Much of the fun of a trip to the Gornergrat is simply enjoying the ride up to the summit and then enjoying what the clouds allow you to see of the Matterhorn. We were there on a day the clouds did not cooperate greatly but then discovered that the summit was a great place to view significant glaciers below us. Definitely an experience to take and enjoy for what it is willing to give you.

I was visiting Zermatt with my family in August 2016. We were planning to go up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (3.883m), but we freaked out about how expensive it was (almost CHF100 per person). The train to Gornergrat, after 15:36h, will cost you half of it, the view is jaw dropping, you will be able to see Matterhorn in all its grace, and really close.

There is also a small restaurant and a hotel up there, where you can have a snack, a soda or even a wine toast with your loved one to celebrate all the beautiful landscapes. It was Summer when we visited, and the temperature was excellent (we didn't use any coats, and we are from Rio de Janeiro). During Winter, well, I assume that there will be very cold so plan for it. As a tip, always check the weather for the day, even knowing Zermatt is known to have 300 sunny days per year.

Zermatt does not allow cars in the city since 1947. You need to drive to Täsch (5km far from Zermatt), and take the train. It runs 24/7, and every 15 minutes. You can easily park you car at the station.

I prefer this place than Mount Titlis / Mount Jungfrau. The views are just unbeatable.

We took Gornergrat Bahn train from Zermatt. It was amazingly comfortable ride considering the height it covered in the time. It also leaves you with brilliance of swiss engineering to serve us all so well. If you are one of those who can't hike, scared to ride a cable car, you can't have a better option to reach such heights and enjoy stunning views.

If you like activities on mountains(i.e. whizzing down the slopes on skis or snowboards or comfortably gliding through the sledging park on a sledge) this one isn't for you. You should prefer Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, Titlis or Jungfrau instead.

But if you are one of those who loves stunning views all around, you are in for a treat. On one side you have amazing glacier, turn around and Matterhorn smiles at you. Look over the hedge and see a lake. And all these surrounded by countless mountain peaks.

Clear day or cloudy, the mother nature just can't get better.

We didn't do any hiking as we had small kids with us. But I can only imagine making the same journey slowly walking down the mountain.

A Five Star place indeed!!!!

The train ride offers beautiful views all across. You can get down at any of the stations and trek from there on.

As you ride the train from Zermatt up to Gornergrat, you can see the village of Zermatt down below the valley where you have left. The Matterhorn then slowly reveals itself as the train slowly ascends. When you have reached a certain altitude, there will be no more trees blocking your way and you'll see the mountain whole. The mountain can be seen throughout the entire journey of the train. If you're boarding the departing train up to Gornergrat, be sure to take the seats that are to your right because the view is much better on that side with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn.
