Just had a weeks sking in Zermatt (5-12 march), it was fab ! Skied over to Italy a few times, it was brilliant. Glorious sunshine every day !
Adonis is a average hotel, decent size rooms, clean bathroom.
Same bland breakfast every morning and if you want a boiled egg, you pay extra ! Never heard of that before.
The manager is miserable and so is the swiss girl on reception.
Its a 8-10 minute walk to the gondola which isn't bad.
All in all it was ok but nothing special.
Go to Zermatt and ski to Italy its great.
As for Zermatt ? £6 for a beer, £10 for a jd and coke and the food is even more expensive, £20 for a pizza, lasagne, etc !
Make sure you have deep pockets and plenty of money, it really is one of the most expensive places I have ever skied.
Its a stunning place and I would go again........but not at the Adonis.
All the best and take it easy on the slopes !!!!

I have just come back from a week's skiing in Zermatt and stayed this time at the Adonis Hotel on a B&B basis (perviously stayed at Hotel Astoria - which was far to noisy). The Adonis is set in a quite road not too far from the main shopping area and is perfect for those who want to enjoy peace & quite but not too far away from everything. The only downside to this hotel was the lack of storage space in the rooms, not only for clothing but there is nowhere to store luggage.
For those of you that like to switch the TV on - you have the luxury of 2 english channels - SKY News and a channel showing old BBC shows - Rubbish. However they do have a DVD player at the back of the TV that was only located on our last night.
I would stay at the Adonis again should I return to Zermatt.

it's been nearly three years since our stay, so I'm a trifle blurry on the specifics. I can tell you that I was more pleased with Hotel Adonis than I was with Zermatt as a whole. Don't get me wrong-- it's certainly a charming and picturesque place, and that I loved about Zermatt-- but I couldn't get past the feeling that I was in DIsneyland and that some of the Cast Members were just a tad wearied of the steady flow of tourists.

But.

Hotel Adonis was away from the noise and the bustle-- which was fine for us, but less fine for people who don't like to walk or who like to be in the center of things. For the two occasions where we required transportation--to and from the train station with luggage-- the hotel provided shuttle service, so all was well. During our stay, all personnel was friendly and patient with our mangled German; and at Hotel Adonis, as with most places we stayed in Switzerland, English is spoken.

There's a worn-about-the -edges quality to the Adonis, which was more comfortable than off-putting. Rooms are pretty much plain-wrap and the décor from another era, but it's clean and comfortable and nothing was crawling around the floors or hiding in the bedding. Ours was a double into which they'd added a third, small, bed for our son. A lacey-curtained sliding door opened to a balcony with brilliant colored flowers growing in boxes and a view of a grassy and serene backyard-- a nice place to sit and do absolutely nothing.

We stayed at the Adonis for three nights before Christmas. Although some distance from the station, the hotel has its own electric taxi. It is well situated for the lift up to Furri, which gives access to the glacier ski area and the Gornergrat, thanks to the new chairlift. Skis and boots can be hired next to the lift station, and left there overnight.

We received a warm welcome, the rooms were very comfortable and a very adequate breakfast was provided. Altogether, very good value for Zermatt.

We stayed at this hotel as we did not get too many available hotels at Zermatt through the websites. The main disadvantage of this hotel is though it was mentioned that it is 10 minutes walk from the station - we found that the distance is not walkable when you have luggage. Taxis are very expensive in Zermatt and we were also ripped by the hotel's own rate. I think this hotel merits to be a 2-star instead of a 3-star - as I found the customer service apalling!

We stayed at this hotel during August 2005 for two nights. Quite a charming hotel. We reserved the room using expedia. We arrived rather late in the evening at Zermatt (around 8.30 pm) so the hotel taxi was not available. We were told that if we had arrived before 7 pm, they would have sent us the hotel taxi. However, other taxis were available at the train station and one of them took us to the hotel.
The receptionist at the front desk was extremely nice. The foyer and the bar and the dining room are quite cosy and comfortable. We were given a room on the second floor (first floor, by European conventions). The window opened up to give us a wonderful view of the mountain. The room itself is quite comfortable. Nice beds and very clean bathrooms. Also, the cabinets beside the bed provided adequate storage options. The front desk staff were really helpful and gave us directions to the mountain etc.
The breakfast was good, though the variety was less compared to the other hotels we stayed at in Paris, and London. But the cozy environment and the friendly staff left a very good impression. The room was also bigger compared to some of the hotels we had stayed at in other European cities.
Loved this hotel and would recommend it to others. Would stay there myself again if I travelled to Zermatt.
