounges enjoying the sunshine and mountains before checking in. The buffet breakfast was delicious and downstairs in an extensive well-ness area which includes a Turkish Haman, pool, day beds with complimentary teas fruit etc... I dont think there could be a nicer place to stay in Zermatt
