It was fine when we arrived in Zermatt so decided to splurge and go up to Gornergrat.
Adults price was 98 Franks each (abt A$300 for 2) which is very expensive if the weather is not good.
I've spoken to some people that got to the top and couldn't see a thing...
If you have hearing problems then you should wear ear plugs because the pressure is quite great and does affect your balance when you get up to over 3000m ! Please be careful and take your time.
Ok, now the good...it was amazing .
Views of the Matterhorn and surrounding mountains are awesome.
Watch your footing as there was heaps of snow, even in May.
Great fun for adults and kids alike.
Check weather conditions and go suitably dressed. It changed from warm to freezing in just an hour while we were there.
Nice cafe with blankets for the seats which overlooked the Matterhorn.
If you've got the money then it's probably a once in s lifetime thing to do.
Note: you can get cheaper tickets which takes you half way up - not sure what facilities they would have open in May at that stop.

Brilliant journey up and totally awesome views. When you get to the top it is total beauty. We had a lovely apple cake and coffee in the cafe at the top which was great. Would recommend getting an early start as it does get busy.

Had a great day in Gornergrat. Nice cogwheel train ride up and great vistas at the top. Our guide was very helpful in understanding what we were viewing.

We took the Gornergrat Railway from Zermatt - just across the road from Zermatt Train Station. It is quite expensive but if you book with the Swiss Travel Centre we received 50% off. The train goes through 4 stations, all of which you can get on and off and explore each area if you like. There were a large group of people travelling together from South Korea and they all stood up on the Matterhorn side on the way up filming the whole way, so no one else could see out. It didn't really matter though as once you reach the top, it's spectacular. The day we went was clear blue skies and the views were incredible. It is up at 10000 feet and you can feel this if you walk up any sort of hill!

When you are getting higher and closer to the top of the mountains, your scenery and views are great.
