“Excellent value for great accommodation!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 February 2014

As hostels go, and we have seen a few, this is top notch. Clean, affordable and meals will please most- dinner 17 CHF( book in the am) and breakfast included. Shared washrooms were spotless - remember to bring towels, bedding supplied. If you have lots of luggage take a taxi or bus from train station otherwise about a 15 min walk. Great location between city and Klein Matterhorn. Long term stay consider paying for the annual membership for future use...all details on their website. Lockers in room and more downstairs of hostel for all equipment.

Room Tip: If you book well in advance there are 4 bed rooms with full ensuite- perfect for families.

Pros:
- extremely friendly staff. Very helpful to make sure you get the most out if your trip
- half price of most other competitor hotels ( or less than that). Zermatt is expensive
- easy dinner offered for CHF16.50 prebooked. Save money compared to dining out

Cons:
- basic
- no wifi in adjacent buildings
- slightly harder to get to. Taxi CHF26 from Zermatt main train station for 3 people. In winter it's hard to walk on the ice /snow with heavy luggages
- bed comfortable but only average, not great

We stayed as a family of 4, for 11 nights in an ensuite room. Plenty of space and storage in the room. Bathroom was very clean, with plenty of hot water . Only downside was the bunk beds. Room was large enough to fit a double bed and a set of bunks. The hostel was well set up for a family ski holiday, with a large, and easily accessed ski and boot room, a children's and games room. We ate most evening meals at the hostel. These were great value by Zermatt standards. The food was generally plentiful and wholesome. The free breakfast, with a coffee machine and a selection of hot chocolate mixes was also a real bonus. Staff were very helpful and friendly and happy to assist with our requests. The hostel was very full on most weekends with local skiers, but had then had few guests on week nights. The shuttle bus to the Klein Matterhorn lift stopped about 30 metres from the Hostel. It was an easy walk ( about 8 minutes) down to town, but probably not recommended if you were carrying ski equipment. The return trip from the Klein Matterhorn, required two shuttles, with services not always well connected and some buses being very full. Found the three ski lift bases at the resort were poorly connected. On mountain access trails were generally very icy below 2,000 metres, with higher lifts being slow to open on cold days. Cervinia, was a real bonus, with drier snow and great restaurants, however there were often long queues to get there.

Room Tip: Recommend booking a private room with an ensuite. Take an electric taxi from the railway station if...

I stayed in a twin room with shared bathroom facilities. Toilets and showers were always clean and rarely had to wait for shower. Bed super comfy with linen provided. All rooms have a sink and lockable cupboards which was great. Food was excellent and staff all very friendly.

Only slight downsides - showers were on a push button which timed out pretty quickly. Also, we were a large group who all commented rooms were really warm at night, even with heating off. As we had no curtains we were using the shutters for privacy, which meant windows open didn't have a huge impact on temperature.

Overall experience was great though!

Room Tip: I'd say worth the money to upgrade to a private en-suite. Some of our group had these and shower...

We have just returned from a holiday to zermatt....we enjoyed our stay here again, clean, warm, plenty of hot water, food is of good quality....one tip we learnt this trip was if you head back from the village just up from the snow boat on the river side there is a bus stop there is a free bus there stops just round the coner from the hostel and save walking up a load of steps.....if your looking for cheap, good quality place to stay then this is for you....email the hostel and there will give you a price on return, great service.

We stayed here for 2 nights in June in a private room with ensuite bathroom, on a half board basis which includes breakfast and dinner.
Even though this is a hostel, by opting to stay in a private room gives us more privacy and the view from the private room which is in the annex building is fabulous !! Room is basic but clean.
The staff at the reception is friendly and helpful and recommended to us an alternative hiking route to Zmutt as our plan to hike up to Sunnega paradise was not possible due to the closure of the funicular car.
The hostel is located on a hilltop and is a rather long walk of 20 mins from the train station.
Overall, we had a pleasant stay here.

Room Tip: Room #33 in the annex building has great view !

Ok, first the good points - the service was friendly and the breakfast was good. The views are nice. But honestly, I wouldn't recommend this place. Firstly, it is a long uphill walk from town. We took a private room with 4 beds. The room is very dreary - small and ill lit, and there wasn't even a cake of soap! And not very cheap, either. Not worth it at all.
